APPLICATION FILED JULY 10,1909.

FFTQ.
HENRY H. SCHLUETER, OF CANASTDTA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent,
WRENCH.
Patented Get. 18, 1910.
Application filed July 10, 1909. Serial No. 506,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. SOI-ILUETER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canastota, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches and like tools.
The object of my invention is to provide a wrench structure having a double-tree bolt for a handle, especially adapted to be used with heavy road wagons, but for purpose of utility, I show the same as provided with several adjunctive devices so constructed that the wrench and attached parts may be used as a handy emergency tool, serving as a wrench, screw driver, hammer or as a wire twister so that in case of an accidental break, the tool can be used in making the necessary preliminary repairs.
The structure of the invention, specifically stated, comprises a sheet metal wrench head and an attached handle-forming bolt member, such parts being provided with the several adjunctive devices, to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a top view of a wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 shows an end view. Fig. l shows an enlarged detached detail of the bar. Fig. 5 shows a central sectional view of the hammer head.
In connection with heavy road and freight wagons it is highly desirable to have a handy tool, arranged to be used in tightening any loose nuts, and making superficial repairs in the case of accidental breaking of parts of the wagon.
In my present invention I provide such a tool which serves primarily as a double tree bolt which may be instantly removed and used as a tool.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral l designates the flatbase of a sheet metal wrench head preferably made of steel, having two of its opposite edges 2 and 3, bent in like directions and at right angles to the base 1, these bent edges being held in parallel spaced relation and being so positioned as to form wrench aws for engaging the burs upon the wagon axles. Each of these edges 2 and 3 is provided with a square wrench seat marked 16 and 17 in the drawings, said wrench seats being of different sizes.
Stamped outward from the base 1, are the two similar ear forming members 4: and 5 which form an integral part of the base plate, these ears extending in a direction opposite to that in which the edges 2 and 3 extend. These ears 1 and 5 are further held in parallel spaced relation and at right angles to the bent edges 2 and 3, each ear having a round opening 7 the lowermost point of which coincides with the base 1 as is disclosed in Fig. 3. This base 1 along one of its unbent edges is provided with the wing forming portion (5 which is rebent to form a sleeve, as it were, to receive the bent end of the handle forming member as used in connection with this wrench head.
In the drawings the numeral 9 designates the threaded stem and 12 a nut adapted to be carried thereby said stem forming the bolt as well as the handle of the wrench, this member 9 preferably being made of wrought iron having its lower end 10 shaped to serve as a screw driver, the opposite end of this member 9 being extended at right angles. The right angular extended portion is of such length that when secured to the wrench head 1, this end portion 11 will extend beyond the base 1 a suitable distance, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. This handle forming member t) is inserted and held within the ear opening 7 in such a manner that the same rests upon and against the base 1, the angular extension 11 being held within the sleeve 6, as clearly disclosed.
In connection with my wrench I employ a hammer head, which is preferably constructed of cast metal, said hammer head comprising the portion 25 forming the head proper, said head having the lengthwise p0- sitioned bore 26, which is flared at its outer end, as shown at 27. Vithin this bore 26 is friction'ally held, the bar extension 11, the endof which is riveted into the flared opening, in such a manner that the hammer head is held against the edge of the base 1, so as -to withstand pressure of a blow thereon.
This latter construction is clearly shown in Fig. l and in connection with the head 25 I employ the inturned claws 28, adapted to serve as a tack puller or the like.
At asuitable point I provide the base 1 with the two openings 8, these openings being arranged to receive the ends of a suitable tie wire so that the ends may be twisted in making repairs about a wagon.
The attachment of the handle forming bar 9 to the wrench forming head 1 may be effected in any suitable workmanlike manner.
The tool is simple and inexpensive in construction, durable and efiicient in operation, and the nut adjustments can be made with ease, accuracy and despatch.
As my invention relates more particularly to the wrench structure it must be understood that in devices of this character the attached parts, including the screw driver, wire twister, tack puller etc., may be incidentally shown without departing from the spirit of the invention although I place no particular novelty therein.
And having thus described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In combination, a sheet metal wrench head comprising a flat base having two of its opposite edges bent in like direction at right angles to said base and held in parallel spaced relation, each of said edges having a square wrench seat entering from the edge of said seat of different sizes, said base having two semicircular ear portions bent outwardly in a direction opposite to said bent edges, said ears being held in parallel spaced relation at right angles to said bent edges each having a round opening, said base along one of its unbent edges having a wing portion bent to form a sleeve and being positioned adjacent to one of said bent edges, and a bar having one end bent at right angles and held upon said base within said ear openings, the bent bar portion being held within said sleeve, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. SCHLUETER.
