The invention to be hereinafter described relates to looms, and more partieularly to the type known as -tilling replenisliing looms.
As vvell known by those skilled in the art., looms ot' the above gen-eral type are designed to etlfeetreplenishnient of the tillinr when that in a shuttle has become exhausted or broken anth` in order that the replenishing mechanism mayproperly discharge its fano tion, it is neeessary that the shuttle be properly loeated in the shuttle-box.

Since the filling carrier to be transferred to the shuttle occupies a definite position with respeet to the length of the shuttle box, it follows that the shuttle to which such oarrier is to be transferred should be definitely and properly positioned in its box at the moment of transfer. Mounted in suitable bearings 9 seeured to the leoni .traine` Fig. l, is the traiisverse rod 1t) of usual character to which is secured thc linger l1, said rod 10 being normally under the intiuence of a spring 12, Fig. 1, one end 13 of which is secured to a tixed part of the loom frame and the other end 1l of which overlies a controller 15 secured by a set screw 16 to said transverse rod, the construction being such that the spring 12 normally holds the rod in position with the ngerll depressed. Then the filling fails for any reason, the transverse rod 10 is turned contraclockwise, looking from the right,Fig.1,by the usual indicating mechanism, well understood by those skilled in the art and consequently unnecessary to describe, with the result that the linger 11 is raised for a purpose that will presently appear.
The shuttle box 17 may be of usual construction, having preferably an openV bottom for the passage, of illing carriers discharged from the shuttle and a binder 18, or it may be variously modified.
Projecting from the lay beam 1SX i's a lug 1t) which, it' desired, may be formed as a part ot' a plate or bracket 20, Figs. 3 and 4, secured to said beam. Extending from said lug 19 is a supporting stud 21 having mounted on 'the lower portion thereof the gate or arm 22, which is normally under the intluence of .a sprin' 23, one end of which, Fig. 1, is secured to a part 2t fixed to the lay beam and the other end 25 to the gate or arm 22, the construction being such that the spring 23 normally maintains the gate or arm 22 in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 with said gate or arm extending across the passage between the .stud 21 and the downwardly extending arm 2G.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, the gate or arm 22 is formed with an extended portion 27 to which is jointed at 28 one end ot' a link 2t), Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the other end ot said link being connected with a shuttle positioner 31. y
Extending below the shuttle box is a bracket 32 having the angularly disposed slots 33 and 34 in which move the pins ti() and 35 secured to the pcsitioner 3l. In the, present. form of the invention the slot. 33 is shown as straight and substantially vertical and the slot 34 is curved, but it will be understood that variations may be made in these respects, the construction being such that upon movement o'r' the gate or arm 22 about it axis, the shuttle positioner may be actuated to engage the shuttle and then have its shuttle. engaging portion travel in the path of shuttle movement, and as the gate or arln 22 returns to normal position the shuttle positioner mav move to itsinitial position with the shuttle engaging portion out ot' the.

The slot lift 1n the present form ot' the` invention has an end portion t forming a dcpressed seat for the pin30 of thc shuttle positioner, so that when the positioner is in normal position, as 4vindicated in Fig. 3, the shuttle engaging portion 3T thereof will be below the path of movement of the shuttle, but when the shuttle positioner is moved in order to position a shuttle in the box, the initial action of the positionerwill canse the shuttle engaging end 37 to rise into a recess in the shuttle,fpreferably the shuttle chamber, and engage the Wall thereof, and continued movement of the position'er will cause the end 37 to travel in the path of shuttle movement; and when the positioner returns to initial position -prior to the picking movement, the shuttle engaging portion 37 will be positively moved out ofthe path of the shuttle.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the shuttle positiener is shown as extending upward and when this form or disposition of parts is employed the upper portion of the shuttle positioner is inclined, as indicated, to permit the ready discharge of the ejected lling carrier, though obviously this would not be necessary if thepositioner were disposed above the shuttle box.
As hereinbefore noted, the shuttle engaging end of the shuttle positioner may engage the end Wall ofthe shuttle chamber,
thus obviating any special construction of' shuttle. In the present illustration 4the shuttle S, which may be of the usual construction employed in filling replenishing looms or otherwise, has the end Wall 38 of the usual shuttle chamber 40 provided with a wear piece 39 adapted to be engaged by the upper portion of the shuttle ositioner, thoifgh this may be omitted if desn'ed. Obviously also the pins 30 and 35 which travel in the slots of the bracket 32 may be provided With rolls or rotary sleeves to decrease wear and frictional resistance.

