UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MQSES .ARIEL STERN, OF SAVANNAI-I, GEORGIA.
SUPPLEMENTARY TYPE-CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses ARIEL STERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supplementary Type-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to type cases and more particularly to Supplemental type cases Which may be cletachably secured to the main type case thus adapting the same for use with certain type which may be used more often in certain work than in other work.
It also has in view the provision of means whereby the Supplemental type case may be securely fastened to the main case thus preventing the said Supplemental case from being accidentally removed from the said main case.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description, claims, and the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective of the supplemental type case; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same secured to the main case, parts thereof being in section; Figs. 3 and 4 are bottom plan views disclosing the present invention in various positions; Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modification thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a Supplemental type case provided with a plurality of compartments Within which are put leaders for leader type,,7 or such other printing type as is infrequently used. Should the said type be desired for frequent use, the case 10 may quickly and easily be fastened to the main case in reach of the typesetters. Secured to the upper edges of the rear side of the case 10 are a plurality of hooks 11, adapted to engage the Outer rim of the main case as shown in Fig. 2. Secured to the bottom or under side of the case 10 and adjacent to the main case is a locking member 12, So located as to engage the under side of the main case. This locking member 12, as shown in Fig. 3 comprises the combination with a plate of a plurality of pins or studs 13 operating in the slots 14 formed in the opposite terminals of the plate, said studs retaining the locking member to the case. Intermediate the slots 14 may be secured any means,

such as a knob 15 for operating the plate in and out of engagement with the main case.
Instead of having the member 12 Slidably mounted to the Supplemental case, it'
may be pivotally mounted thereto and serve the same purpose. The locking member in the latter case is pivoted to a Supplemental case at 18, and is provided with a slot 16 in one side to engage a Stop pin 17 for retaining said locking member in its operative po- Sition.
In the modification, the looking member is provideo` with a plurality of slots 16' and 16, the same being located in the opposite edges of Said member, either to engage the stop 17' for the purpose of retaining the locking member in operative position, no matter which Side of the stop said member may be on.
What is claimed as new is 1. The combination of a main type case, a Supplemental type case so arranged that a side thereof abuts With a side of the main case, hooks projected from the said Side of the Supplemental case to engage over the abutting side of the main case, the main and Supplemental cases having the under sides thereof substantially flush, and a movable locking member mounted on the under side of the Supplemental case and movable so as to project beneath and into engagement with the under side of the main case to prevent upward movement of the Supplemental case and disengagement of its hooks from the main case.
2. The combination with a main type case, a Supplemental type case therefor, adjacent sides of said cases abutting, hooks carried by the said Side of the Supplemental type case and engaging over the abutting side of the main case, a locking member movably mounted on the under side of the flexible type case and projecting beneath the main case to prevent upward displacement of the Supplemental case, and a member carried by the under side of the latter case detachably engaged by the said locking member to limit the movement of the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES ARIEL STERN.
