MOTOB-PROFELLED PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. i, 1910.
Application 1ed.Apri1 13, 1309. Serial No. 489,585.
To @Il whom il". may concern.
lle it known that l, ANDREW K. Bn/rnzon, a citizen of the United States. reei'dii'lg at Wentzville. in the county of St. Charles and tit-ate of liiiesouri, have invented new and ueeful Improvements in Motor- Propelled Flows, of whieh'the following is av Speoilication.
',lhie invention relates to motor' propelled plowe, and has specially in view cert-ain im provenulnts therein which will permit of variousl relative adjustments of the plow and frame. and algo permit of the motor of the plow to be readily disengaged from the running' gear so that the power of the motor anar be utilized for running various tarniing maohinee.
has an axle 3 extern-ling In emmer-.tion with the foregoing the invention contemplates a novel type of Steeringl wheel for the plow which vill permit of ehort turns.l of the plow, the said steering mechanism being 0 arranged and located that it, as well as the levers for adjusting the various parts of the plow may be operated by one person. y
ln carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will, of Course, be understood that the essential features thereof are susceptible of a wide range-of structural arrangementsand details of parte,
a practical and preferred example of which is Shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a Side elevation of the improved motor plow. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. 1s a detail side elevation of the rear of one side of the motor plow. showino' the Steering i'nechaniem. Figs. 5, and t are detail views of the plow adjust-ing and holding mechanism. Figs. Sand Si are detail viewe of the land wheel adjueting mechanism.
Lilie characters of reference designate oorresponding parteA in the several figures of the accompanying drawings.
'Referring to said drawings. it will be seen that the improved motor ploufcomprime` }')rimaril v a. main. rectangular Shaped frame" formed of Side beanie'. l
and connecting end beams 2.
The front portion of said frame transversely thererof. the ends of which project.- bejvond the eide thereof, one end having a traction wheel l mounted thereon. The other end portion of said axle extends will beyond the side beam and passes through a slot or opening centrall'v located in a boxing or easing rarried b v the outer ends of horizontally arranged. outwardljv7 extending converging beamsy which have a rigid eonnertiou with the side beam l.` The said boxing or easing has vertical Side guidee for a block T carried b v a Stub Sha-ft 3a and abottom z xbutment n for limiting the downward movement of said block in said guides. ae will be more 't'ullv explained later. The free end of the y tub shaft bevond said land wheel 9.
The front portion of the frame carries. hanger brackets Ll() which form bearings for a shaft. el which has a pivotal strap engagement 42 with 'the free end of a plow beam 45%. The other end of said beam carries a shaft eti-l which has a pivotal engagement with brackets et?) having outetai'idiiig lateral upper ears* in which a pinion el? is mounted and which engageswith a plow hanger cae.- ing 48 having inturned aides il), one of which is in'ovided with ratchet teeth 50. Said hanger easinge being held in a pendent position from eaoh side beam l. Ti'ieower end of the branle-ts 45 have. engagement with plow share 5l... and also carry outstanding ears 32 which are engaged b v a bail link of a bail 54, the ends of which are iourna-led in bearings 55 in the Side beams 1. One of the ends of said bail projects through the eide beam and carries a rocker arm 56 which has a rod connection 57 with a vertical lever 5S having a ratchet engagement "with a ratchet segment Itl will be seen from the foregoing' that when the lever 58 is rocked the plow share will bel raised or lowered, the vertical movements of the same being guided b v the rack and pinion engagement described, and also that the plow may be left in any desired adjust-ed position by looking the lever to the gear Segment, the weight of the plow share being sustained by the said rack and pinion engagement.
The rear of the frame also Carries a third' gear segment 60 which is engagedbya lever (Si having a pawl, Said lever having a rod connection (l2 with a rocker arm 63 of a Shaft ttt which projects outwardly from the main frame and at.v its end carries a crank arm which connects with a rod or eye ($6 carried b v the slide block bearing 7 slidably mounted in the box or casing for the land wheel. lt will be see-n from the foregoing that by rocking the lever 61 the outstanding" side frame may be raised or lowered to iiicline or box or easing carries a "\wheel, the clutch ymechanism,
tilt themain frame in variousangles, which is of especial ilnportance when plowing adjacent to hills or rises, or
l means of the bracket arms 84 which project from the rear portions of the sidefbeams 1. It will therefore be seen thatall of the operative parts of the machine may be readily controlled hy the occupant of .the seat 80, thereby materially lessening the number 'of soperators required.
As the motor for propelling the machine-y Y is of' theusual, or any preferred typeffof' `gasolene engine, it hasv not been.'thought necessary to illustrate the same 1n detail other than what is necessary'to show its connection with the running gear. It will,
of course, bereadilyfunderstood that prof vision will be made for the proper installing of the fuel supply tank, cooling fluid tank,
- and sparking arrangement.
A prominent, feature of the invention, aside. from what has been described, is that by means of the sprocket connection 14 be-. tweenrthe running gear, the same Amay be readily disconnected when the plow is not to be used, and the gear 13 connected with other farming machinery, so that the same can be efficiently operated.
What I claim is A1. A plow comprising a main frame, a plow memberhaving its beam pivotally con nected to the `frame, hangervbrackets fixedly carried byv the side members of the frame `and provided with racks, pinions loosely journaled on 'the plowing member and engaging with said racks, and means separate from the pinions and racks for adjusting said plow mem :er vertically.
2. A plow comprising a main frame, a plow beam pivoted to said frame, a transverse shaft journaled on the beam and carrying pinions at each end, hangers fixedly carried by said frame and provided with ra'cks with which said pinionsengage, and means separate from the racks and pinions for raising and lowering said plow beam.
Afplowcomprising a main frame providedwith supporting wheels, a plow beam pivoted to saidfframe, brackets carried by said bealn, ashaft extending through said brackets, pinions mounted on the ends Aof said shaft, hanger brackets iXed to the sides of said frame and having internal racks.
with which said pinions engage, a bail connected to said beam brackets, and a lever `connected with said bail whereby when said lever is rocked a Vertical movement will be imparted to said plow beam.
In testimony whereof, I aHiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
