BUNG.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL HEINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster' and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to bungs for beerkegs and other similar vessels, and more particularly to that class which are driven into a bushing which has been secured in the keg in such a way that to tap the keg, the central portion of the bung is driven inward through the bung to provide a place for the spigot, and when it is desired to rell the keg, the shell of the bung is removed and a new bung inserted.

My novel form of bung is so constructed from avsingle piece of wood or other suitable material that the central core or plug is nearly separated therefrom by means of an incision which is so made that the plug is tapered in form to prevent its being blown outward by the action of gases, etc., but may easily be driven inwardly, severing the integral ortion or ring.

To c ose the incision and make the bung tight, the bung is first made with straight parallel sides, the incision then made at the proper angle and the bung then pressed in a die which forces in the sides to close the incision and give the outer sides of the bung the proper taper to conform to the tapered hole of the bushing.

IVith these and other objects in View my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, which form a part of this application, an in which like figures of Specification of Letters Patent.

reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is full un erstood that while I have here describe my invention as here shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings z--Figure 1, is a Vertical sectional View of a bung, showing the straight sides and the incisions having been made. Fig. 2, is a view of the same, after having been pressed, showing the incision closed and the sides of the bung tapered, ready for use. Fig. 3, is a sectional View of the same, placed within the bushing. Fig. el., is a View of the same, after the lug has been driven out. Fig. 5, is a top p an View of the bung. Fig. 6, is a bottom plan view of the bung.

Referring to the drawings z-the bung is shown with the side walls 1, the plug 2, which is integral therewith at the ring 3, and the incision 4, which is cut upon a taper as described.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :m

A bung made of a single piece of material and provided with a separable plug or core having tapered sides and integral at its upper end with said bung; said bung having been given a conical shape under pressure so as to close the incision and make it practically solid, but not destroying the taper of said plug.
