To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARL S S. MOORE, V. S., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Danvers, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Milking Vessel; and I do declare the following to be such a full, clear, and exact description of my invention as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification in explaining its nature.

My invention relates to a vessel designed for dairy use, and particularly for receiving milk and has for its objects, 1st. To prevent contamination of its contents by any foreign matter from the body of the cow, the atmosphere or any pollution by touch of person while milking. 2nd. To provide a means for the renewingof the strainer surface, causing the strainer fabric to flow or glide lengthwise at each emptying of the receptacle or whenever otherwise desirable. 3rd. To provide a simple and water tight locking joint between the vessel and the cover without the use of packing. And to secure other advantages and results some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the various parts. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

A shows the spout through which the contents of the vessel is emptied.
B shows the outline of an opening in the cover through which the screening fabric is exposed. Said screening fabric G is stretched across the opening in the cover, and connects the two holding rollers C and D, E shows the operating knobs on the ends of the rollers C and D, F shows a rod upon which the straining fabric rests. It will be seen that when the roller D is turned the screening fabric G is wound thereon and at the same time unwound from the roller 0, and as the operation is continued the entire screening surface exposed at the opening B is changed. The screening fabric may be of cloth or other suitable material and may be easily removed and sterilized after each using.
Circumferentially carried by the cover, at diametrically opposite points, are two depending fianges I, terminating in horizontally-disposed fingers I. The flanges and fingers on opposite sides of the pail are reversely disposed, z. 0., with the fingers I pointing in opposite directions.
Carried at diametrically opposite points on the bucket are plates H riveted to the bucket and having, each, a neck It offset from the bucket-body and carrying near its top a rivet or pin L uniting said neck with the bucket-body. The fingers I are projected under the pin L and between the neck It and the bucket-body, with a wedging action, the upper edges of said fingers being, for this purpose, preferably slightly inclined and riding against said pin L, whereby the cover is locked in position.
K, shows a cap which fits over and closes the spout A, 0 shows the bail and P shows the handle portion of said bail, B shows a projection under which it is intended to insert the fingers when the operator desires to raise the upper portion of the cover as shown in Fig. 4.. It will be noted that when the top portion of the cover is in position the strainer fabric rests upon the supporting rod F, and forms a pocket at S, into which all foreign matters in the milk or other liquid will collect, and may then be wound on the roller D, thereby exposing a clean straining surface at S.
In Fig. 8, the working of the cover locking device is shown in detail. The position of the straining fabric is also shown as it fits down under the top portion of the cover to form the pocket at S.
In Fig. 4, the top portion of the cover N is raised to allow freedom in arranging the strainer fabric G on the rollers C and D, M shows a snap catch which fits over the bearing on the roller C and holds the upper portion of the cover in position when it is down as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. T shows tension springs which press against the rollers G and D and hold them in position so that the strainer fabric may not sag in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a milking-pail carrying, at diametrically opposite points, two plates, each provided with a neck offset from the pail-body, said neck carrying near its top a rivet uniting said neck with the pail-body; a cover carrying, circumferentially, at diametrically opposite points, two depending flanges terminating in horizontally disposed fingers projected under said rivet and between said neck and the pail-body.
2. In a milking-pail carrying, at diametrically opposite points, two plates, each provided with a neck offset from the pail-body, said neck carrying near its top a rivet uniting said neck with the pail-body; a cover carrying, circumferentially, at diametrically opposite points, two depending flanges terminating in horizontallydisposed, oppositely-pointing fingers projected under said the pai1- having an opening bridged by a horizontally-movable, screen, forming a strainer, said cover carrying, circumferentially, at diametrically opposite points, two depending flanges terminating in horizontally-disposed, oppositely-pointing fingers, having their upper edges inclined, said fingers beingprojected under said rivet and between said neck and the pail-body, with a wedging action.
