Be it known that I,"EDWARD CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the count-y of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to secure a construction whereby the driving pulley will be located at such a point that its rotation will not cause vibrations or jars which affect the filing done by the machine; to rovide means for adjusting and control ing the stroke; to provide a file-carrying spindle which can be adjusted independently of its operating connections with the driving pul- A holding the same in its proper position against the work; to secure an mexpensive and durable construction, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accom anying drawings, in which like numerals 0 reference indicate the same parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved filing machine; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the .same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line a2w, Fig. .1, looklng downward, and
with certain lateral file guides removed for greater clearness; Fig. 4 is a plan of the file guidin means complete, and Fig. 5 is a side f a portion of the' adjusting means for said work-table, looking in the direction of the arrow on Fig. 3.
In said drawings, 1 indicates an upright or' columncomprising a base 2, a top or curved port-ion 3, and an arm 4 extending at right angles from the said column beneath the 'top portion 3 and in the same plane therewlth. A two-speed cone pulley 5 is mounted on one end of a driving shaft 6 journaled in a bracket 7 near the base 2 of the column, and on the opposite end of said shaft a crank box 8 is secured. A crank pin 9 is slidably adjustable in said box 8, and one end of a connecting rod 10 is secured to said pin 9; said rod extends upward and is Specification of Letters Patent.

connected at its other end to the arm 11 of a driving lever 12 fulcrumed as at 13 near the top of the column. The opposite or long arm 14 of said'driving lever serves to reciprocate a vertical spindle 15 which has bearings 16 and 17 respectively, in the top portion 3 and arm 4 of the column. These bearings are preferably each split longitudinally, as at 90, and provided with lugs 91, 91, on o posite sides of the split which receive a c amping screw 92 whereby the bearing can be adjusted to the spindle to take up wear or the like. To connect said driving lever 12 and spindle 15, a split collar 18 is clamped to the spindle and connected to the side of the arm 14 by a stud 19 passing through a slot 20 in said arm.
In operation of the mechanism thus described, the crank pin 9 is adjusted in its crank box 8 to the proper radial point to give the stroke desired, and is then fastened at said point, a drivin belt from a counter shaft and overhead pufiey furnishing power to the driving pulley 5. The said crank box is thus rotated and in turning operates the connecting rod 10 and imparts an oscillating movement to the driving lever 12, which in turn rcciprocates the spindle'l5 in its guides 16, 17, the slot 20 allowing freedom for the stud 19. The said spindle 15 is hollow or tubular, and at its lower end receives a drawin chuck 21 by which a file of any required kind can be mounted in the spindle, the one shown being indicated by the reference numeral 22. For drawing the chuck 21 into the spindle, a rod 27 screwed into the inner end of the chuck extends upward through the length of the spindle and has a projecting threaded end which receives a nut 28 abutting against the top end of the spindle. Thus by turnin said nut 28 the chuck 21 may be moved longitudinally with respect to the spindle in removing or inserting a'file. Near the base 2 of the column 1 and at its side next the spindle 15 above described, is a vertical slideway 29, preferably projecting from the said column with undercut opposite edges 30 and being integral with said column. This slideway29 receives the foot 31 of a horizontally projecting bracket 32,
the bracket can be adjusted to different heights as may be desired. The said foot 31 of the bracket is large and extends a considerable length along the slideway 29, as shown, so as to secure a firm strong bearing thereon, and the body of the bracket 32 is arranged edgewise and made broad in its vertical dimension, as shown in, side view of the machine such as Fig. 1. An angle piece 37 is located at the outer end of the said bracket 32, comprising arms 38, 39 at a substantially right angle to each other and connected at their upper edges by a strengthening web 40. Both arms of this angle piece 37 are, like the body portion of the bracket 32, bnoad in side View or arranged edgewise to resist vertical strain.
One arm, 38, of the angle piece 37 lies flatwise against the inner side of the bracket 32 and is provided with a curved rib 41 which fits a corresponding groove 12 in the adjacent face of the bracket, the bottom of said groove being slotted as at 43. A clamping bolt 44 passes through said slot 43 and arm 38 of the angle piece, and receives a nut 45 at the inner side of the latter. Obviously, by loosening the said clamping nut, the angle piece may be adjusted upon the bracket 32, and so tilted into planes at clifferent inclinations in the direction of the length of the bracket 32. The other arm, 39, of the angle piece 37 has at its outer face a horizontally disposed curved groove 46, and which receives the correspondingly shaped rib 47 of a post 18, and which post thus lies at its lower end fiatwise against the angle piece in a vertical plane at right angles to that of the bracket 32. A clamping bolt 49 extends through the ribbed portion of the post and grooved arm of the angle piece and receives a nut 50 at the inner side, the arm of the angle piece being slotted along the bottom of its groove to allow adjustment. It will be noted that the adjustment thus attained provides for tilting in a direction at right angles to that of the adjustment previously described and 1 thus the post 48 can be brought into any desired position. The said post 48 abuts at its lower extremity 51 against a shoulder 52 upon the angle piece, both surfaces being curved to correspond to the movement of the parts, and the outer faces of the parts being flush and provided with graduations to indicate the amount of angular movement. At its upper end, said post receives the work table 54 and is rigidly secured thereto in any suitable manner. Said work table 54 has a central aperture 56 for the file 22 to pass through, and is preferably circular in shape with except-ion of its edge 57 next the column 1, which is straight. The said table 54, it will be understood, is
' fast upon the post 4-8, but can be broughtinto any desired position by means of the adjustments above described. That is, the elevation of the table can be changed by moving the bracket 32 up or down its slideway 29, and it can be tilted out of the horizontal in any direction desired, by means of the connections of the angle piece 37 with the bracket 32 and post 48, respectively. Furthermore, each adjustment can be made by loosening only a single nut. It will be noted that the grooves 42' and 46 and the angl piece 37 have flaring sides, and that theyribs 41 and 4:7 are correspondingly tapered so as to wedge tightly in the grooves when the clamping bolts are tightened up. This insures a. very solid and stable connection, which will not jar or develop lostmotion by continued use and wear.
