ERNST NORDBLAD, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
HOSIERY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application led February 25, 1918. Serial No. 219,030.
To all whom it may concern.'
e it known that I, ERNST NORDBLAD, a subject of Sweden, residing at South Bend, in the county' of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilosiery, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to socks or stookings provided with pockets for the toes, so that cach individual toe will have a separate covering and relatively protected.
'lhe object of the invention resides in the provision of a sock or stocking for the human foot en'rhodying a pocket for each toe, and in so knitting the same that there will be no distortion or twist to the toe portions when applied, so that the same may be worn with comfort. Such a sock or stocking is particularly useful for persons having tender feet, susceptible to chating between the toes, or to sweating between the toes, the fabric absorbing the sweat and preventing friction due to rubbing between the toes.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specication, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a View in elevation of a stocking made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view on an enlarged Scale of the toe portion of the stocking.
Fig. 3 is an edge View thereof, showing how the toe pockets overlap When the stocking is flattened out.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, I purpose providing a sock or stocking l, with individual pockets 2 for each toe of the foot. The problem of fitting the toes of a foot with a pocket for each toe, so that the stocking can be worn with absolute comfort. is much more difficult than fitting' the fingers of the hand with a glove. Because of the fact that the normal spread between the toes is less than between the fingers, and the further fact that, in many cases, due to the fit of the footwear Worn tending to eramp the toes together, so
that in time they naturally overlap more or less, provision must be made in the forni of the stocking to meet these conditions, in order that there may not be any twist given the. toe portions when the toes tend to overlap, and a neat close fit will obtain. In order that the toe pockets 2 occupy their natural position when applied to the foot having overlapping toes, the stocking is knitted so that the loops are viewed in longitudinal arrangement, as indicated at 3, will extend in parallelism lengthwise of the foot portion of theI stocking and in a right line to the end, or approximately the end, of the toe pockets. That is, the knitting operation will he such that, with the stocking flattened out, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and with the toc pockets overlapping, as shown in the last named ligure, the ribbing or longitudinal arrangement of the loops with respect to the length of the stocking, will extend in a straight line throughout the foot and toe portions of the stocking. It thus follows that when the stocking is applied to a foot having overlapping toes, that no distortion or twisting of the toe pockets will result, the fabric retaining its natural form.
Obviously, especially in the case of tender feet, any twisting of the toe pockets would cause hurt, and as I successfully over* come such tendency in the manner described, I have provided a stocking which can be worn with great comfort, and the individual toe pockets of which will materially reduce the discomforts due to sweat- .ing and chang between the toes.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is: y
1. As an article of manufacture, a stocking having individual toe pockets, the toe pockets being formed to normally overlap each other in regular order.
2. As an article of manufacture, a knitted stocking having individual toe pockets adapted to normally overlap each other with the stocking in form to receive the foot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ERNST NORDBLAD.
