Be it known that I, HARRY H. SCHROYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-vestibule Diaphragms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved type of vestibule diaphragm extremely sim ple in construction and operation involving the use of few parts and cheap to manufacture and install.
, It is an object therefore of this invention to construct an improved type of diaphragm wherein a pair of rigid frame bars are utilized, one connected to the face plate of the diaphragm and the other to the end of the car, said bars connected to one another by suitable heavy flexible fabric or composition material to permit. relative movement therebetween and yet insuring the interior of the diaphragm remaining weatherproof.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a vestibule diaphragm wherein. continuous metallic members are provided extending around the top and sides of the diaphragm and suitably connected together by a single flexible connection.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a vestibule dia phragm embodying the use of continuous bars forming the top and side members of the diaphragm suitably connected together by a strip of heavy ply fabric or the like to permit movement of said respective bars into or away from one another according to the conditions imposed upon the diaphragm.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a vestibule diaphragm simple in construction and operation and well adapted for the purposes designed.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described,

As shown in the drawings, the reference numeral 1, indicates the end of a car, and 2, the extensible vestibule platform thereof, and the reference numeral 3, denotes as a whole the face plate of the diaphragm, which is adapted to abut against a similar face plate of another vestibule diaphragm on another car. Rigidly secured in any suitable manner by bolts or otherwise upon the end of the car is an outwardly directed continuous channel frame member 4:, forming a part of the legs or sides and top of the vestibule diaphragm, and secured upon the inner surface of the face plate 3, is a continuous Z- bar 5, which likewise extends upwardly to form the legs or sides of the diaphragm and across the top to form a part thereof.
Secured in any suitable manner by means of rivets, bolts or otherwise on the inner surface of one of the flanges of the Z-bar is one margin of a flexible heavy fabric or other material strip 6, the other margin of which is secured upon the outer surface of one of the flanges of the channel member 4, said strip extending upwardly along the sides and across the top of the diaphragm and consisting substantially of three parts. two of which form the legs and the other the top of the diaphragm, said leg sections be ing joined to the top portion by means of sector shaped shoulder pieces 7, stitched thereto. As will be readilv seen from the construction shown, the width and height of the Z-bar frame member 5, is greater than that of the channel frame member 4, thus permitting the channel member l, to telescope within the Z-bar member 5, when the diaphragm is contracted. Of course due to the heavy fabric.- fle'xible' connection 6, the? diaphragm may bewarped into practically any position such as required when in use by" the cars traveling onuneven' track or in rounding curves,
In the modified form of device illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a continuous plate or bar 8, having one margin turned subst'antially'at' a right angle for attachment to the end of the car 1, and another similar continuous plate or bar 9, connected to the face plate 3, of the diaphragm with a strip of flexible fabric 10, substantially of U-shape connected at its margins thereto.
In the modified form of device illustrated in'Figs. 7 and 8, I- have shown a; construction wherein continuous bars are used secured on the car end and face plate respectively, the one denoted by the reference numeral 11, substantially of channel section and having an inturned margin on which the margin of a flexible strip 12, is-attached, and the other bar 13, substantially of'S- shape section and provided with aninturned margin to which the other margin of the strip 12, is attached.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a Wide range without departing from the'principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1; A vestibule diaphragm comprising a channel-bar frame member adapted for attachment on the end' of a car, aZ-bar frame member of greater widthand height than said channel member adapted for attachment on the'face plate of the diaphragm; permitting the channel bar to telescope therewithin, and a flexible connect-ion'between said channel bar andisaid Z-barframe members;
2.: In a vestibule diaphragm. the combination. with the face plateandiendfof the. car '45 ofmetallic' frame members, secured to each adapted to telescope within one another and a. flexible connection of. U-shap'ehaving; its ends rigidlysecured tothe frame members. 3. In a vestibule diaphragm in combination with the car and face plate, of a con tinuous frame member of channel section secured upon the car and a continuous. frame member ofthe Z-section secured upon said face plate, said members extending upwardly to form the sides and top of the diaphragm and adapted to telescope one within the other, and. a Weatherproof flexible connection secured tosaid.v respective. frame: memebers to permit relative movement thereof. and effect asealing connection therebetween.

In a deviceof the-class desoribed.interfitting metallic frame members formingthe legs and top sector shaped metallic shoulder pieces connecting the same and. a flexible member bent in substantially U shape and having opposite ends rigidly attached to. the. metallic frame members and shoulderpieces; 5-. A- vestibule diaphragm of theclass -described comprising frame members. forming. thelegs and topv of adiaphragm, flanges formed on the adjacent ends of each thereof-,- and a continuous flexible connection along the legs and top of the. diaphragm between said membersattached to the flanges thereof. 61 In a vestibule diaphragm of the class describecha pair of flanged frame members 7 of different widtlr' and height adapting one tomove within the. other, anda flexible sealing connection betweensaid members having both ends rigidly secured tothe members.
