No 878,082. PATENTED FEB. 4, 1908. T. P. MOODY.
COMBINED CIGAR TIP CUTTER AND LIGHTER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 20, 1907- @FIG' Wilowaoeo WM- R15 srsns o., WASHINGTON, a. c.
THOMAS P. MOODY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CIGAR TIP-CUTTERtAND LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
Application filed July 20. 1907. I Serial No- 384.785-
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs P. MOODY, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combined Cigar Tip- Cutters and Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined cigar tip cutter and lighter, and embodies in its construction a sliding knife adapted to clip the tip of the cigar, and at the same time operate electrical contact pieces to produce a spark which ignites a wick or burner of a lamp, whereby the cigar may be lighted. And
. when the knife is released a spring retracts the same and extinguishes the flame.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the appa ratus, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view, with the end wall removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are details in plan and section of the cutting and lighting devices.
Referring specifically to the drawings, A is a box or casing in which are placed electric battery cells B, and an induction or spark coil C, with proper electrical connecting wires D, as usual. One side of the circuit is connected to a top plate E, and the other extends vertically through the middle of a tube or cup F, ending a little below the top thereof.
The plate E is secured to the top board of the case A, and it has on its under side strips forming grooves e, in which slide the edges of a plate G having a cutting edge at one end and having at the other end. a raised portion H which is arranged to slide over the top of the tube F, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The tube F is held in and extends through a hole in the plate E and projects above the top of the same. The sliding plate G has 011 its under side a depending pin 9 which is received between the forks it of a lever I which is pivoted at and extends through a slot k in the side of the box A. The lever I is normally retracted by a spring K, and in retracted position the lid or cover H extends over and closes the top of the tube or cup F. This cup is filled with a sponge or similar material saturated with alcohol.
On its under side near the end, the cover H is provided with a contact finger m which wipes over the top of the wire (1 in the tube, and this action causes a spark which ignites the alcohol. The knife G operates under a hole a into which the tip of the cigar may be placed. Then the cigar is so placed in said hole and the cutter advanced by operation of the lever I, as shown in Fig. 3, the tip is clipped off and falls into the box, and at the same time the finger m wipes over the end of the wire (1 and produces a spark which ignites the alcohol, and the cigar may be lighted at the ensuing flame. hen the lever I is released the spring K pulls back the slide and causes the cover H to close the tube and extinguish the flame.
I claim:
1. A cigar cutter and lighter comprising a box having a hole in the top, a holder for inflammable material adjacent the same, a combined knife and cover operating to cut a cigar tip at the hole and to open and close the holder, and electrical devices operated by said knife to light said material when the holder is opened.
2. A cigar cutter and lighter having a movable knife to cut the tip, a holder for inflammable material adjacent the same, a movable cover for said holder, connected to said knife and operating therewith to open the holder when the knife is advanced and to close the same when the knife is retracted,
and electrical means to light the said material when the holder is opened.
3. A cigar cutter and lighter comprising a box having a hole in the top, a holder for inflammable material adjacent the same and having an electrical contact piece therein, and a sliding knife mounted on the top of the box and having a knife at one end engaged to cut a cigar. tip at said hole and having at the other end a cover arranged to slide on and off the holder, to open or close the same, said cover having a contact piece which wipes over the said contact piece to produce a spark, and a source of electricity connected to said contact pieces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS P. MOODY.
