ALEXANDER LAWRIE, OF PUMPVILLE, TEXAS.
FELLY-J'OINT BRIDGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed October 20, 1909. Serial No. 523,698.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER LAWRIE, citizen of the United States, residing at Pumpville, in the county of Valverde and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Felly- Joint Bridges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle wheels and improvements for strengthening the same, and it has for its object, a simple, durable and efiicient construction of felly jointing bridge or shoe designed to be applied to a wheel in order to give support to the felly joint which is, as well known, a weak spot in vehicle wheels.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form or embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a joint bridge or shoe detached; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification; Fig. 5 is a transverse section thereof; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another modified form of which Fig. 7 is a transverse section; and, Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are perspective views of other modifications.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved felly joint bridge or shoe is of segment shape as shown with side members 1 having preferably straight edges 2 and a curved connecting member 3. The bridge is designed to fit over the felly so as to overlap the joint thereof, and may be easily secured in place by the same bolts 4 which secure the tire to the felly at the joint of the latter.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to any exact construction and proportion of parts except as defined within the appended claims. For instance, a modification of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 4, which shows the bridge, here designated 1 substantially like the bridge de scribed except that the bridge 1 is formed to one side of the median line with an interior longitudinally extendin rib or flange 5 to add strength to the bridge and designed to fit within a longitudinal roove formed-in the outer edge of the f ly, thereby, also seirving to assist in holding the device in p ace.
As another embodiment of the invention, reference is to be had to Fig. 6, wherein the shoe designated 1? is formed with a plurality of these flanges designated 5", the same being arranged on the opposite sides of the center or median line of the device just as the flange 5 is disposed so as to interfere in no wise with the passage of the tire bolts 4. In this modification, the flanges 5 extend throu hout the entire len th of the device, but it is to be understoo that this is not essential. For instance, as illustrated in Fig. 8 the flanges designated 5' may terminate short of the ends of the shoe or bridge 1.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple bridge or shoe for felly joints which may be cheaply manufactured out of any desired metal or material and cast or otherwise formed as an integral or onepiece structure as desired, and which may be readily applied.
Still another modification is illustrated in Fig. 9 where the felly joint bridge or shoe is designated 1. This modification is substantially like the modification illustrated in Fig. 8, except that the ribs or flanges 5 are reversely curved.
Fig. 10 shows a modification in which the joint is designated 1 and is provided with beveled ends as indicated at 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A felly joint bridge, comprising a segment shaped member embodylng side por-.
tions straight on one edge and curved on their opposite edges and connected at such last named edges by a curved connecting web adapted to fit over and upon the outer edge of a felly at the joint thereof, the connecting Web being formed with openings for side members to one side of the median line the tire bolts, as and for the purpose set of the connecting Web. 10 forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature 2. A felly joint bridge, embodying side in Pr of WitneSSeS- members and a curved connecting Web, the ALEXANDER LAVRIE. [11. s.] Web being formed with openings .to receive l/Vitnesses: the tire bolts and With a flange extending Jos. RosENFIELD,
longitudinally between and spaced from the R. HUNNIOUTT.
