CRANK-SHAFT BEARING AND CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,949, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed December 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may OOILCBTVL.
Be it known that I, STEPHEN F. Bvnnns,
of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Crank-Shaft Bearings and Connections, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combination of two pistons with the connecting-rod of asteaniengine or other equivalent source of power; and it consists in an arrangement of the crank shaft bearings and connections whereby the strains are well equalized, and at the same time only two crank-pins are required.
The invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a general vertical perspective view; Fig. 2, a view partly in crosssection through the cylinders carrying piston and connecting rods.
A represents, generally, the bedplate of the machine, upon which is placed a horizontal engine, B, provided with connecting-rod H.
At right angles to the connecting-rod H are located three pillows-blocks, E, F, and G. The inverted cylinders M and J are supported between the three vertical frames a, b, and c. The frames at and I) are attached to cylinder M, and aid in carrying, through the bed-plate of the machine, the pillow-blocks F and G. The main shaft D is supported in pillowbloeks E and F and carries the fly-wheel G. A crank is attached to the end. of the shaft D, the other crank being supported in the pillow blocks G,which carry a short shaft connected with the crank-wheel B.
Attached to the wrist-pin P on the crankwheel R is the connecting-rod N, driving the 0 piston-rod K.
Attached to the crank-pin of crank S is the connecting-rod 0, driving the piston-rod L of the cylinder M. These cylinders areinverted vertically, whereby an oil-packing may be carried upon the top of the pistons. By this arrangement the strains are well equalized and the machine is made compact, while at the same time only two crank-pins are re quired.
It will be obvious that the connecting-rod H could be connected to the wrist-pin P, if
desired, as shown in dotted lines 00, Fig. 2;
but I prefer the arrangement shown.
The pillow-block E may be arranged on the other side of the pillow-block G, as shown in dotted lines 7 Fig. 2, without altering thenature of the invention or combination, making the crank R a double crank, and supporting the other bearingin the pillow-block. In that case the fly-wheel G will be left overhanging.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Thecoinbination of the horizontal engine the shaft D, in connection with the pillowblock F, with the engine B, connected by rod H to crank S, substantially as described.
STEPHEN F. BYRNES.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Datent No. 308,949, granted December 9, 1884, upon the application of Stephen F. Byrnes, of Brooklyn, New York, for an improvement in Crank-Shaft Bearings and Connections, the name of the ztssigniee was Written and printed Mixer & Byrnes; that said name should have been written and printed Miwer Bg rnes Ice Machine Compam and that the proper correction has been made in the files and records pertaining to the case in the Patent Office, and should be read in the Letters Patent to make it conform thereto.
Signed, oountersigned, and sealed this 23d day of December, A. D. 1884.
