'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABIJAH BENJAMIN BENNETT, OF OPELIKA,
ALABAMA.
Application filed April 30, 1906.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Serial No. 314,582.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABIJAH BENJAMIN BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Opelika, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cigar-Cutter and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined cigar cutters and match safes, and more particularly to that type of device wherein the actuation of the cigar cutter serves to automatically eject a match from the match safe and position the same for ignition.
The object of the present invention is the provision in a device of this character of im proved means actuated through the actuation of the cigar cutter for ejecting a single match from the match safe and delivering the same into position so as to be ignited when withdrawn by the user.
A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means for effecting the ignition of the match.
Other objects of the invention will be ap parent from the detailed description hereinafter, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation with parts broken away.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings A designates a box-like casing in the upper portion of which is the match receptacle A having the inclined bottom a and in the lower part of which is positioned a drawer A adapted to receive the severed ends of the cigars, access being had to said drawer by a door A in the back of thecasing. The front wall of the casingis provided with an elongated aperture 0/ therein, through which the ends of the cigars are designed to be introduced. Secured to the exterior of the front wall of the casing adjacent the opening a therein is a fixed plate B having in one side thereof an inwardly extending recessed portion 6 provided with a beveled edge. Positioned at one side of the fixed plate B is a laterally movable plate B, which is normally held in yieldable engagement with the adjacent edge of the fixed plate B l by means of a suitable spring I). The plate B is provided with an inwardly extending recess b in one edge thereof, which is similar in form to the recess 1) in the fixed plate B and is designed to cooperate therewith to form which the tip of the cigar is introduced. From this construction, it will be apparent that various sized cigars may be inserted through the aperture a in the casing and that the cigar will be firmly held by the plates B and B during the severance of its tip by the cutter, to be hereinafter described.
C designates the cutter, which is in the form of a plate which is pivotally secured to the inner side of the front wall of the casing and is movable across the aperture 0/ therein.
D designates an actuating lever which is fulcrumed in any suitable manner in one of the side walls of the casing and the forward end of which projects within the casing and is positioned slightly in rear of the front wall thereof. The outer end of the lever D is connected with the free end of the cutter C by means of a downwardly extending link (1.
E designates a plate, which is secured to the inner side of that portion of the front wall of the casing, which forms apart of the match safe, the lower end of the bottom of said match safe terminating short of said plate so as toleave a slight space therebetween.
F designates a vertically movable ejector plate which is designed to occupy the space between the bottom of the match safe and the plate E. The ejector plate F is provided with a plurality of pins f projecting from the side thereof, which are designed to engage grooves f formed in the side walls of the casing. The front wall of the casing terminates short of the top thereof and the grooves f in the sides of the casing extend upwardly beyond the top of the front wall and are curved forwardly, for a purpose which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth. The upper portion of the ejector plate F is made flexible so that it may conform to the configuration of the groove f 2 during its upward travel. The upper edge of the ejector plate is slightly dished so as to form a seat for a single match. A link d connects the extreme outer end of the actuating lever D with the ejector plate.
Secured to the upper portion of the front a substantially circular opening through .Which is adjustably secured in the wall of the casing A is a box or tray G, which is designed to receive a match after the same has been thrown over the front wall of the casing by the ejector plate F, a portion of the front and side walls of said box being cut away to afford the withdrawal of the match by the user, aswill be hereinafterset forth.
H designates a striking roughened upper surface, which is designed to occupy one end of the box or tray G. The
plate H is provided at its forward edge with a plurality of pins or projections h, which are designed to loosely engage apertures formed in the front wall of the casing A and the plate is yieldably supported by a leaf spring I which is secured to the bottom of the box or tray G and bears against the under side thereof. The plate His introduced into the box or casing G through a slot g formed in the front wall thereof and accidental displacement thereof is prevented by a screw 9 bottom of the box or casing G and extends upwardly into proximity to the under side of the strik ing plate II. From this construction it will be apparent when the screw 9 is properly adjusted the striking plate H cannot be depressed a sufficient amount to permit its withdrawal through the slot g, but that if it is desired to replace the plate for any reason the screw 9 can be lowered and the plate readily withdrawn. K designates a supple mental striking plate, which is su ported in the box or tray G directly above the striking plate H, the forward end of said striking late K being upturned slightly to permit the head of the match to be readily drawn between the two plates. The striking plate K is provided with an upwardly extending portion is, which has a pin and slot connection with the front wall of the box or tray G to permit the vertical movement of said striking plate. The striking plate K is normally held in yieldable engagement with the striking late H by means of a coil spring 7c, the lbwer end of which bears on the upper side of said striking plate and the upper end of which is secured to a-suitable cross bar 7c in the box or tray G. L designates a block, which is supported upon the bottom of the box or tray G and is preferably inclined downwardly towards the front thereof.
To prevent the matches in the match receptacle from crowding in the lower end thereof, I provide a partition therein, which extends into' proximity to the bottom thereof.
Access to the match safe is obtained by a suitable lid in the top of the casing, which also covers the box or tray G.
The weight of the cutter C, the ejector plate F, and the links connecting them to the end of the lever D is such that the handle of said lever will normally be maintained by gravity in its raised position, the upward plate having amovement of said handle being limited by the contact of the lower end of the lever with the side wall. of the casing.
From the above construction, it will be apparent that if the tip of a cigar be inserted in the aperture a of the casing and the handle of the lever D depressed, the cigar tip will be severed and simultaneously the ejector plate 'will lift a match and throw the same over the top of the front wall of the casing. The match will fall to the bottom'of the box or tray G, the head thereof falling on the striking plate H and the opposite end thereof on the block L. If new the user grasps the end of the match and draws the same through the cut-away portion of the box or tray G, the head thereof will be drawn between the striking plates H and K and ignited.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes may be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
