Description

E JONAS CLOTHES LINE HOLDER.
APrLIoATIoN FILED JUNE 28,1910` Patented NW1 IIIIIIIIII nl. m 0
ERNEST JONAS, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOTHES-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed .Tune 28, 1910. Serial No. 569,408.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST JONAS, a subject of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Line Holders, of which the following is a specilication.
The basic object of my invention is to facilitate the hanging of clothes from elevated windows of dwelling houses, whereby a user can expeditiously and easily operate, from the interior of a room, an endless clothesline, without the necessity of laborionsly leaning out of the window, or of stooping over the clothes-line.
Other subsidiary objects, going to make up the ultimate perfection of the whole device, will appear as the nature of the invention more fully appears.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the underlying principle of my invention, and
in the drawing: Figure l is a perspective view, viewed from the interior of a room, of my invention, as set up in position for use in a window-casing, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the supporting-member and the line-supporting arm in their correlated positions.
iReferring, now, in detail to the drawing: a suitable support, such as a horizontalbar 1, is secured, in any suitable manner, preferably to the exterior of the window-casing, (desirably, a few inches below the center of the window). Associated with said bar 1 is a line-supporting-member, desir-ably an arm 2, provided with a longitudinal slot 3. The means for holding said arm 2 to the bar 1, in positions of desired adjustment, preferably comprise a bolt 4 projecting through said slot 3 and the bar 1 and carrying, at its top, a nut 5 and, at its bottom, a turning-handle, crank, or lever 6.
Suitable means are carried by the arm 2 for guiding an endless clothes-line, and such means desirably comprise a pulley 7 carried in the bifurcated inner extremity of said arm. Suitable means for holding the endless clothes-line in a fixed position are desirably provided, and they preferably comprise a clamp 8 carried on the top of the bar l, and a clamp 9 carried on the bottom of said bar. A pulley 10 is carried by a pole in the yard and supports the line at this point.
By the construction shown and described, it will be seen that the clothes-line supporting arm 2 may be swung beneath, so as to lie parallel with, the bar 1, and thus out of the way of the window, when it is desired to close the same.
It will be noted that the clamp 4 and the slot 3 permit a dual movement of the arm 2, i. e., a rotary movement on the clamp 4 as a pivot, and a sliding or lateral movenient.
Assuming the arm. 2 to be beneath the bar 1, and it is desired to use the device, the procedure, or modus operand/a', is as follows: The clamp 4 is loosened and the arm 2 then swung so as to stand at right-angles to the bar 1. The arm 2 is then pulled rearward, or toward the operator, until the clamp 4 engages the end of the slot 3. Thereupon, said clamp is tightened to hold the arm 2 in the positioln just described. The endless clothes-line is now placed on the pulley T and the wash hung on the section or portion of the line passing beneath the bar 1, the line being pushed away from the operator as each piece of apparel is placed upon the line. After the line is completely lullig with the wash, the section of the line passing over the bar 1 is placed in the clamp 8, which is thereupon tiehtened, and the section of line passing beneath the bar l is likewise placed in the clamp 9, which is thereupon tightened. Now, the clamp 4 is loosened once more, and the arm 2 pushed away from the operator (the arm 2 sliding on the clamp 4) then, the arm 8 is swung back so as to lie beneath and parallel with the par 1, after which the clamp 4 is tightenec.
Having thus fully described the construction and assemblage of parts of my device, it will be obvious that my device comprises but few parts, that these are not liable to get out of order, and that the device presents a maximum of eiiiciency in operation, at a minimum cost to manufacture.
Having thus fully exhibited my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A clothes-line hanger, comprising a bar, supportable at opposite sides of a window-frame, an endless clothes-line supporting-member pivotally and slidably .connected thereto, and means carried by said bar for holding the line in a fixed position.
2. A clothes-line hangen' comprising a by said support for holding the line in zi support, an endless clothes-line supporting xed position.
arm provided with a longitudinal slot T r means passing through said slot and said ERBESF JONAS support for holding said arm to said bar Witnesses:
and permitting both pivotal and slidable RUDOLPH ROSENBAUM,
movement of said arm, and mea-ns carried SAM. ROSENBAUM.
