oreste.
To all 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY MILLER', a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State of `New York, have invented certain new and useful linprovenients in Cigar Advertising and Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
vThis invention relates to devices for advif'ertising and lighting cigars; and the object thereoll is to provide an` improved device of this class which may be placed on a desk, counter or any other suitable support, and which is simple in construction and operation, and which may also be made to serve asI a cigar cutter; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of' my improved cigar advertising and lighting' device, Fig. 2 a central transverse vertical section, Fig. 3 a transverse vertiealfsection approximately on the line SW3 Qi Fig. l, Fig. el. a from or plan view of a rotatable cylinder whichllforms a part of the device, Fig. 5 a front view of the device complete, F ig. 6 an ond view thereof, and F ig. 7 a plainview of an electric heating device which l. employ.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a box or vcase a comprising a bottom member a2, back member o3 and end memberso4 and a, and hinged at the front ot the bottom member a2' at a is a combined front and top cover member al having attaching lugs a8 by means of which 'it may be secured to the back o3 by screws as shown, but the particular form and construction of the box or case i forms no part of my invention, and. said box or case may have any preferred and suitable shape'and form or construction,
Secured to the inner face of the end niember o5 is a stationary pivot shaft b, and secured to the inner face of the end member o4 is a hollow pivot block b2, and mounted between the pivot shaft o and the pivot block b2 is a drum c comprising heads c? Specification of Letters Patent.

Upon the inner end of the pivot block b2 is mounted anV electric incandescent lamp o4, and bet-'Ween the base c5 of the lamp c4 and the correspending head c2 of the drum c is a ring c6 which together with a shoulder on the pivot block Z22 prevents longitudinal motion of the drum c.
Mounted loosely upon the pivot shaft I) isa ratchet arm d having a long arm member Z2 terminating in a weight d3 and a short arm member Z4 arranged to form a right angle as shown in Fig. l and terminating in a pin d5; and the pin d5 operates in a slot al carried in the upper end of a solenoid plunger d? as plainly shown in Fig. 3, and the solenoid. plunger al7 works vertically in a vertical solenoid da, and the long arm d2 of the ratchet arm l carries a pawl d pivoted at d10 to the armd, and the pawl Z9 engages the teeth of a ratchetwheel d secured to the outer face of one of the drum heads c2 of the drum c as shown in Fig, 3,
land a tension spring 012 secured to the ratchet arm al and the pawl el holds the pawl in engagement with the ratchet wheel du.
Mounted on the inner face of the end member c4 of the box o by means of a screw e is a cigar cutting device c2 having a blade member 63 which lies vflat against the inner face of the end a4 of the box and extends outwardly through the front a7 of the box through a suitable slot @terminating in a thumb handle c5, and the-blade member e3 is normally held upwardly by a tension spring c6 as shown in Fig. 2 and is adapted to operate in connection with an aperture e7 in the end a4 of the box to cut ofi the end of a cigar when the latter is inserted into the aperture e7 as will be understood.
Mounted approximately centrally of the front a7 of the box is a cigar lighting device f comprising a main outer 'Casin y f2 having an outwardly directed mouth f3 e osed at the back by a perforated plate f4; and mounted within the main casin f2 immediately behind the plate j" is an e ectric heating device f5 shown in side elevation in Fig. 2 and in plan in Fig. 7, and comprising a base plate f preferably made ot lava, and a coil or coils et tine conducting wire mounted thereon; and the lava base plate f land the perforated plate f4 are parallel and the coil or coils f7 lie between the lava base plate f6 and the perforated plate fr, and the terminal wires of the coil or coils f7 pass backwardly through the lava plate f" and downwardly through a tubular extension fs of the main casing f2, Vand the form of construction of the main casing f of the cigar lighting device f and the parts therein may be varied as desired, and my invention is not limited to the particular form shown.
In the operation of the cigar lighting device f, the end of a cigar is placed in the mout-h f3 and against the perforated plate f4 and electric current passing through the coil or coils f7 creates heat which ignites the end of the cigar.
