Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
Application filed May 13, 1910. Serial No. 561,147.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILBUR W. ll oLARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ditching tools, and the object is to provide means whereby the tool can be used for forming the bed or surface of a ditch for the laying of tile. It is customary, or generally so, to lay tile of different sizes, and in so doing, it requires a special tool for each size of tile. By my invention, I am enabled to adapt my implement for all sizes of tool, and thereby do away with the necessity of having several tools on hand where one can fulfil the requirements.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a View in perspective; Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view throughthe head; Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of one side of the head; and Fig. 4: is a view in elevation of one of the arms.
A represents the blade, which is preferably made semi-cylindrical, or arch-shaped,
to produce a convex surface, and the longitudinal edges are rounded, as at 1, to receive the rods 2. Notches or recesses 3 are formed in the sides of the blade for the reception of the arms 4. The arms 4: are provided with openings through which the rods 2 are adapted to pass for connecting the arms to the blade. The arms 4 project inwardly and are curved at their upper ends, the curved ends being received in sockets 5 in the head B, which sockets are formed in the sides of the head. The head B is provided with a slot 6, in which the handle 7 is received, and which is adjustably held therein by a bolt 8, which passes through the head and through an opening formed in the end of the handle. Recesses 9 are formed in the head, which communicate with the sockets 5, and received in the recesses and sockets 5 are washers 10, which bear against the upper ends of the arms 4, and the bolt 8 which passes through the head, passes through the washers and causes the washers to be drawn against the arms for locking them in the sockets in the head, as the nut 11 is screwed upon the bolt. The blade is caused to be drawn or forced into the bed for forming the proper surface for laying the tile in the ditch, and as it is customary to use different sizes of tile, different adjustments of the blade are necessary. By releasing the bolt 8, the arms 4: can be moved or adjusted for obtaining the proper convex surface of the blade for the tile to be laid.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided means whereby the blade can be adjusted to widths for different requirements, by simply moving the arms through the sockets in the head and fastening them in the position required for obtaining the new adjustment.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A. ditching tool, comprising a blade and handle, and means connecting the blade to the handle whereby the blade can be adjusted to present difierent convex surfaces.
2. A ditching tool, comprising a blade and handle, and means for adjusting the blade whereby different convex surfaces can be presented.
8. A ditching tool, comprising a blade and handle, arms connected to the blade, and means for adjustably connecting the arms to the handle whereby the blade can be adjusted to present different convex surfaces.
l. A ditching tool, comprising a blade having a convex surface, a handle, means for connecting the handle to the blade whereby the blade can be adjusted to present different convex surfaces.
5. A ditching tool, comprising a blade having a convex surface, a handle, arms connected to the blade, and means adjustably connecting the arms to the handle whereby the blade can be adjusted to present different convex surfaces.
6. In a ditching tool, the combination with a blade, of a head, a handle mounted on the head, arms connected to the blade, means adjustably connecting the arms to the head whereby the blade can be adjusted to present different convex surfaces.
7. In rat ditching tool, the combination In testimony whereof I affix my signa- With a head having sockets formed in, the V ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
