LANXTON ARAY, 013 DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BOOKMARK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LANXTON ARAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to book marks and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will not only mark the page, but which will hold the book in open position if desired and will mark the line, the particular word, or the punctuation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a book mark having means to mark the page and further means carried by said paper marking means for holding the book in open position and which may be turned to permit the closing of the book.
Further objects of the invention will appear the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device removed from the book. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device applied to the book.
Referring more especially to the drawing 1 represents a rod which is provided upon its ends with hooks 2 adapted to be engaged by an elastic band 3 having loops 4: at its ends for this purpose.
Arranged in parallel relation to the rod 1 is a marker supporting member 5 which is bent at right angles as shown at 6 to surround the rod 1 and to provide pivotal loops by which the supporting member may be turned upon the rod 1.
Slidably connected with the supporting member 5 is a slotted arm 7 which is adapted to move up or down over the rod in order to mark the line and sliding upon the arm 7 is a pointer 8 which is used to indicate the word or the punctuation. For purpose of convenience it may be here stated that the arm 7 moves vertically of the book while the pointer 8 moves laterally or horizontally. i
Pivotally mounted upon the rod 1 adjacent its longitudinal center is a spring bar 9 Specification of Letters Patent.

which is adapted to extend on either side of the center of the book and to engage the leaves thereof so as to hold the book in open position.
The arm 7 is adapted to be moved to either side of the book so that lines on either of the opposite pages can be marked.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is
l. A book marker comprising a supporting rod, means to connect the ends of the rod together and removable therefrom, said means holding the rod in position in the book, line marking means slidably mounted on and adapted to swing upon said rod, and apointer slidably mounted on said line marking means to mark a point in the line.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a rod, elastic means for holding the same in a book, a swinging supporting member carried by said rod and parallel therewith, and a marker longitudinally movable upon the supporting member.
3. A device of the class described comprising a rod, elastic means for securing the same between the leaves of a book, a sup porting member arranged parallel to the rod and connected therewith at its ends for swinging movement on the rod, a laterally extending arm longitudinally slidable upon the supporting member, and a pointer laterally slidable upon the arm;
4. A device of the class described comprising a rod, means to connect the ends of the rod together and removable therefrom to secure the same between the pages of a book, and a resilient bar pivoted adjacent its middle portion on the rod, said bar adapted to lie parallel with the rod or transversely thereto with its ends extending in opposite directions from the rod to engage the opposite leaves.
5. A device of the class described comprising a rod, means to connect the ends of the rod together and removable therefrom for holding the same in a book, a supporting member carried by and adapted to swing on said rod, a movable marker longitudinally slidable on the supporting member, and a laterally movable marker carried by the longitudinally slidable marker.
6. A device of the class described, comprising a rod having hooked ends, a resilient band having looped ends to removably engage said hooks, a supporting member mounted to swing upon the rod and having its major port-ion extending parallel therewith, a line marking arm slidably mounted upon said supporting member, a pointer carried by the arm and adapted to slide thereover, and resilient means carried by the rod for holding the book in open position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
