LOCKING DEVICE FOR MILK-CAN COVERS.

My invention relates to improvements in locking devices for milk can covers, the object of the invention being to provide a simple inexpensive device which may be positioned around the neck of a milk can, which will fit cans of various sizes, which will securely lock the cover in closed position and may be quickly removed and replaced as desired.

lVhile my improvements are illustrated in connection with a milk can and cover, and this use is set forth in the description hereinafter, the invention is in no wise limited to that use, but may be employed as a lock for bottle stoppers or other analogous purposes.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointedout in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements in connection with a milk can and cover. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the device. Fig. 3, is a view in horizontal section through the neck of the can.

My improved lock comprises a neck band 5, and a strap 6. The neck band 5 consists preferably of three members, each member comprising a strip of sheet metal, the adj acent ends of said members being bent upon themselves as shown at 7, and extend through metal loops 8, and while I have illustrated three of these sections, it is to be understood that as many sections may be employed as desired.

One end section is provided with a plurality of staples 9, and the other end section with a plurality of slots 10 to receive the staples 9. By providing a plurality of staples and slots, the band may be positioned tightly around the neck of the can and then caught over the staples. If the neck of the canis unusually large, only the end staple will be engaged, so that by this means necks of various sizes may be utilized with my improved band.

The intermediate section of the band is stamped forming two bearings 11, in which a wire bail 12 is pivotally mounted. The

strap 6 above referred to, is also of sheet metal, and has one end bent around the bail and secured upon itself as illustrated at 13, the other end of the strap 6 is bent upon itself and secured to a loop 14. To this loop 14 one or more flat links 15, such as ordinarily employed in fiat chains, is connected, and the openings in said links must be of a size to receive one of the staples 9, and be secured in position by an ordinary pad lock 16 positioned in the staple.

In operation, the band 5 is located around the neck of the can with the slotted end 10 engaging over the staples 9, strap 6 is then carried across the top of the cover and may, if desired, be positioned through the handle 4. The strap is drawn .tight, and one of the links 15 caught over one of the staples 9, and when secured thereon by the pad lock 16, the cover will be most efiectually locked on the can, and can only be removed by an authorized person with the proper key.

My improvements are adapted for use with bottles or with other receptacles having a suflicient enlargement or flange at the open end, behind which. the band 5 may be secured, and the invention is not limited to the application illustrated.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a hand, one end of said band having an opening therein, a staple on the other end of said band to receive said opening, a strap connected to an intermediate portion of said band, a link connected to the free end of said strap and adapted to be positioned on the staple and a locking device in the staple locking all of said parts to gether, substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described, comprlsing a band, and a strapat right angles thereto, said band comprising a plurality of sections, metal loops between the sections, the ends of said sections bent around said loops and upon themselves, staples located adjacent one end of said band, the other end of said band'having openings to receive the staples, a bail having hinged connection With an intermediate section of said band, a metal strap secured to one end of said bail, staple engaging links on the free end of said strap and a locking device in the staple looking all of said parts together, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a milk can, a flaring neck on the can, and a cover on the neck, of a neck band located around the neck of the can, one end of said band having a slot therein, a staple on the other end of said band to enter said slot, a pivoted bail on said band opposite the staple, a strap secured to said bail and positioned over said cover, a link on the free end of said strap to engage said staple, and a pad lock in said staple looking all of said parts together, substantially as described.
