' To all whom it may concern.'
'-f" 'Be 'it known that I, GEORGE W. KELLooo, la' resldent of Rochester,.in the county ot Monroe and State of New York, have nvent-ed certain new andV useful Improvements in Cam-Driven Multiple-Cylinder Pum Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the ollowing toibe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art vto which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention rela-tes to air pump apparatus, and t-o eflicient driving and operating devices therefor, the object of the invention being to provide an apparatus of large capacity, easily and smoothly driven, and of comparatively lowheight. i
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out. l In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention and forms-part of the specificatiom-Figure l is a side View ofthe )referred construction of the apparatus; v1g. 2 1s a section thereof on line 6, 6 of he apparatus comprises a plurality of parallel pump cylinders l, in each of which 1s a piston -2 having a rod 3. Said cylinders are supported on a hollow' base, preferably divided into upper and lower sections 4a, 4t, the latter supporting a shaft 4, on which `are .circular eccentrics-, one for each cylinder,
and said eceentrics arepreferably spaced or st epped'around theshaft so as to actuate, the pistons successively. Connected'to each piston rod is a strong link-like body 22, within each of which one of the eeeentrics is held and in which it rotates with shaft 4 which may be driven by any suitable power. As here shown thecylinders 1 areall mounted on a common pla-te 20 which is secured to` :the upper section 4 of the body. Each oylinder has an air inlet!) at such a point' in its length that the piston on its back stroke passes 'below the inlet, whereby air is admitted which is compressed on the upst-roke and driven by valve 10. As before indicated, compression in the cylinders follows one after the other, and the air may be led from pi e -11 to any suitable reservoir or place o use directly, or may be diverted' through one or' more of .the branch connecto accommodate said tionsto whistles or other derives to be operated. y V y In vorder that the size. and weight ol? the pump may bel reduced. and to provide. guides or ways for the, links .22 to lnove in', the eastings 43,4",are earh east with a eoinparat i\'el small body, and with projeeting interiortv grooved parts 23 ot suitable size and Forni lilllis. li i'lle de.- scribed means the.- several pistons 'are positively driven in both direetions` the strain on the shat't is distributed` and the links are eti'ectively guided. liubrieating oil may he placed in considerable quantity in the lower Section of .the hollow' body whereb)Y the links and eceentrieswill be kept. lulu'irated.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is,
l. Thel combination otl a hollow base romprisiug upper and lower sel'iaruhle seetiuus having each a plurality ot' projecting interiorly'grooved parts, a plurality ot e \'linders nlounted in a longitudinal row on the upper section, each above af separate groove, a pis lcate by separate valved ports.
2. The combination of a hollow base coniprising upper and lower separable sections having each four registering projecting iuteriorlygrooved parts, tour cylinders nlounted in a. longitudinal row on the upper. ser
tion; one above each glooved part., a pistou -and rod for each cylinder, a link eonneeted to each piston rod and adapted to more in and be guided by the eorrespolnling groove, a power shaft; extending lm-lgitudinally in said base, spaced eccentries on said shatt, one
.in eachof said links t'or reriprcwating its p1ston, and a common pipe or passage. with which the cylinders'eonununieato b v separate va-lved ports.
In testimony whereof,'I have signed this specification in the present-.e of two subscribing witnesses.
' GEORGE W. KELLOGG. Witnesses v CARL S. POTTER, THos. G. MoMA'I-roN.
