In order, therefore, to form the tipat one and the same operation with the formation ot' the mould, and from one andthe same piece of metal, I eut or stamp the tapering' end of the blank E Iwith three or more teeth f, each having the form of a cone, the bases of which are on a line with 'the base of the tip of the mould, so that when the body ofthe mould is formed by' the mandrel Il, the tip of the mould will consist of conical-shaped projections f, with intervening V- shaped spaces, which project from the case A,'and surround the conical 'point g of the mandrel B.

The swaging-die Gis forced back from the mandrel B, after the completion of the mould, by means of a spring, i, acting upon a central longitudinal rod, j, attached to Athe under side of the swaging-die C, so that it isonly necessary to lift the latch K from the handle of the cam-lever J, when both the lever aml the swaging-die are forced back, as before stated, in a position to be in readiness to form the tip of 'the next mould.
rlhe mould thus formed, it will be seen, is still locked in the groove b of the mandrel by its bent lip a.
lo release it from thc mandrel B, and to straighten it,`so that it may be withdrawn from the mandrel a perfect mould, with the edges just overlapping each other, I secure in openings formed in the side of the forming-case, so as to communicate with the interior opening therein, two or more rods, m, placed so as to strike the mould obliquely to a horizontal line, as shown in fig. 5, having their' inner ends rasped, and their outer ends united by a connecting-platea@ secured by a screw to the case, the shank of saidscrew allowing the plate L to move, with its arms fm, toward and from the mandrel B, while a spring, O, arranged between the case and the plate L, coustantly tends to force the latter outward, so that when the bent lip n. of the mould is desired to be released from its lockingsgroove b, it is only necessary to press the plate L inward, which carries thel rasped ends of the oblique arms "m directly against the side of the mould, so as to press aud bite thereon with suliicient force to prevent the mould from turning,
while, with a quick turn of the mandrel B, the said bent edge is released from its groove b, and made to conform to the curve of the mould, and thus the mould is completed. v
Instead of the means just described of straighten-- ing the bent lip n of the mould, so that it will conform to the, curve of the mould, the mandrel, with the mould thereon, may be drawn half way ont of the cylinder, so that the bent lip n may be liberated from its holding-groove on said mandrel, the mould turned partly around, and pressed back to its original place in the forming-cavity, with its edges slightly overlapped. IDue revolution given to the mandrel, andthe required cylindricalforln is imparted to the mould.
The blank E from which the mould is made, is first cut or stamped from a sheet of metal, of the required size and shape, as represented in fig. 7.
It is then placed within the opening a ofthe receiving-case A, and fitted securely in the` groove b of the mandrel B, soas to stand ina vertical position,
as shown in tig. 1, one side ofthe opening a in the case being bevelled, to facilitate its entrance therein.
The attemlant then grasps the crank D of the man;t drel, and turns it, which bends the lip a of the blank into the groove b,-so as to lock it with the cylinder; then continuing to turn the mandrel one revolution, it will 'draw the blank through the opening and around said mandrel. l The swaging-die C is then brought into action by means of the cam-lever J, to form the conical tip of the mould, closing up the conical teeth f of the blank, and another revolution is given to the mandrel, to render the joints o f the tip even. f
Ihp rasped ends of the oblique rods on. are then pressed sharply against the mould on. the mandrel,
with sufficient force to prevent it from turning while;
the mandrel is turned quickly by its crank D, so as to liberate the locking-lip nfof the mould from its groove l), thus bringing it into the proper form.
lhe swaging-cam J is released, the locking-arm Fis thrown back, the'mandrel -B withdrawn frolu the forming-case A, the mould removed, the mandrel replaced and locked within the forming-case, and the machine is in readiness for the formation of another mould. v
In this manner moulds may be made with great facility, requiring only to have the joints of the body and the tip soldered in the usual manner.
Dipper-handles, and other similar articles, may also be made with great facility, and at a great saving of expense, by this machine.
Having thus described my invention,
I claiml l. Candle-moulds, with their tips, formed from the same blank, at one operation, by machinery constructed substantially as described.
2. Ihe combination of a mandrel, B, provided with a longitudinal groove, b, the enclosing forming-case A, having a feeding-opening, c, and swaging-die C, having a sockct,.I, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
3. The combination of the pivoted dog G with a mandrel, constructed with a notch or groove, b, for arresting the motion of the mandrel inthe proper position to be locked with the blank, substantially as described. f
4. Ihe sliding biting arms on, for holding the. mould within the case, for the purpose of allowing the mandrel to be turned independent-lyof the mould,
to unlock the latter therefrom, substantially as described. l
5. The combination of the pi'voted arm F, for locking the mandrel within the case A, with the toothed dog G and swaging-die O, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
6. The combination, in a machine for forming candle-moulds from asingle blank, at one and 'the same operation, of a receiving-oase, A, a' formingmiandrel, B,`a sWaging-tip die, C, sliding bitingr arms m, piv-` eted ,locking-arm Rand arresting-dog G, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as der scribed.