From the construction described and its r various modied forms which may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, it will be seen that under normal working conditions of the loom the finger 11 will remain depressed, so that as the lay beats up it will be below the path of movement ot the gate or arm 22 which will maintain its normal position, as indicated in Fig. 1, and hold the shuttle positioner in its initial position. Should the lilling break or become cx# hausted, the transverse rod 10 will be turned by the usual indicating mechanism and raise the nger 11 into the path ot' movement of the gate or arm 22, and the replenishing mechanism will likewise be yet l'or making the transfer, as already described and as well understood b v those .skilled in the art.

As the lay reaches front position` and prior to the action of the transferrer, the shuttle positioner will have properly positioned the` shuttle for the reception of the fresh supply of filling, and as the. lay goes back the positioner will be moved to initial position with its end out of the path of shuttle movement prior to the picking action.
Having reference to Fig. l, it will be noted that the binder 1S has bearing thereagainst the usual binder finger which controls the position of the dagger 5l, Figs. 1 and 3. the construction being such that should the shuttle fail to enter theshnttle box sufliciently far to actuate the binder, or` should it rebound to a position such that the binder is not moved back by the shuttle, then the binder finger 50 will fail to lift the dagger and the loom will knock off as the lay moves up, in a manner well understood It sometimes happens, however, that the shuttle comes to rest at. the end of its pick in such position that it may have moved the binder sutliciently to prevent loom stoppage, and yet be so far out of the box that the shuttle positioning devices heretofore employed fail to discharge their shuttlepositioning function, in which case, should the filling replenishing means operate,damageis liable to occur. The present invention, however, obviates this objectionable condition and provides means whereby, should the shuttle enter the box far enough to actuate the binder aud prevent the loom knocking off, the shuttle will be moved into proper position t'or the .action of the replenishing mechanism. and should the shuttle not enter the box sufficiently to actuate the binder then the loom will knock off and stop.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a lay, a shuttle box having an o )ening for the discharge of a filling carrier therethrough. filling replenishing mechanism, a shuttle positioner. and means for causing the shuttle positiouer to enter the bobbin chamber of the shuttle and position the shuttle in the shuttle box.

10. ln a'loom, the combination of a lay, a shuttle box, a swinging shuttle positioner, and means for causing the end of the positioner to enter the bobbin chamber of the shuttle and move'an improperly positioned huttle into proper position in the shuttle 11. 1n a loom, the combination of a lay, a shuttle box, a swinging shuttle positioner, and means for causing the ond ot' the positioner to enter the bobbin chamber of the shuttleand then move in the direction of shuttle movement to engage and move an improperly positioned shuttle into proper position in the-shuttle box.
12. In a loom, the combination of a lay and shuttle box, a shuttle positioner, and means for moving the shuttle engaging portion of said positioner into the bobbin cha'mber of the shuttle and then moving said portion in a substantially straight, line to position a shuttle in the shuttle b'ox.

In a loom, the combination ot a lay and shuttle box, a shuttle positioner disposed below the shuttle box, and means for moving the shuttle engaging portion ot' said positioner upward into the path of shuttle movement and then moving said portion in a substantially straight line to position a shuttle in the shuttle box and returning;V
the posi-tiener to initial position with the shuttle engaging portion out of the path of shuttle movement prior to the picking` action.
14. ln a loom, the combination ot' a lay. a shuttle box, a positioner for engagingv and moving, an improperly positioned shuttle, a swinging gate, means `for swinging' said gate. connections between the swinging; gato and positioner, and means for directimg,- the positioner to cause its shuttle engaging' portion lto more into the path of the shuttle and then in a straight line to position the shuttle in the shuttle box.
