Worcester, in the county of Torcester and Replenishing Looms, of which the following is a specification. e
My invention relates to weft replenishing looms, and particularlyto that class of weft replenishixig looms having a stationary magazine or hopper for bobbins or filling carriers at one end of the loom, and drop or change shuttle boxes at the other end of the loom, the magazine having a plurality of compartin a vertical plane, for sets of bobbins preferably of different color or character, corresponding to the number of shuttle boxes, one4 set for each shuttle box, and also having a filling detecting mechanism to detect practical or .substantial exhaustion of filling'in the active shuttle, and to put into operation transferring mechanism to transfer 'a bobbin of the desired color or character from the magazine into the shuttle, to take the place of the practically' exhausted bobbin, and also having selecting means, connectedI with and controlled by the movement 'of the leased from the magazine and transferred into the active slinttle.
In the class of looms above referred to, the filling detecting mechanism has ordinarily been located on the drop or change shuttle box end of the loom, and provision made for the vertical movement of the shuttle boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide` in the class of looms referred to, a filling detecting mechanism, preferably a mechanical filling detecting mechanism, located at the magazine end of the loom, to detect. practical o1' substantial exhaustion of ,filling in the active shuttle when it is at the magazine end of the loom, and to permit of said shuttle being pickedto the drop shuttle box end of the loom, and then returned to the ma azine endof the loom, and have a neboibin transferred into said shuttle, if there is no change of shuttle boxes at theopposite end of the loom. In case there is a i change of shuttle boxes at the opposite end of the loom, then the transfer of the bobbin from the magazine into the shuttle having the practically or' substantially exhausted bobbin, is delayed until said shuttle becomes again the active shuttle and is picked 'to the magazine end of the loom, when said transfer takes place.
In my im rovements, the release of a bobbin fromtie magazine, to be'v transferred into the active shuttle, incase of the practical or substantial exhaustion of the bobbin in said shuttle, is done in two operations'. In case the filling detector indicates the practical exhaustion of the'bobbin in 'the active shuttle, the supporting mechanism of thebobbins, in the compartment from which allow the lowest of the set to drop down in the magazine, and be held in its dropped position above the dischargin end of the magazine, until the shuttle, w ich 'caused the indication of the drop ing, down of said bobbin, returns again to t e magazine end of the loom when the mechanism which supports said bobbin is again operated, allowing the bobbin to drop or move down to the discharging end of the magazine and be transferred into the active shuttle.
By the construction of the bobbin holding and releasing mechanism above described, it is not necessary that the bobbin` be immediately transferred into the active shuttle, after the indication of the practical exhaustion of the filling in said shuttle, so that after the active shuttle has been picked from the magazine end to the/.dischargin end of the loom there may be a change of t e shuttle boxes, and a new shuttle brought into play, and this new shuttle may have the llthe bobbin is to be released, is operated to fing therein practically exhausted, and cause the operation of the filling detecting mechanism to indicate for a chan of filling for said shuttle, and then said s uttle be returned to the other end of the loom, and another change of the shuttle boxes takes place, and the same operation may take lace 1n connection with the other two shutt c boxes, in case four shuttle boxes are used, so that every one of the four shuttlesA for the four shuttle boxes mayA have the filling therein pr'acticall exhausted, and cause t e o ration of the filling chan lng mechanism to'indicate for a change of fil ing, but such change of filling' y will not take place until the shuttle is again picked to the magazine end of the loom,
when the proper bobbin, corresponding to the bobbin in the shuttle, will be transferred. In conection with my improvements above referred to, I preferably use a thread cutter, and mechanism for` operating the same, combined with'the selecting andtransferring mechanism, and operated by the selecting mechanism on the transfer of a bobbin from the magazine into the shuttle, to cut the filling thread on lthe bobbin discharged from the shuttle.
