To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER J. DUNKLIN and GREEN R. MARLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Butler and State of Alabama, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to means for facilitating the connecting of a spindle to the stock of an axle, and has for its object the provision of means for greatly strengthening the joint between the spindle and the stock.
From practical experience,.the assembling of a detachable spindle with a stock of an axle has been found very convenient for the reason that the spindle often becomes worn or broken, which will necessitate the placing of an entire new axle upon the vehicle, whereas with a detachable spindle structure, such as shown in the accompanying drawing, the worn spindle can be easily detached from the stock and a new one substituted therefor.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of the axle showing the same in an assembled position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the end of the axle. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper clamp for the axle. Fig. 5 is a per spective view of the lower clamp for connecting the spindle to the stock.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the stock which is provided near each end upon its upper surface with a transversely extending dovetail groove '2 and upon its lower surface with a dovetail notch 3. The stock 1 is provided at its outer end with a threaded extension 1 which fits in a threaded recess 5 formed in the inner end of the spindle 6, and the spindle 6, like the stock 1, is provided upon its upper surface with a transversely extending dovetail groove 7 and upon its lower surface with a transversely extending notch 8. dle 6 is provided with the usual hub-engaging portion 9 and an annular flange 10 for limiting the inward movement of the wheel upon the hub-engaging portion 9.
The top clamp member 11 is provided at each end with a depending dovetail portion 12 which portions are adapted to fit in the dovetail grooves 2 and 7 formed upon the upper surface of the stock and spindle respectively. A notch 13 is formed upon the under surface of the bolster 14: near each end thereof, in which the upper clamps 11 rest or fit as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The under clamp 15 comprises a shank portion 16 and laterally extending or protruding ends 17. The shank portion 16 is provided upon its upper surface with a transversely extending dovetail groove 18, thereby forming a plurality of lip portions 19 which lip portions are beveled upon their under surface 20 so as to fit snugly in or engage the notch portions 3 and 8 of the stock and spindle. The shank portion 16 is preferably the same width as the stock 1 or spindle 6, and the laterally extending ends 17 extend upon either side of the axle. Yoke members 21 straddle the bolster 1 1 and the lower screw-threaded ends 22 of the yoke members 21 extend through the apertures 23 of the bottom clamp 15 and have nuts 24 threaded thereon for firmly clamping the stock 1 and spindle 6 in engagement with the bolster 1 1.
From the above description, it is obvious that the spindle 6 can be easily detached from the stock 1 when it is desired to remove the'same.
What we claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination, with a stock, a detachable spindle, a bolster, said stock provided with a dovetail groove formed upon the upper surface thereof, said spindle provided with a dovetail groove formed upon the upper surface thereof, an upper clamp provided with dovetail depending ends fitting in said grooves, said stock provided with an inclined notch formed upon its under surface, said spindle provided with an inclined notch formed upon its under surface, a bottom clamp comprising a shank portion, a plurality of lip portions formed thereon, said lip-portions being beveled upon their under surface,, said, lip; portions engaging said lei-estimpnx whereof We, hereul to affix notche siormed 111 theg u nd'en surface of said" OWKSIgRatHAGS ln-apyesenee, of two -w1tnesses.
