PETER RANK, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
BOX-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed January 7, 1910. Serial No. 536,941.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER RANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of I ing and sealing hinged covers on boxes, es-
` modified.
pecially the kind of boxes or cases used in shi ping bottled beer, wine and other bottle goods; and the object is to provide a boxcover fastener which will be eilicient, cheap and durable.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a top view of a box with my new cover fastener' applied to it` and sealed. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a-a in Fig. 1 with the seal omitted Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3)6 in Fig. 1 with the seal omitted and the Fig. 4l isa detail side view of the locking bolt with the lower end slightly Fig. 5 is a detail bottoni view of the striking `plate secured at the under side p of the box cover and formed with cams for turning the locking bolt.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the front wall of the box, which has a cover 2 hinged at 3 to the rear wall. Near the middle of the front edge the cover is provided with a downwardly flaring elongated aperture 4, in which is fitted a striking plato 5, whose corners are secured to the under side of the cover by rivets or like means 6, which pass also through the corners of a lid plate 7 placed upon the top of the cover. Said plate 7 is formed with an elongated aperture 8 registering with the aperture in the cover or lid 2, and at each side of said slot the plate is formed with a cam or incline 9 whose highest portion forms a shelf l0, and near one of said shelves the plate is provided with a sealing lug 11 having a hole 12 for a sealing wire 13, which will presently be further described. The middle portion of the striking plate is bulged upward to it in the wooden cover and in the middle of the bulge is an elongated aperture 14: of which the surrounding edge 15 is projected upward into the aperture 8 of the lid plate; this engagement of the two plates insures the correct meeting position of the holes in both plates for the rivets 6; it also prevents contact of the head 16 of the locking bolt 17 with the lid plate in passing upward therethrough, which prevention 1s a great advantage, since the cover is usually closed by throwing it down on the box, and the result is that very frequently the lid plate is loosened, bent or broken by the head of the locking bolt, and if the bolt has only a single sealing wing or arm at one side of its upper end, such arm or the bolt itself is bent out of shape by the lid plate. For these reasons the resistance between the cover plate or plates and the top of the lookin bolt should be reduced to a minimum, ant to that end I construct the .parts as follows:
The locking bolt 17 is journaled in a bearing 18 of a plate 19 which is secured upon the inner side of the front wall l of the box. Said journal is provided with a gap 20 in which a collar 21 of the lower end of the locking bolt rotates. The head 1G of the locking bolt or fastener bolt is formed with two diarnetrically opposite arms or wings 22, each of which is provided with an aperture 23 for the sealing wire 13, and the upper ed e of the wing is wedge-shaped as at 24 in ig. 1 and curved out and downward to the end of the wing; and the striking plate 5 has its concave under side formed with two opposite wedge-shaped cams 25 (best shown in Fig. 5) the sides or faces of each cani converge upward and inward so as to guide the wings 22 of the bolt head into the slot 14 when the cover is thrown or forced down to its closed position. Experimeuting has demonstrated that there is no possibility to make the edges 25 of the cams strike so exactly the edges 24 of the sealing wings that the cover can thereby be prevented from closing.
In the operation or use of the device, the parts being secured as shown on the box and its cover, when the cover is to be closed no attention need be paid to the position in which the bolt 17 may have been turned; the cover is simply closed by its own weight or by hand and the cams 25 will act on the wings 22 and with ease bring them into line with the slot 14, and to appear above the same; the operator then turns the bolt so that the wing nearest to the lug 1l comes close to the lug, whereupon the sealin wire 18 is inserted through the wing and t e lug and the ends of the wire secured in a'lead seal 26, orV other'suitable sealing means.
. When the fastener is to be used on shipping boxes, whose coversit is desirable to have firmly and tightly closed, I provide the lid plate with the cams 9 and shelves 10 for the wings 22 to move upon in turning the bolt into sealing position, the cams 9 will then force the wings upward and thereby tighten the cover, and the shelves will support the wings in the raised position without any tendency to turn the bolt back from the fastened position, as might happen if inclined cam faces were to support the wings during shipping and transportation of the box.
In F ig. 4t is shown that the collar 21 may be liemispheric or rounded as at 2l so as to reduce the friction surface at its bottom and thereby facilitate the turning of the bolt during the closing of the cover.
It will be observed that the striking plate 5 is sunk into the lower side of the cover to permit the cover to fall closely down on the box; and that both the striking plate and the lid plate 7 are preferably extended to the front edge ofthe cover, and that even if not extended fully to the edge, the two plates being secured together strengthen and protect said edge against breakage which it would otherwise be very liable to onA account of the slot cut through it and the rough handling to which such boxes are often exposed.
IVhat I claim is:
l. The combination with a box having a hinged cover, of a plate secured to the front wall of the box, a bolt journaled and retained in said plate and extending upwardly above the edge of the wall, the upper end of the bolt having two oppositely disposed apertured fiat arms, each with a curved and wedge-shaped upper edge, a striking plate secured to the under side of the cover and having in its middle an upward bulge extending up through the cover and provided with a central slot, the inner sides of the bulge having two opposite wedge-shaped cams, each with two cam faces converging into the said slot, a second plate secured upon the top of the cover and having a slot registering with the slot in the bulge of the striking plate and near oneside of its slot a lug with an aperture registering with the aperture in either of the apertured arms of the bolt that may be turned to the lug for purpose of sealing the bolt.
