To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that l, Anxonn N. ROTH, citizen of the United States, residing at Me- Call, in the parish of Ascension and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Match-Safes and Cigar-Gutters, of which the following 'is a specification.

My present invention pertains to match safes of the single-delivery type; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous device hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my novel device, with part of the lever in elevation. Fig. :2 is a plan of the device, with part of the overhanging guard broken away. Fi 3 is a detail cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. f is a detail elevation of the grooved and notched slide, taken at a right angle to Fig. 1.

A is the base of the device, and B is the match holder. The said holder is supported by fixed uprights and at the inner sides of said uprights channel-guides D are provided, which channel-guides are alined With a. slot (4 in the bottom. of the holder. In one side of its upper portion the holder B provided with a filling-opening b that IS normally closed by a suitably secured door 0, and on the opposite side of its upper portion the holder is provided with a receiver (Z for the delivered matches. It will. also be noted by comparison of Figs. and 2 that in its uppermost portion the holder B 1s provided with an opening 6 above which rests a guard f, and partly across which extend a plurality of resilient lingers These fingers g are fixed at one end to the holder top and their opposite ends are free. and hence it will be manifest that when a match is raised through the opening 0. the fingers will give upward and enable the match to pass and then will assume a position below the match, whereupon the match will roll over the fingers and holder top and into the receiver (Z where it will remain until removed by the party who operates the device. The guard f prevents undue upward movement of the ejected match and assures the same passing as ceiver 1i.

E is the slide for ejecting the matches one by one from the holder. The said slide is grooved at h to adapt it to receive only one match, and is notched at "J to accommodate the resilient fingers g and facilitate the operation thereof. The slide is carried by a plate F, and this latter is adapted to be moved vertically in the before-mentioned channel-guides D and in grooves G, formed in the ends of the holder B and alined with the said channel-guides.

Thus it will be manifest that when the rear arm of the lever J is depressed, the forward arm thereof will be raised and will raise the plate F and slide E with it, and will effect the discharge of :1

It will also be readily understood that downward movementof the forward armof lever J will be attended by a return of the slide E to its normal position shown in Fig. 1. I would also have it understood here that when deemed expedient the slide B may be moved downward until its upper side is flush with the bottom of the holder B in order to enable said slide to raise the last match from the holder bottom, but this I have regarded as unnecessary to illustrate.

The rear arm of the lever J is curved upward as shown, and is provided at its upper end with a head K. This head K provided in its upper side with an opening m to receive the end of a cigar, and is provided in its under side with an opening a for the discharge of the ends cut from cigars. It will also be understood by comparison of Figs. 1 and 3 that the under side of the rear arm of lever J is grooved at and that the said groove 7) communicates at its upper end with grooves r formed in the side walls of the before-mentioned opening a in the head K. The said grooves 7') and 1' receive and hold a plate spring Bl, which is fixed at s to the upright H and has its upper end portion shaped as shown and provided with a sharp edge if to enable it to cut the ends oll cigars that are introduced through the opening mand are utilized to depress the rear arm of the lever J.

It will be manifest from the foregoing that when the tip or mouth end of a cigar is placed in the opening in, and the cigar is pressed downward, the rear arm of the lever J will be swung downward, whereupon the sharp edge if of the spring M will cut the tip from the cigar, this being due to the fact. that downward movement of the headK will be attended by movement of the opening on relative to the'sharp edge t of the spring. lVhen the rear arm of the lever J is depressed as stated, the spring M will be placed under tension, and in consequence when. pressure is removed from the head K the spring will return the lever J to andyieldingly holdit in the position shown in. Fig. 1. When the rear arm of the lever J isdepressed as stated, a match will obviously be discharged from the holder B, and when the said rear arm is raised by the spring M the match-ejecting slide E will be returned to its normal position shown in Fig. 1.
