FREDERICK GARDNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THERESA GARDNER, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED PACKAGE AND TOY.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Packages and Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved package or receptacle, which is preferably made substantially air and moisture proof and which is provided with certain attachments or devices whereby the same may be used as a toy or amusement novelty after the package has been emptied. Its objects are to provide a hermetically sealed, germ, dust and moisture proof package of simple construction, which may be used for vending various articles, such as pop-corn, nuts, or the like, and which will furnish a novel humming device after the contents of the package have been removed. I accomplish these objects by means of the device shown in the accompanying drawing which shows a longitudinal sectional view of my improved device.
As shown in this drawing, 1 represents the body of the package, which ismade of any suitable material, preferably paper, and which is indicated as being cylindrical in shape. This body portion is provided with a lining 2 of suitable material for rendering the package moisture-proof and air-tight, such, for instance, as parafiin. One end of the receptacle is provided with a cover 3 preferably made of the same material as the body and also lined with the moisture and air proof lining in order to form a tight closure. At the other end is a similar cover 4, which is made in a similar manner. After the material has been placed in the receptacle and the covers engaged with the ends of the body portion,a label or wrapper 5 is Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 22, 1908.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Serial No. 449,804.
pasted or secured around the body portion and extends up over the inwardly projecting flanges of the covers 3 and 4, in order to hold said covers in position and in order to further protect the contents by making the receptacle practically air-tight. A string or cord 6 extends through a small hole 7 in the cover 3 and is secured on the inside of the cover, preferably by being passed through a holder or disk 7 and knotted so that it cannot be readily withdrawn from the cover. This holder 8 is preferably covered by a disk or strip of paper 9 which is secured to the inside of the cover and which will prevent air from entering through the opening 7. At the opposite end of the string 6 is a loop 10 which is adapted to engage with the neck 11 of a handle 12.
hen the contents of the package have been removed, which is done by removing the cover 4, leaving the cover 3 in position, the device forms a resonant humming toy which is used by engaging the loop 10 with the end of the handle 12, this handle being provided, at the engaging place, with rosin, so that when the receptacle is swung around at the end of the string 6, a loud humming noise will be produced.
Having thus described my invention, which I do not wish to limit to the exact arrangement or details of construction herein set forth, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a receptacle having a removable cover, a string, having a loop, attached to the opposite end of the receptacle, and a handle having a resined portion for engagement with the loop in the string.
FREDERICK GARDNER.
