Be it known that I, NIKOLAUS A. NISSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Attachments for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to harness and refers particularly to an attachment to be applied to collars which are adapted to be worn especially by horses.

An object of this invention is to provide a collar with an attachment to prevent the chafing of the withers of a horse incident to the movement of the animal when in harness.

The present invention further provides a suitable support for collars which is provided with yieldable contact faces to engage the neck of the animal, and to which support the upper ends of the collar are adjustable, and loosely secured, so as to admit of the vibration of the collar without chafing the neck of the animal and detaching the body of the support.

The invention has for a still further ob ject the provision of a support of this nature which is strong, which is durable and one which is yieldable, the formation of the support being simple, so that it can be easily assembled and manufactured, as well as being adaptable to collars of common formation without the necessity of applying extra devices thereto.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar having the improved attachment applied to the same. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the upper end of the collar disclosing the attachment applied thereto and partly in sect-ion, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the attachment.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all. the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a collar which is of common formation and which is terminated at its upper ends in spaced relation to admit of the positioning of the collar about the neck of the animal and to adapt the same to the improved support.

The support is formed of a yoke 11 which is constructed from a strip of spring metal and which is provided with suitable apertures arranged in registered relation through the arms of the yoke 11. A suitable bolt 12 is transversely positioned through the yoke 11, in the aforesaid apertures, having the head 13 thereof engaged against the outer face of one of the arms, while a clamping nut 1 1 is disposed about the opposite and threaded extremity of the bolt 12 against the outer face of the opposite arm of the yoke. The adjusting bolt 12 is employed for the purpose of regulating the distance between the extremities of the yoke.

Upon the ends of the yoke 11 plates 15 are disposed which are riveted or otherwise secured to the arms of the yoke and extend considerably beyond the opposite edges and the ends of the same. The inner faces of the plates 15 are provided with pads 16, the same being secured to the plates 15 by the extension of the rivets 17 through the pads 16 and the supporting arms of the yoke 11. The arms of the yoke 11 are provided at their inner ends with links 18 which are limited in movement upon the arms by the adjusting bolt 12. The links 18 are thus confined to the central portion of the yoke 11 and are adapted to extend outwardly about the arms of the yoke and downwardly to support depending straps 19. The upper extremities of the collar 10 are engaged against the outer faces of the arms of the yoke 11 and the plates 15.

The straps 19 extend downwardly against the outer sides of the collar 10 and are adjustably secured in adjusted relation there on by the provision of buckles 20 engaged with the straps l9.

Disposed at the opposite edges and at the upper portion of the yoke 11 are a pair of studs 20 which project upwardly and carry therebetween a bar 21. The bar 21 is spaced upwardly from the upper face of the yoke 11 to admit of the passage of the upper hame strap, as is disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In the operation of the support the collar 10 is first positioned about the neck of the animal when the improved support is engaged between the upper ends of the collar 10 and at the opposite sides of the withers of the horse. The bolt 12 is adjusted to engage the pad 16 against the sides of the neck of the animal with slight tension so as to prevent the jarring or Vibration of the pads against the animal when working. The straps 19 are secured at their lower ends in the buckles 20 so as to loosely support the collar 10 thereon. It will be observed that as the animal moves the collar 10 is permit ted to move slightly, but that the collar will move independently of the support by reason of the flexible connections of the collar with the support, through the medium of the links 18 and the straps 19.

It will be observed that the adjusting bolt 12 enables the correct application of the support on the animal and thereby afiords a device of this character which is adapted for general use.

Vhen the collar 10 is thus adjusted the hames are secured in position by engaging the upper hame strap between the yoke and the bar 21 to prevent the lateral displacement of the hame strap by the engagement of the opposite edges thereof against the studs 20.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a collar, a yoke arranged within the upper open end of said collar and spaced upwardly from the neck of the animal, an adjusting bolt transversely disposed through said yoke to regulate the distance between the free ends of the yoke,

plates carried upon the free ends of the yoke to engage against the opposite sides of the neck of an animal, pads-carried by said plates against the inner faces, and straps arranged between the upper end of said yoke and the opposite sides of said collars.

A supportincluding a yoke, a brace carried by the yoke to strengthen the same and to regulate the distance between the free ends thereof, pads carried upon the free ends of said yoke for engagement against the opposite sides of the neck of the animal, and straps depending from the yoke to support a collar, said straps being connected to the ends of said brace.

3. A support including a yoke, a bolt transversely and adjustably positioned through the arms of the yoke to arch the same upwardly above the neck of the animal, pads secured to the free ends of the yoke for engagement against the sides of the neck of the animal, links passed through the upper end of the yoke and resting upon said brace, and straps depending from said links for supporting a collar.