I Yhave only shown in the drawings detached portions of a weft replenishing loom of the class referredto, and particularly the magazine end of the loom, with my improvements a'pplied thereto, suflicient to enable those-skilled in the art to understand the construction and operation thereof. I have shown in the drawings in this instance, my
improvements combined with a magazine provided with means for holding the bobbins in the compartments thereof, and for releasing the bobbin; said holding and releasing means, connected with and operated by the movementl of Athe drop or change shuttle boxes at the other end of the loom, are of substantially the same construction and operation as the means shown in the pending application for U. S. Letters Patent No. 298,939.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a detached part of Aone end of a loom breast beam, and a part of a stationary magazine, and parts connected therewith, with m'y improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view of some of the parts-shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow a, same figure. The end of the lay, and part of a shuttle, not shown in Fig. 1, is shown in this figure, but the magazine and some-parts connected therewith, shown in Fig. 1, are not shown in this figure. lIn the accompanying drawings, 1 isa detached portion lof a loom side, 2 the breast beam, 3 the lay beam having a stationary" shuttlebox on one end, for a shuttle 5 carrying a bobbin 6. On the end of the breast beam 2 is secured a stationary stand 7, which has lsecured thereto the inner end 8 of the magazine, which inV this instance has four vertically extending compartments or guide-ways 8 for the heads of the bobbins 6, which are arranged in four sets or series, one set for each compartment, and drop down by gravity to the lower discharging end 8 of the magazine. Each compartment-or guideway 8 is provided at its lower end with mechanism for supporting the set of bobbins therein, and also for releasing the lowest bobbin in each set, preparatory to its passage to the discharging end 8 ofthe magazine, to be transferred into the shuttle. In this instance said holding and releasing mechanism consists of a rocking lever or cradle 9, pivotally mounted at the lower part of the magazine. 'lhe transferrer arm 10 carries a transferrer 11, and has a downward extension 10 thereon, which carries a dagger 12, which is adapted to be moved in the path of the bunter 13 on the lay beam 3, in the usual way.
All of the above mentioned parts may be of the usual and well known construction, and particularly described in said application, Serial No. 298,939.
I will now describeO my improvements, and first the filling detecting mechanism, which as above stated, is located on the magazine end of the loom, and is in this instance shown as a mechanical filling detecting mechanism.
On the end of the breast beam 2 is secured a stand 14, which has an inwardly extending arm 14', upon the inner end of which is a b'oss or hub 14, forming/a support for a longitudinally moving filling feeler ordetector 15, which consists in this instance of a flattened blade, adapted to enter, through'an opening in the shuttle, and engage the bobbin or filling therein, see Fig. 2. 'lhe feeler 15 has an elongated slot or opening 15 therein, through which extends a stud 16, carried on the arm 14 of the stand 14. The stud 16 acts to hold the .feeler 15 in its proper position relative to the opening in the shuttle, and a washer 17 on said stud -acts to hold the -feeler 15 in its proper vertical position. The outer end of the feeler 15 is in this instance connected with a second contraction spring 21, attached at one end to the arm 14 on the lstand 14, and at its ther end to the arm 19 on the lever 19,

A helically coiled contraction spring 34 is attached at one end to the lstud 23, and at its other end to the stud 33, and acts to move the arm 32111 the slot 14 toward'the--lever 24, as shown in Fig. The outer end of the arm 32 has a. projection 32 thereon,
' which has a notch therein, which is adapted to receive the pointed end 19 on the lever 19,'see Fig. 4.

Said longitudinally moving rod .44, has the hub 45 on a lever 45, see Fig. 7, loosely mounted thereon, which lever carries a pin 46, to which is pivotally connected the upper end of a connector 47 to a cam lever, not shown, operatedy by a cam, not shown, preferably on the bottom Shaft of the loom, not shown. The hub 45 is prevented from lhaving a longitudinal movement on the rod 44 by the bearings 7 on the stand 7, -see F ig:"7.
The two longitudinally moving rods 43 and 44 are connected at one end by a plate 48, see Fig. 5, which in this instance is made .bifurcated at each end, to receive a collar 49 fast on the'rod 43, and a collar 5() fast on the rod 44. The plate 48 has upon its inner end two lugs or ears 48, see Fig. 7, between which extends a side extension 51 on one arm of an angle ever 51, the hub 51 of which is loosely mounted on a stud 52 carried on the stand 7. The other yarm ofthe angle lever 51 is adjustably connected, through a slot and bolt connectlon, with the lower end ofa connector 53. The rod or connector 53 is connected, through intermediate connections not shown in this instance with the drop boxes, not shown, on the opposite end of the loom, so thatthe raising and lowering of said shuttle boxes, controlled by a pattern mechanism, not shown, will communi- 115 cate, through the intermediate connections,

reciprocating movement to both rods 43 and 44 to cause them to be moved longitudinally, according to the movement of the shuttle boxes, and 1n case of four shuttle boxes, to cause said rods to have four different posi-y tions longitudinally, corresponding to what is shown and described in said application, Serial No. 298,939, above referred to. Each' rod 43 and 44 has fast thereon, to move longitudinally therewith, and to have av rocking motion therewith, a pair of operat- 130 llOy lever 42 will communicate, through the ex` tension 54', an up and down -movementto the fingers 54. The two fingers 55 on the upper rod44, also have a side extension 55' thereon,"which"extends parallel to the upper rod 44 and is adapted to extend into a notch or recess in the lever 45, to have a reciproeating movement in said notch or recess.