For holding a piece of work, as 58 in Figs. 1 and 2, against upward displacement during filing, a finger 59 is arranged in upright position adjacent to the spindle 15 and adjustably held in a clamp 60 on the bearing 17 of the arm at. In order to hold the file against being deflected or bent out of position by the pressure of a piece of work against it, I have provided a main guide roller 67 adapted to lie against the file on the opposite side thereof from the work being done. This roller is preferably of brass, and mounted horizontally in a plate 68 which occupies a horizontal position partly overlying the top edge of the bracket 32 and being fulcrumed thereto by a screw 69. An arm 70 of the'said plate is provided with a link 71 pivoted thereto at one end and threaded at its other end to receive a knurled screw cap 72 and which screw cap has a reduced neck 73 lying in a forked bracket 7% fast upon the bracket 32. Thus by turning the screw cap 72 the plate 68 will be swung to shift the guide roller 67 with respect to the file. Upon the said plate 68 are fulcrumed as at 75, 76 other plates or levers 77 and 78, carrying guide rollers 79 and 80 which also lie in a horizontal plane, but at right angles to the main guide roller 67 so as to engage the opposite edges of the file 22 as shown in the drawings. These auxiliary plates or levers 77 and 78 are each independently adjustable by means of a link and screw cap like the one already described and adjustable in a bracket 81 (or 82) on the main plate 68.
By the guide rollers thus described, it will be evident that the file in my improved machine may be held positively to its work without regard to any position into which the work table may have been tilted or swung. It should further be noted that in my improved construction of machine, loosening of the split collar 18 upon the spindle l5 enables the file to be turned into the exact position desired for it or raised or lowered the file could be removed from the work in this way and great convenience is thus secured, as for instance if it is desired to file successive pieces of work with the table in the same position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. The combination with a supporting bracket, of an angle piece having one of its arms connected to said bracket and adapted to adjust angular-1y with respect thereto in a vertical plane, a post having its lower end connected to the other arm of said angle piece and adapted to adjust angularly with respect thereto in a vertical plane, the two members of one of said adjustable connections having vertical contacting faces one provided with a rib and the other with a groove both curved in vertical plane, the groove flaring in cross section and the rib correspondingly tapered and adapted to wedge tight in said groove, horizontally projecting clamping means for said members accessible from the side of the same, and a work table on said post.
21 The combination with a supporting arm, of a post having a rounded end and a curved rib on its side, said supporting arm being recessed at its outer vertical face to receive said post and form a seat for the rounded end thereof and grooved at said outer face to receive the rib of the post, means for clamping said arm and post together, and a work table on said post.
3. In a filing machine, the combination with a spindle adapted to support the file, means for reciprocating said spindle, and
" means for supporting the work, of a plate pivoted upon said supporting means to swing in a plane substantially at right angles to the said spindle and having a lever arm, a link pivoted at one end to said arm and having its other end screwed therein, a
screw cap engaging said threaded link and having a reduced neck, a bracket fixed upon the said supporting means and being forked to receive said neck, and a roller mounted in said plate.
4. In a filing machine, the combination with a spindle adapted to carry the file, means for reciprocating said spindle, and an adjustable bracket for supporting the work, of a plurality of plates fulcrumed upon said bracket to swing in planes substantially at right angles to the said spindle and having each a lever like arm, rollers mounted one in the end of each of said plates opposite said arm and adapted to engage different sides of the file, threaded links connected one to each of said arms, female screw members one on each of said links, and means for holding said female screw members against longitudinal movement with respect to the bracket.
5. In a filing machine, the combination with a spindle adapted to carry the file, means for reciprocating said spindle, and an adjustable bracket for supporting the work, of a plate pivoted upon said bracket to swing in a plane substantially at right angles to the spindle, a roller mounted in said plate, a threaded link pivoted to an arm of said plate, a screw cap engaging said threaded link, means holding said screw cap against movement with respect to the bracket, auxiliary plates pivoted on the main plate, rollers in said auxiliary plates, threaded links pivoted to said auxiliary plates, independent screw caps engaging said links, and means holding said screw caps against longitudinal movement with respect to the main plate.
