To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES R. HAYDEN, a

citizen of the United States of America, residing at Latouche, in the District of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Socks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This. invention relates to socks or stockings, and the principal object of the same is to construct the sock or stocking so that two separate and distinct heels will be provided which are oppositely-disposed to permit the sock or stocking to be reversed thereby assuring longer wear and durability to the same and also providing means whereby the heel not in use may be employed as a cushion for the arch of the foot, which prevents the foot being chafed by the footwear and also prevents the footwear slipping relative to the foot.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential fea tures thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrange ments, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary diagrammatical view of the improved sock. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the heels being folded. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the improved sock as it appears in use.

Referring to said drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the invention has been embodied in a sock that is of knitted material, the leg portion 1 of which has a gathered upper end 2 so that it will fit snugly about the leg of the wearer. The top and bottom of the foot 3 of the improved sock merge into the leg portion 1 through the medium of the oppositely-disposed heels 45, said heels being formed by enlarging and outwardly-rounding the sock at opposite points where the foot and leg portions join, thereby providing two separate and distinct oppositely-located heels.

As will be observed by reference to Fig. 1, the improved sock has its leg and foot integral at their central portion, which is accomplished by knitting through the same on a straight central longitudinal line 6. The outer portions of the leg and foot are made integral by knitting on lines that incline outwardly from the center of the foot and curve outwardly to form the heels and then continue on astraight line to form the leg.

The necessary shape for the sides of the heels is provided by separating the foot and leg on a right angular line 7, so that the lines of knitting of the foot and leg are at right angles to each other, the separated portions being joined by the stitching 8.

In use, it will be seen, that one heel may be folded over the arch of the foot, as shown in Fig. 3, to both cushion and protect the same, the other heel performing the usual function of a heel. As will be obvious, the foot may be readily swung to a position directly opposite to that shown in Fig. 3, which, reverses the positions and the functions of the heels.

The improved sock or stocking is primarily intended for use in cold climates, where boots are the common article of footwear, and, preferably, is formed of heavy woolen worsted. As is well known, boots when used on soft surfaces such as snow, or the like, are continually slipping upon the foot with the result that chafing of the foot is a frequent occurrence. The present invention, through the provision of the supplemental heel, provides means whereby a cushion may be formed over the arch of the foot so that the boot will fit snugly over the arch so that slippage is prevented.

hat I claim as my invention is The herein described knitted sock comprising a leg portion and a foot port-ion knitted integrally together along their center lines and along their outer portions, said outer portions being shaped to constitute oppositely disposed heels, the leg portions between the center and outer portions having the longitudinal rows of stitches outwardly curved to form flaps, said flaps being united to the foot portions by seams at right angles to the longitudinal rows of stitches in the flaps and parallel to the longitudinal rows of stitches in the heel portions of the foot which come opposite the ends of the said flaps.