The movement o f the lever^45, through its connecting mechanism, will consequently communicate a rocking movement to the two ingers55.
Arranged on the inner side of the inner end plate of the magazine, are four vertically moving bars 56, one'for each compartment i or guide-way of the magazine. These bars are loosely supported in guides or bearings 8"', see Fig. 6, .to have an up and down movement. The lower end of each bar 56 has in this instance a swivel pin 9 attached thereto, which has an opening therethrough -to loosely receive the end of a pin 9"', which is secured` at its other end to the extenson 9" on the rocking support 9, see Figs. 5, and 6. A helically coiled expansion spring 9a encircles the pin 9"', and bears at one end against the swivel pin 9', and at its other end against theendof the extension 9", on the support 9, and acts to yieldingly lock-or hold said support 9 in its two positions.
The vertical movement of the bars 56 communicates 'to the rocking supports 9 a rockving movement, according to the vertical movement of said bars. On each bar 56 is a projection 56', adapted to extend in the path of the fingers 54 and 55, see-Fig. 6. The upward movement of any one of the sliding bars 56, will cause the cradle or supv ort 9 connected therewith, to have a parta rotation, allowing a bobbin todrop lnto the cradle, as shown by broken lines at the left in Fig. 3. On the upper forked end of .each
vertically sliding bar 56 is pivotally mount- -ed a weighted latch 57, see Fig. 8, and when a bar 56 1s in its raised-position, the weight# ed end 57 of the latch 57 is'free to movethc latch into its raised position, shown in Fig. 8, and by broken lines in Fig. l. In this po sition, the latch extends over a transverse bar 58, see Fig. 5, having its hub 58' fast on a rock shaft 59, loosely mounted in bearings von the stand 7, see F ig, 5. On the downward movement yof a vertically moving bar, 56, by the operation of one of the upper fingers 54, the support 9 is rocked or moved to release the bobbin, and allow it 'to drop to the discharging end' of thejmagazine to bar 58 on the rock shaft 59. On sald shaft -59 is fast the hub 60' of an arm 60 carrying a pin 60" on which is mounted the hub 61' of a pin 61, which at its lower end extends through ahole in the head of a swivel 1n .62 on the frame, see Fig. 3. A 'helicallly coiled expansion spring 62' encircles the pin 61, and acts to yieldingly holdthe arm 60 and parts connected therewith in their two opposite positions, as shown in Figs. 8,and 9. On the rock shaft 59 is fast a hub 63' of an armY 63, see Fig. 5, which carries a pin 64, which is connected through a connector 65, with one arm of an angle lever 6, pivoted on a stud 67, see Fig. 3. The -other arm 66' of the angle lever 66, extends in the path of, and is adapted to enga e an arm 12' on the dagger 12, to move sai dagger and raise it into position to engage the bunter 13, 'to operate the transferrer arm 11 toI transfer the dropped bobbin, in the usual way. The ,engagement of the bunter 13 with the dagger 12, returns the angle lever 66 into itsopposite, normal position, and through the connector 65 moves the arm 63 and rocks the shaft 59, and moves the bar 58 into its normal raised position, shown in Fig. 6.
Inconnection with my improvements, I may use a thread cutting mechanism, connected with and operated by the transferrer mechanism, on the transfer of a bobbin, to i thereby. In this instance I provide the rock shaft 59 with an outwardly and downwardly extending arm 68, having pivotally attached to its outer end a downwardly extending bar 69, see Fig. 8, the lower end of which has a slot 69' therein into which extends a pin 7 0' on lone arm of an angle lever 70, pivoted at 71 on a projection on the stand 7. The other end of the angle lever 70 is connected by arod or connector 72 with the upper end of a lever 73, which is pivotally mounted on a Vstud 74 on the breast beam 2, and has the downwardly extending end 73', which is adapted to be brought into line with an actuating rod 7 of theithread cutting mechanism ofthe type shown in my pendlng application, Serial No. 368,781. A spring actuated pin 76 is adapted to enter into one of two openings or recesses 7 3" in the lever 73, to hold it in its two positions, shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 8.