In the bottom of the box a and adjacent to the end member a5 and front al thereof is a switch device g comprising a hollow support g2 having a horizontal member g3 on which is mounted a switch arm g4 pivoted at gi and operating in connection with a contact block g and normally7 held open as shown in F ig. l by a tension spring gl, and the switch arm g carries a usher gs pivoted at g9 and passing forwar ly through the front a7 of the box vthrough a suitable aperture glo, and when the pusher g8 is pushed inwardly from without by the thumb or otherwise the arm g4 contacts with the Contact block g6 and an electric connection is made block gG and the pvot point g5 as will be understood.
The back a3 of the box a is provided with an aperture and insulating bushing It therein through which electric circuit wires h2 are adapted to pass into the box, and the circuit wires h2 are preferably connectedat the outside of the box to an attaching plu h3, and. after passing into the box one o the circuit wiresh* goes to the solenoid is and from there by a Wire 11,5 to the contact block g6 of the switch, and the other circuit Wire L goes to the lamp c'i by way of the hollow pivot block b2 as plainly shown in Fig. l, andv from there by a Wire 71.7 into the tubular extension f8 of the cigar lighting device f into and through the coil or coils f7 therein and out from the cigar lighting device f to the blade g* of the switch g by way of a wire its, and in this way it will be seen that the solenoid d8 and lamp c* and cigar lighting device f and switch g are all in series and that by closing the switch g the three devices just mentioned will be supplied with an electric current.
The bars c3 of the drum o are provided with supplemental bars c7 of the same size and shape as the bars c, and secured thereon by screws c, and each pair of bars c and 0l thus forms a longitudinal clamping device c", and each adjacent pair of clamping devices c is adapted to receive and hold a between the matten and it will be seen that when the lamp c* is energized and the interior of the drum illuminated, the sign or advertisement on' the cards 01 will stand out clearly to view.
ln the form of construction shown, the combination frontand top. member a7 of the box is provided with a sloping section a9 which is provided with a longitudinal openr ing am closed by a plate of glass a and surrounded by a suitable frame or bead au; and the general appearance of thel window thus formed is shown at als in Fig. 5.
The operation of ,my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof. With the parts in their normal positions, the switch gis open and consequently the lamp 0*, solenoid als and cigar lighting device f are not actuated and the ratchet arm d occupies the position shown in Fig. 3 due to the gravity'action of the weight Z? and the plunger Z7 is at the upper end of its stroke as shown. When the operator uses the machine, he irst inserts' the end of his cigar in the aperture c7 in the end a* of the box and depresses the blade member e3 of the cutting device e by means of the thumb handle e5 ani thereby cuts oif the end of the cigar. The operator then inserts the end of his cigar in the cigar lighting devicer'as above described and presses the pusher gs and as above described the latter operation will close the switch g and actuatel the lighter f and at the same time the lamp e* and the solenoid d8, and as the coil or coils f7 are being heated and are i niting the cigar, the solenoid "015 will pull `o'wnwardly on the plunger gT audiwill rotate the ratchet arm Z and the pawl with it around the longitudinal axis of the drum c and the pawl (i9 will engage and carry with it the ratchet du and the drum c, and one of the cards bearing an advertisement or sign will be brought immediately under and parallel with the window a3 and the lamp 'c4 will brilliantly illuminate said sign and it will be seen bythe operator through the window a and command his attention. When the cigar has been ignited and .the operator releases the pressure on the pusher g8 the switch g is opened and the apparatus again made inoperative and the lamp c4 goes out, and the solenoid plunger i7 returns to the position shown in Fig. 3.
- lt will be understood that my invention is I not limited to tr. particular form of mechanisln shown tor operating the drum step by Step, no1l to` the form of drum, switch or cigar cutter as Shown, und various changes in the forms of construction shown, and changes in the arrangement of the parts of my apparatus may be made, Within the scope of the appended claim, Without departingfroin the Spirit of my invention or sacrific-Q ing ils adifantagc und while l have shown the electric devices to be` all connected in Series, it will be undersstood that a. system of parallel connections or series parallel as deeiredunay be used.
