nx'innsioii cocon on, sin).
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM M. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States ot America, and a resident of the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of 1Washington, have invented certain new and uset'ul lmprovernents in Extension Couches or Beds,
of which the 'following is a specification.'
l'lhepresent invention pertains to fasten# ing contrivances for couch extensions, and
the primary aim thereof is an improved prevision in couches of the davenport or dro side type for securing the extensions in a justed positions.
The invention resides in certain novel teatures in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements or parts as set forth in the fol-- dened in the ap- In the accompanying drawin wherein similar numerals of reference designate cor- '5 responding parts throughout:
Figure l isaperspective of one end portion ef a couch of thedavenport type embodying the features of my invention in suoli form as n'ow referred by me, one ot 'the exten sions being shown in lowered position and the other raised lto provide a back. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end elevation showing one of the extensions in horizontal position, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan in broken section showing the corner portion of the couch disclosed in Fig. 2.
The 'couch comprises end vframes as 'l ot angle bars, and side extensioni'rames as 2, 2 composed of similar bars and pivotally connected with the cud trames in the usual manner. For fastening the extensioiftrames 2 I provide at both ends of each traine catch contrivances including a stay and a brace as 3 and 4 which are arranged respectively at the outer and inner Jfaces of the vertical end tlange of the frame and pivot-ally enaged with a bolt 5 seated in said Bange. The stays 3 are provided with angular cxtensions or catches 3', conveniently' in the form of collar rivets, which fit freely in respective guide slots l() provided in the vcrtical flanges of thc top trames, while the braces l aie provided with curved extensions 4 in respective guide slots, 1l provided in the side angcs of the standards or legs ot said frames.
The braces for each extension frame are bars of the end and slidably engaged Specification of Letters Patent. @attained NQV, 35s gt Application lc February 24, 1910. 'Serial No. 545,748. I.
provided withinwardly facing shoulders 5 and 4:' which are adapted to engage the lower braces horizontal and lowered positions respectively,
the guide slots l1 of the said frame is adjusted to walls oit when the 60 Each brace is furthermore provided with an angular shoulder 5 in common with the lower edge of its curved portion 4 and which shoulder is adapted to ride over the lower wall ot the guide slot of the brace when the extension is moved upwardly from the horizontal position.
ment
By this arrangethe braces can be directed for clear passage ot'their shoulders 5 'through the slots ll by moving quickly first upwardly the extension trame 7o from and then downwardly past the horizontal.
inclined notches l0 y their lower walls to receive slots 10 communicate with outwardly which are provided in the catches 3 75 when the extension frames are raised to serve as backs, and are provided with convex bearing surfaces 10 for the catches in common with the inner wall portions of respective slots 10. By this arrangement the stays of either extension frame can be directed for retraction of their catches 3 clear of the notches thereof-by moving first inwardly and then lVhen extension frames the trame quickly outwardly.
2, are adjusted to their lowered position, catches 3 of stays are held out of engagement tion, cure with'the notches clearly shown in F ig. 2.
HavingI thus fully described my invenwhat lt claim as new and by Letters Patent of the United States desire to se- 9o et America, is z 1. In an extension traine vided pivote couch or bed, an end including angularly disposed nicmwith a shoulder, an extension frame d to said end frame, and a catch conjtrivance comprising members pivoted to said extension frame and each provided i engaging part, said members being each slid ably e with an ngaged in a respective guide slot of said end frame and one thereof being connected with said extension nient therewith ment.
brace frame for move acrossv its center 'of move Q. ln anv extensioncouch or bed, anend frame, a catch contrivance an extension frame pivoted thereto, comprising a stay and a pivoted on one of said frames, said ril ' operation when said I horlzontal and lowered positions. 3. In anextenslon couch or bed, an end J I i. the center of movement of sind extension frame, and releaeable connecting' means between said stay and brace and the other ofsznd frames, engaging thefstay .fer operation vvhen said extension frame 1s in elevated position and-engaging said brace .for extenslon frame is in frame including angularly disposed upper and lower frame members formed with guide slots, Ian extension frame pivoted to said end frame, a stay pivotedto seid extension freine and provided on its free end p0rtion with an engaging part'and slidably engaged in the slot of the u said end frame, seidv with a catch shoul per member of ide s ot being formed er arranged to be engaged by said engaging part of said stay provided with aving spaced enrv of Said end frame, said j parts for'engagement with the catch shoul er of -said last named'guide slot for .holding said extension frame in horizontal and lowered positions, the same when in the holding the enga ing. of engagement wit its;
