SKIRT MARKER. APPLICATION rILnn APR.16.1908.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN A. RITTMAN, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
SKIRT-MARKER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN A. Rrr'r- MAN, citizen of the United States, resident of Sandusky, county of Erie, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in Skirt-Markers, of which the ollowing is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated ap lying that principle, so as to distinguish it rom other inventions.
The present invention relates to a device for the use of garment makers and fitters, and particularly for dressmakers in marking the height of skirts.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character thatwill be extremely simple in its construction and operation, rendering it not only inexpensive but susceptible of use by the party being fitted, if desired.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constitutin however, but one of various mechanical orms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 represents two modes of using such device; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of the base of the device; and Fig. 4 is a similar sectional detail view of the holder for the marking material employed in conjunction with the device.
The principal feature of the device is an elongated member, specifically a rod, A, that with a view to convenience in shipping, par ticularly by mail, as also with a view to convenience in use, as will hereinafter appear, is made of jointed construction. The two parts a a may be detachably secured together by means of a ferrule 66-, as shown, or any other suitable joint. Slidably movable along such rod (or, where sectional, upon the lower section a thereof) is the marking member B proper, consistin of a circular disk centrally perforated and provided with a sleeve or ferrule 7) at right angles to its face, that is adapted to inclose the rod A forming the sup orting member of the device. The ends of this sleeve are Specification of Letters Patent.

compressed, Fig. 4, so as to frictionally engage the rod, thereby permitting the disk to be secured at any point alon the rod while still leaving it adjustable as desired. In the top face of the disk, preferably formed, where the disk consists of a piece of sheet metal by simply stampin the same, is a radially disposed recess b intersecting the periphery of the disk and adapted to receive the piece of chalk B or like material whereby-the actual marking is efi'ected. A spring clip b likewise radially disposed, is adapted to retain the piece of chalk in place.
\Vhile, as will appear, the device as thus far described is fully susceptible of use, I also provide in connection with the support A a stand A in the form of a convex base provided with a central opening (i Fig. 3, into which the lower end of the supporting rod may be stepped. Such lower end is provided with an encircling groove a that is adapted to be engaged by a spring catch a on the base, when the rod-end is thus in place. The base is thus secured against accidental detachment, and may be carried about with the rest of the device.
In use, where the device is being employed by a party other than the one being fitted, or in connection with a garment mounted on a stand, simply the lower section of the support will ordinarily be employed, and the base A last described can be omitted. This is the form in which the device appears to the right in Fig. 2. In this form the upper end of the rod section a is grasped between the fingers of the hand and twirled so as to cause the piece of chalk B to mark upon the surface of the skirt or like garment at a succession of points about the same. Where the person being fitted is using the device, the longer support formed by joining the two sections of the rod together, as well as the base are desirably employed, the latter for the reason that it would otherwise be more diflicult to hold the device in the vertical position which is necessary if the mark is to be at the determined elevation; otherwise the mode of using the device is as has just been described.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in operation my improved skirt marker is both simple and convenient, while its inexpensive character will adapt it to general use, and not confine it to large tailoring establishments.
I should call particular attention to the advantage residing in having the chalk borne on a disk, for I am thereby enabled to mark upon the yielding material. of the skirt without displacing the same, which would be the tendency were such chalk borne at the end of a simple arm. This is one of the chiliculties connected with the prevailing type of marker, wherein the chalk is supported at the outer end of an arm pivoted about the center of a stand upon which the garment to be marked is mounted. Each mark in the case of my device is separately made, thus insuring a greater degree of accuracy in the measurement.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my inventi0n:-
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a base, a vertically disposed rod rotatably supported at its lower end substantially centrallyin said base and adapted to be twirled between the fingers by its upper end, a disk transversely mounted on said rod and adjustable therealong, a piece of marking material, and resilient means upon said disk adapted to secure such marking material to said disk so as to project beyond the periphery thereof.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a vertically disposed rod rotatably supported at its lower end in said base and adapted tobe twirled between h fingers by its upper end, means for detachably thus securing such lower rod end in said base, and a marker projecting laterally from said rod.
Signed by me this 11th day of April, 1908.
CHRISTIAN A. RITTMAN.
