DETACHABLE FUEL-BOX FOR TRACTION-ENGINES.

i To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that L'HARRY C. CLAY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Fuel- Boxes for Traction-Engines, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a fuel-box and support which may be easily attached to or detached'from a traction-engine.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a coalbox constructed in accordance with myinvention and arranged in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of such box; Fig. 3, a similar View of a straw-rack; Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the eyes for supporting the box in position.

In the drawings, indicates the rear or firing end of a traction-engine boiler, and 11indicates one of a pair of usual bearing-brack ets, in which the main rear axle 12is supported.

Secured to the boiler 10 is a U shaped drawbar 13, suitably braced by braces 14, and extending from boiler 10 is a firingplatform 15, all of which parts are of usual construction. My invention consists of a pair of eyes 16,

each provided upon one side with an over-' hanging lip 17, thus forming a space 18, adapted to receive one arm of the draw-bar 13 'and thus support the eye in position parallel with said arm. Each eye 16 is provided at its upper side with a cup 19, adapted to receive a spring 20, and when the eye is placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, with lip 17 uponthe inside of one arm of the draw-bar 13, spring 20 serves as a support for the platform 15.

The fuel-box consists of a suitable fuel-receptacle 21, having secured to its under side a pair of forwardly-extending arms 22, which are adapted to be threaded through eyes 16 and the forwardends thereof carried beneath brackets 11, as shown in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the fuel-box may take an desired form-as, for instance, it may be a straw-receiving rack 23, provided with-th same forwardly-extending arms 22. V

suitable bolts or set-screws, if desired, and the arms 22 of a suitable form of fuel-box passed through said eyes and the forward ends of the arms passed beneath the bearingblocks 11, so that the device is thus held in position by meanswhich permits a very ready detachment of the apparatus.

Iclaim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a traction-engine, of supports carried at the rear thereof, and a fuel-box provided with a pair of forwardly-extendin arms which may be detach ably supported to the rear of the engine'by said supports.

2. The-combination, in a traction-engine, with the bearing-lugs, and the draw-bar, of a pair of eyes supported by the draw-bar, and a fuel-box having a pair of forwardly extending arms capable of beingpassed through said eyes and the forward ends of said arms passed beneath the lugs, for the purpose set forth.
