REEL FOR EYEGLASSES.

To all whom it may concern.:

' Be it known that I, (iconen H. DAY, a citizen ofr the United States, and a resident of Southbridge, county of W'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lteels for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention relates to eye glass reels and has for its object to improve and simplify `the construction thereof.

My invention will be fully described here inafter. and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure lis a rear elevation, of my improved reel'; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the back plate removed; Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of lig. et; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale and Fig. 5 is a face view of the back plate looking from the front.

A is the back plate whielris provided with a lflange B and lugs or ears C. A cover I) is adapted to 'engage the flange B of the back plate, and is provided with notches E into which the lugs o r ears C of the back plate are arranged to tit, so that the cover is' incapable of being rotated relatively to the back plate. 'lhe cover 1) is provided with an inwardly enti-endingl tube F which is carried by said cover. This tube 1*" is internally screw-threaded to receive the Screw threaded center-post (i whichis provided with a smooth bearing portion G', the purpose of which will be more fully described hereinafter.

It is to he understood that if desired the center-post may be otherwise secured to the cover D than described above.

H is a flat ring having a circumferential lip H which forms a receptacle for the actuating spring I. One end of said spring first .passesthrough slot H2 in the lip H. toward the outside and then through another slot H5 in said lip toward the inside, the end of said spring being thus held securely in osition. The other end of the spring is tastened to one of a series of projections F on the tube F. as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The

means of fastening may be used. The ring 1l is further provided with a portion H which frictionally engages the periphery of the disk or center piece J. K is another ring having a portion K bent at right an-y gies and adapted to engage the portion H4 of the member H. The rings H, K, and disk J thus form the reel proper and are heldA together by friction or, if desired, may be otherwise secured together, as for instance by soldering. The cord or chain L, one end of which is suitably fastened to the reel, is' wound on the portion K between the rings K and H.

G is a stationary ratchet which forms )art of, or is secured to the post G. A screw passes through a central opening A in the back plate A, into the portion G of the post Gr which is internally threaded for the reception of said screw. This screw M thus serves to hold the parts together and the ratchet G2 sei-vesto prevent the reel disk J from leaving the smooth portion G of the post G. A suitable opening D is provided in the cover D for the cordor chain L, to pass through, the end of which cord or chain has secured to it the snap hook N, which 'may be of any desired form.

It is to be further understood that the post G is preferably threaded in a direction opposite tothe spring pressure or in other words is so threaded that the pressure of the spring will have a tendency to ti liten said post and prevent said post from acking out or becoming loosened.

1. The combination of a cover, a back plate, an internally threaded center post secured to the cover, a reel mounted to turn on said post, a spring connected with the reel,

'3. The combination of a casing composed of cover and back plate, an internally threaded center post secured to one of the parts of the casing, a reel mounted to turn 'said tube,
