ADA COWAN KENDRICK, OF WILLIAMSBURG, KANSAS.
DESK ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed July 23, 1909. Serial No. 509,162.
4To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, ADA CowAN KEN- DRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Villiamsburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Desk Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
It is the obj ect of the present invention to provide an improved construction of copy holder for employment in connection with typewriters and the invention aims to provide a device of this class constructed so as to not only support the copy or note being transcribed but also to serve as a writing desk and as a container for copy or typewriting paper and the like.
A still further object of the invention is to provide such a construction of device of this class that it may be applied to any ordinary typewriter table in proper position with respect to the typewriter thereon, and may be quickly taken apart whereby the typewriter may be removed or more readily cleaned.
The invention also aims to provide, in a device of this class, an element which may be positioned to obscure the keyboard of thc typewriter whereby the device will be rendered useful to those learning the touch system of typewriting.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device embodying the present invention applied to an ordinary typewriter table. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken from front to rear through the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the side supporting members of the device.
In the drawings, there is shown a portion of an ordinary typewriter desk indicated in general by the reference character A and it is upon this desk that the device embodying the present invention may be removably supported.
The device embodying the present invention is comprised in part of side supporting members each of which is indicated in general by the reference numeral 6 and is in the form of a trapezoidal plate provided at its upper and lower end edges with a flange the flange at the lower end edge of the plate being indicated by the numeral 7 and that at the upper end edge by the numeral 8. The flanges 7 of the two side supportingr members are formed each with several keyhole slots indicated by the numeral 9 and these slots are engaged by screws or studs 10 which are secured in or upon the upper surface of the typewriter table A. It is preferable that both of the side supporting members be fluted as at 11 whereby they will be materially strengthened and one of the side supporting members, preferably that one at the right hand side, is provided upon its outwardly presented face with a plurality of pen or pencil receiving sleeves 12 which may be separate each from the others. The upper flanges 8 of the side supporting members are formed also each with a plurality of keyhole slots which are indicated by the numeral 13 and these slots are engaged by headed studs 14 formed upon the under side of the end portions of a frame 15 having upstanding side flanges 16 and a rear upstanding flange 17. This frame, it will be readily understood, may be easily disconnected from the side supporting members when so desired and when connected with the said side supporting members, it will be rigidly and firmly supported above the typewriter table A. The side and end flanges 16 and 17 of the frame 15 serve to confine and hold firmly in place upon thc said frame, although removably, a receptacle or casing 18 having top, bottom, end and rear walls but open at the forward edge or side. It is preferable that this receptacle be slid into position upon the frame 15 from the front and it is employed for holding typewriting paper and the like.
The forward edge of the top wall of the receptacle 18 is overturned whereby to afford an upstanding bead 19'and the said wall of the receptacle may be used in the same manner as the surface of an ordinary writing desk if desired, as will be readily understood, the ledge 19 serving to prevent the projection over the said forward edge of the top of papers upon the upper surface thereof. Another advantage to be derived from this feature of the invention lies in the fact that it is extremely useful to those who are learning or practicing the touch system of typewrit-ing inasmuch as the receptacle 18 when in proper position upon the supporting frame 15 will obscure the typewriter keyboard, that is from the View of the operator if sitting in the ordinary position.
As far as the invention has been described, it will be understood that the typewriter in connection with which the invention is emporting members are trapezoidal in form and inclined forwardly upwardly, they do not obstruct the carriage and related portions of the typewriter,
In connection with the structure just described, there may be employed, a copy desk,
supported from thesaid structure through the medium of: an'arm 22 the lower end of which is adapted to fit in a sleeve socket 2l Vupon one` ofV the side supporting members 6,
preferably the left-hand one.
It. will be readily understood that the copy supporting desk. may be adjusted to prac-- tically any desired angle suitable to the operator, not only with respect to the arm by which it isv supported but with respect to the side supporting members 6 of the first described structure through the swinging of said'l arm upon its connection with such members.`
Vlhat is claimed iszl. In a device of theclass described, supporting. members provided each at its upper end. with a flange. formed with keyhole slots, a frame carrying upon its under side` studs engaging. in said slots, saidJ frame connectingy the'said supporting members, and a, casing supported upon the frame. l
2. In af device of the class described, a
cooperating with the flanges to hold the same in position thereon, said open frame servingv as a connection between the members, and a casing removably supported upon the open frame.
4l.` In a device of the class described, forwardly inclined supporting members provided each at its upper end with a flange, an open frame disposed4 upon the said upper ends of the members and connecting the same, the said members and `frame beingV designed to straddle the key board of a typewriter, and a casing removably supported upon the frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signay ture in the presence of two witnesses.
ADA COWAN KENDRICK.
