In windows, doors or the like of the kind referred to ithas already been proposed to provide one free corner of each sash with a pivot pin working in a hole in a double grooved slide, and the other free corner with a slide adapted to engage and slide along a fixed guide and connected to the sashby a vertical hinge pin so as to permit the free ends of the sashes to be moved toward and away from each other.
The fixed guide has been s'uit-ably attached to or has formed part of the window frame,
and behind the guide a bar hasbcen eccentrically or otherwise pivoted in end brackets and adapted when rotated, or partly rotated, to engage and hold the two hinged slides of the sashes from movement. The rotation of the bar has been efiected by one or more handles connected to the bar and the weight of the sashes has been taken by balls orwheelsarranged to run on a suitable bearing surface.
An object of the present invention is to enable the frame to be fix'ed in position and the sashes or the like'to be attached later to the frame without in any way disturbing the frame at the time of attaching'the sashes, thereby rendering the outlay on the attaching and locking mechanism thereof unnecessary until. such time as the sashes are actually required to be attached to the frame, or on the other hand avoiding the necessity of cutting the frame, after. this has been fixed'in the building, when it is subsequently desired to fit the attaching and locking mechanism. To this end brackets carrying the locking bar are provided and so arranged that they can be merely fitted against the rabbets of the frame. One of these end brackets is formed with a keyehole slot, and a lug or projection is cast or provided on the bar in such a position, that to insert the I pivot ends of the bar, which are of lesser conjunction with the shoulder at the other end will prevent any lateral movement of the bar. Another object of this invention is to obviate the use, for securing the two sashes in the closed position in a single plane, of a bolt or cocks'pur or other fastening separately operated from the lockin mechanism by which the'window is secure y held in any one of its range of positions, and this object is attained by providing a latch'or other catch on the sashes, adapted whenthe window is closed, to be operated irectly or indirectly from the locking bar, when this is rotated to engage a part of the frame or the fitting, and so lock the sashes intermediate of the free ends thereof.
In orderto secure the'handle of the lockingmechanism in the'lockingposition, and to prevent possibility of water and wind blowing through the working slot for the the bar is directly connected thereto, the le ver is passed through the check bead, a pivoted cover plate for the slot is provided hav rotated to engage the handle when in the locking position.

The top bar of the frameQis, during the course of construction of the frame, provided with a'groove extendin as shown in Fig 9 beyond the inner faces of the side bars, and adapted to receive a channel guide 3 the length of which is approximately equal to the width between the side bars of the frame. The channel guide 3 is preferably formed shown with inturned side lips. Running in the channel guide 3 are slides 4 which are grooved to receive the lips on the channel guide and provided with holes for the pivot pins 5. The top pivot pin 5 is arranged on a plate 6 which is screwed to the top of the sash.
. The pivot ends 7 of the locking bars 8 are carried by right-angled bracket plates 9 which are screwed to the check bead and frame.
In order to facilitate the insertion and removal of the bar 8 and to prevent side-play when inserted, one of the end brackets 9, see F ig. 5, is formed with a keyhole slot 10, and the corresponding trunnion T as shown to the right hand of Fig. 3 is extended, and the extension provided with a corresponding lug or feather 11 which is so located that. the bar 8 must be turned beyond its normal arc of oscillation to permit of the lug entering thell'hen this done the 1 distance slot in the bracket 9. bar can be moved a sutlicient through the said keyhole-slotted en d bracket to permit the opposite pivot end to be brought exactly opposite the hole in the end bracket corresponding thereto. The bar is then drawn back to enter the last men tioned pivot end into the bracketand allowed to drop square, when the lug will then be at an angle to the slot and in conjunction with the shoulder, at the other end will prevent any lateral movement of. the bar.
To obviate the use, for securing the two sashes in the closed position in a single plane, of a bolt or cockspur or other fastening separately operated from the locking mechanism by which the window is securely held in any one of its range of positions, a
latch or other catch 12 is provided on the sashes, adapted, when the window 1s closed,
to be operated directly, shown, or it may 5 be indirectiy, from the locking bar 8, when this is rotated, to engage a part of the frame or the fitting, or as shown the plate 13, and so look the sashes intermediate of. the, free ends thereof.
In order to prevent possibility of water and wind blowing through the working slot, 14, for thehandle 15 working the locking mechanism, when the operating handle or lever of the bar is directly connected thereto, the slot is provided with a pivoted cover plate 16. The plate 16, is provided with a notch 1'7, so that when the plate is moved over the slot, into the position shown in dotted line, the handle 15 will be held in the locking position.
When the window sashes are opened to the full extent the adjacent ends of the slides 4: will, or may, come violently into contact, and to avoid straining the hinge joints of the sashes under these circumstances, a corresponding stop is provided at the bottom of the sashes by arranging a tail piece 18, see Fig. 2, on each hinge plate 19 of suflicient length. to make contact simultaneously ''ith the slides i.
With the arrangements described the guiding and locking mechanism. can be easily fittedto' the frame at any time after the frame has been fixed in the building, with-- out in any way interfering with or cutting the frame. It is obvious that the attaching and locking mechanism may, if desired, be arranged at the top of the window.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire tosecure by-Letters Patent of the United States of America is 1. In a window the combination of a frame, a plurality of sashes, each sash having one stile hinged to the adjacent stile of the next succeeding sash and the opposite stileprovided with a pivot atone end running in a corresponding groove in said frame, a second groove in a face of said frame at right angles with the face of said pivot groove, a. member hinged to said opposite stile adapt ed to travel in said second groove, means for holding all of said members in any desirec positions within the limits of their movements, and a catch provided on the sashes, adapted when these are in the closed position in a single plane, to be actuated by said holding means to engage a part of the frame.
2. in a window, the combination of a frame, a plurality of sashes, each sash having onestile hinged to the adjacent stile of the nest succeeding sash and the stile opposite to the first-named stile being p vided with a pivot at one end running in a corresponding groove in said frame, a member hinged to said opposite stile of each sash, a guide common to all of said members, a recess cut in a face of the frame parallel to the face of the window and means located in said recess for securing all of said BEST AVAIMiBLE COPY limits of their movements, and a catch provided on the sashes, adapted when these are in the closed position in a single plane to be actuated by said holding means to engage said guide.
