the connection of knobs to spindles and the arrangement of the same relative to lock and latch casings; and its novelty and utility will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure. 1 is a vertical section taken through a door and a lock or latch casing equipped with one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail section showing the arrangement of the coupling member on the angular portion of the spindle and in the bifurcation of one knob. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the bearing device for preventing rattling or shaking of the knobs and spindle while rendering easy the turning thereof. Fig. l is a detail elevation showing a modified bearing device adapted to be used in lieu of those shown in Figs. 1, and 3.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 thereof: A is a door.
B is a lock or latch casing arranged in the door.
C is a knob, preferably the outer knob of the door.
D is an escutcheon surrounding the knob C and adapted to be connected to the outer side of the door in the conventional or any other suitable manner, and E is a spindle connected to the knob C by the pin (i or any other suitable means. The said spindle E comprises a portion 7), of angular form in cross-section, adapted to extend through the casing, and a reduced and threaded end portion 0.
F is a knob arranged at the opposite side of the door, with reference to the knob C, and having a threaded bore or socket (Z to receive the threaded end portion 0' of the shank, and also having a bifurcated inner end portion 0. Exteriorly a portion at least of the knob F is circular in cross-section and is arranged and adapted to freely turn in an escutcheon G. The latter is designed to be connected to the inner side of the door in any suitable manner and is preferably provided with a bushing f. i
H is a coupling member comprised in my improvements, and I is the bearing device also forming part of the invention. The coupling member H may be of bent, stamped or other suitable metal, and is shaped to receive the circular portion of the knob F, and is provided with a forward portion adapted to slide forwardly and rea-rwardly in the bifurcation of the knob.
In the said forward portion of the coupling member is formed an aperture 9 of angular form in cross-section, and when the coupling member is moved forwardly the said aperture is designed to receive the angular portion I) of the spindle E, whereupon boththe coupling member and the knob F will be clutched to the spindle so as to turn therewith.
In assembling the parts of my improvement, the knob C and the spindle E are arranged as shown, relative to the door A and the casing B, and the coupling member H, the escutcheon G and the knob F are positioned in the order named, and the knob F is turned up on the threaded portion of the spindle to an extent suitable to the thickness of the lock; the coupling member H then turning with the knob F but loose around the reduced portion of the spindle. hen the knob F is positioned as desired on the spindle, the escutcheon G is moved to and connected with the inner side of the door, and said escutcheon obviously moves before it the coupling member H which then receives in its aperture 9 the angular portion 7) of the spindle. \Vith this done it will be observed that the knob F, the coupling member H and the spindle E will turn as one piece; also, that the knob F cannot be turned off the spindle until after the escutcheon G is disconnected from the door, and said escutcheon G and the coupling member H are moved toward the left in Fig. l.
The inner end of the knob C affords an abutment, and between the said abutment and the adjacent wall of the casing B is interposed a. bearing device. This bearing device which is lettered I is preferably in the form of a saucershaped spring washer having an angular aperture 2' which causes it to turn with the shank and also having peripheral notches calculated to increase its resiliency. The convex side of said washer is opposed to and engages the adjacent wall of the casing B and hence it will be manifest that the washer in addition to reventing rattling or shaking of the knobs and spindle will aiford an easy bearing for the knobs and spindle and adapt the same to turn with but a minimum amount of friction.
In F ig. 4 is shown a bearing device I adapted to be used in lieu of the bearing device I. Said modified bearing device 1 comprises a washer 'm, adapted to turn with and move sidewise on the angular portion is of the knob C, and a spring at interposed between the washer and the opposed abutment afforded by the large portion of the knob.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that all of the disclosed embodiments of my invention are simple and inexpensive in construction, are capable of quick and easy installation, and are well adapted to with stand the rough usage to which looks and latches are ordinarily subjected.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a knob and spindle connection, the combination of a spindle threaded at one end and having a portion of angular form in cross-section, a knob connected with said spindle and adapted to be arranged at one side of a door, a knob adapted to be arranged at the opposite side of the door and having a threaded bore to receive the threaded end of the spindle and also having a bifurcation in its inner end, an escutcheon, and a coupling member loosely receiving and movable inward and outward on the last named knob and having a diametrical portion disposed in the bifurcation-of the knob and an angular aperture in said diametrical portion adapted to receive the angular portion of the spindle; said coupling member being retained in its working position by the escutcheon.
