LEG GARMENT.
Application filed ()ctober Lil, 1921. Serial No. 507,634.
To all whom 2'1 may concern."
Be it known that we, DENISE Sonia. and MAinnSannanous, both residing in New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved leg garment, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a leg covering, particularly adapted for womens use, of such construction that it maybe positioned over the shoe and stocking, and have the appearance of a spat or overgaiter, or a. cloth top shoe.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a leg covering which while affording warmth and protection to the leg of the wearer, is nevertheless neat and attractive in. appearance, and has the added advantage of fitting closely about the exterior of the shoe of the wearer, artificial means being provided to cause the garment to take on the appearance of the upper of a shoe, or a boot top or overgaiter.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific thanthose referred to above, will be in part obvious land in part pointed out in the coursc'of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein we have illustrated preferred forms of embodiment of our invention:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing our improved garment positioned upon the leg of a wearer.
Figure 2 is an elevational view, showing our improved garment.
Figure 3 is a similar view of form of construction; and
Figure 4 is a. view in perspective, partly broken away, showing a detail of construction.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters rcfcr to similar parts throughout the several thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of the garment, which as shown, is formed closely to [it the log of the \vcarcr, the material thereof bcing prefcra'bly formed of a closely kiiiltod elastic material,
another views the color of which in the present instance is preferably that usually employed in the manufacture of boot tops or cloth top shoes.
Permanently fastened to the upper open end of the garment, which preferably extends above the calf portion of the leg, is an endless elastic member 2, which it desired may be of ornamental design, asshown in the drawing.
The lower end of the garment, which is open-ended,v is provided with aportion 8, which preferably fits over the instep of the wearer, a portion 4: which fits over the heel, and portions 5 and (l which pass partially under the instep of the wearer, the latter portions being connected by an elastic band or stirrup.
The portions 3 and. 4: in the embodiment of our invention shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 are preferably formed at their lower edges so as to lie adjacent the seam that usually surrounds the upper of shoe,-intermediate the foot portion, and the portion enclosing the ankle, and are also constructed closely to hug or embrace the shoe over which the garment is intended to be worn. If the shoe is what is known as a low shoe or Oxford type of shoe, the lower end of the garment will overlap the upper edges thereof, giving the latter the appearance of a shoe having a cloth top, or ankle portion.
In order to more closely cause the garment to simulate a cloth top shoe or overgaiter, which usually is made of relatively nonelastic material and has a slit or opening at its lower end to enable it to be drawn over the foot with the shoe thereon we preferably form upon the garment a vertical series of stitches 8, to conform to the shape of buttonholes, and sew buttons 9 in the place or line that would ordinarily be occupied by buttons if the same were sewed upon the garment adjacent the open or split portion which portion of the garment our improved device is intendedto simulate. This series of artificial buttons and huttonholes is situated on the outside of the garment, where they are usually employed to close the afore said slit provided in overgaiters.
it will accordingly be seen that we have providcd a device well adapted to attain, among others, all the ends and objects above pointed out, in a very simple yet ellicient manner. The garmentwhen worn will be comfort-able to the wearer, enabling the latt er to wear stockings of delicate fabrics. It is easily removed, and yet is neat and esthetic in appearance.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope the following claim, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying ,drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
-Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A garment of the class described, comprising a 'spat portion of elastic material and an elastic extension integral therewith arranged to fit over the calf of the Weasel,
portion, and said spat portion having elastic fore and rear extensions constructed and arranged to simulate the top of a Shoe.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
