To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALTER PARKER, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Neola, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved F ence-Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rl`his invention relates to fence posts, and more particularly to the combination with a suitable fence post of a socket, embedded in the post or otherwise carried thereby, and a removable wire holder having a part adapted to be received by the socket.
The object of the invention is to 'provide a simple, inexpensive and durable fence post for wire fences and the like, which has associated therewith means for removably attaching the fence wire so that it can be easily mounted in position and can as easily be taken down, and by means of which barbed wire or any other suitable wire can be securely held in position against accidental displacement.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be morey elevation of a part of a fence post; Fig. 3

Before proceeding to a more detailed eX planation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that any suitable wire or the like can be mounted in position upon the fence post by means of the wire-holding device, and can be so held that if desired it can be easily taken down without the employment of special tools or without injur Specification of Letters Patent.

The post may be fashioned from concrete, wood or any other suitable material adapted for the purpose.
While I prefer to fashion the socket of stamped sheet metal, as is shown in the accompanying drawings, I do not wish to limit myself to this or to others of the constructive details, but desire to emphasize that these details can be varied in accordance with special conditions and individual preference.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown, for example, in Figs. 1 and 2, a fence post 10 fashioned from concrete and of the usual tapered form. In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a fence post having an inner body or core 11 incased in a layer of conc-rete 12.
I employ a socket 18 embedded in the post and of tapered form. The socket is preferably fashioned from a sheet metal blank 14 of trapezoidal form and having an extension 15. The body of the blank has crease lines or lines of plicature 16, so that it can be conveniently folded into a hollow member of angular cross section, shown most clearly in Fig. 5. The extension 15 is folded upon itself to form the closed end 17 of the socket; the socket has stops or shoulders 1.8 at the extremities of the sides adjacent to the openings formed by the folded section 17. A part 19 of the blank overlaps in the formed socket to strengthen the same.
I employ a wire holder proper 20, fashioned from an elongated spring member bent upon itself to form an eye 2l, and normally resiliently spaced shanks Qi'. The wire is received by the eye 21 in the customary manner. The Shanks at the ends have toes 23, which, when the member is in position in its socket, engage the stops 1S to hold the member in place. The shanks tend resiliently to spread, so that as the member is forced into the socket the toes automatically engage the stops 18.
It will be understood that the sockets are necessarily embedded with the closed ends at the inside, so that the open ends lie iiush with the outside of the post to permit the insertion of the wire-holding members. The closed end of the socket prevents the concrete from entering when the posts are being formed, the openings adjacent to the stoos 1S being too small to permit any niaterial quantity of concrete to enter.
It Will be seen that t-he Wire holder can easily be Withdrawn from the socket by 'forcing the shanks toward each other to disengage the toes from the stops. Air ordinary pair 0f pliers can be used to grip the Shanks at the projecting ends, t-hat is, adj acent to the eye, to force them together.
rIhe modified form of socket shown in Fig. 7 is fashioned from a substantially rectangular and elongated blank 24 having near its middle, pairs of incisions 25 extending inwardly froin the edges and folded on lines of plicature 26 to form ythe body 27 of the socket, the edges of which overlap as is shown most clearly in Fig. 7. The part 28 of the blankfbetvveen the incisions 25 forms the closed end 29 of the socket and has laterally extending extremities 5G formed by the material between the incisions of each pair. Adjacent to the openings formed yat tlie'closed ends of the socket areshoulders 31 which serve, like the shoulders 18, to yengage the toes 23 vof the wire holder. The projecting extremities it Will be understood, serve to hold the socket f in place When it is embedded Within a post.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. in embinaaon, a @soket adapted a) be carried by a fence/post, and a. Wire holder removably associated with said socket, said socket being formed from a blank of sheet material, said blank having at one end an extension, folded to form an arched closure for one end of said socket and leaving lateral openings.
2. In combination, a socket adapted to be carried lby a fence post, and a Wire holder removably associated with said socket, said socket being formed from a. trapezoidal blank folded to form a hollow body and having an vintegral extension folded upon itself to form a closed end of said body, said body at the extremity adjacent to said eX- tension having edges constituting stops, for engaging said Wire holder.
3. A socket for a fence Wire fastener, formed from a metal blank folded upon itself to form tivo parallel sides, said sides having vtheir opposite edges overlapped, and one of said sides having an extension forming a lpartially closed end for said socket.