When a bobbin is going to be transferred, as above described, the bar 58, as above stated, is moved downwardly. The downward movement of said bar will raise the arm 68 and'the bar 69, and through the engagement of the pin 70" on the angle lever 130 7o, with the lower @mi of the Sia e9" in the bar 69, as the bar 69 is raised the angle lever 70 will be moved',4 and the cutting mechan-l ism operated. The connector 47 for' rocking the fingers 55, has pivotally mountedthereon at 76a, the-lower end of a hook lever 77,
which has an engaging hook end 77', adapted to extend over andengage the pin 70', at predetermined times and carrying a pin 77,
which is adapted to engage an inclined or cam shapedv surface 69, on the inner lower edge of the bar 69, see Fig. 8. The raising of the bar 69, through the engagement o\f the inclined surface 69 thereon with the pin 77 on the hook lever 77, will move away 'said hook to disengage it from the pin 70 to the hook 77, and at yits other` end to the lower end of the connector 47, will act to movesaid hook inwardly at its hook end, to extendA over the pin 70 on the angle' lever 70, as shownin Fig. 8, and the downward t movementof the connector 47 and the hook 77, will move down the plate 69, and through connections to the thread cutting mechanism, move the same to its`- inoperative position vshown by full linesin. Fig. 8.
From the above description inl connection with the drawings, the operation of my improvements in weft replenishing looms will be readily understood by those skilled in the hrt, and is as follows:-

It will thus be seen that by meansof my improvements, the rocking support 9 for each compartment has two positive movements, one to allow a bobbin to move toward the discharging end of the magazine -and be retained there, and the other to allow the bobbin to move to' the discharging end of thel magazine. If there is a change of the shuttle boxes at the opposite end of the loom between these two movements of the rocking support, then the second movement of the rocklng support is held up and does not take place until the shuttle, having a bobbin with filling of a color or character thereon corresponding to the bobbin moved down and held by the rocking support, is again picked to the magazine end of the loom.
The operation of the thread cuttin mechanism will be readilyunderstood f om the above description in connection with the drawings: On the operation of the mechanism'above described, to transfer a bobbin from the magazine-into a shuttle, the rocking of the shaft 59 will raise 'the arm 68 and the bar 69, through thc engagement of the pin with the lower end of the slot 69 1n' the bar 69, will rock the angle lever 7O ,and `through connector 72 will -move the ylever 73, from the Aposition shown by full lines to the position 'shown by brokenvlines in Fig. 8, and into the path of the rod 75, to cause the operation of the thread bcutting mechanism, as fully described in my pending application, Serial No. /368,781, above re- `ferred to. The raising of the bar k69 causes the inclined surface 69"thereon to engage the pin 77 on the hook arm`77, and move the hook arm 77 away from the pin 7 0', as shown in Fig. 9. 5. In a weft replenishing loom, a magaf zine for bobbins, having a plurality of compartments, a bobbin support for each ,compartment, adapted to be moved in two directions, a filling detector, connections from said bobbin support to said filling detector, to niove said support in one direction, and separate connections, controlled by a pattern mechanism, to move said support in the other direction, to allow a bobbin to move into a position to be transferred into a shuttle.
6. Ina weft replenishing loom, a stationary magazine, having a plurality of compartments for bobbins, and supports for said bobbins, a filling detector, means controlled by' said filling detector to move said supports in one direction, a dagger arranged to be operated by a bunter on the lay, and said lbunter and lay, combined with connections. from said bobbin supports to said dagger, to cause the said dagger to be moved into the path of the said bunter when any one of the bobbin supports are moved to re- I lease a bobbin therefrom. i

In a weft replenishing loom, having a stationary magazine with a plurality of compartments, the combination with a transferrer mechanism, of devices for ejecting a bobbin from any compartment, a support for said ejected bobbin under the transferrer mechanism, of mechanism for operating the' filling thread cutting mechanism when said transferring mechanism is operated, on the transfer of said ejected bobbin from the magazine into a shuttle, to sever the thread of the ejected bobbin.

In a weft replenishing loom having a stationaryrmagazine with a plurality of compartments, the combination with the transerring mechanism,- of devices for ejecting a bobbin from any compartment, a support for said ejected bobbin under the transfer- .ring mechanism, of mechanism for operating the filling thread cutting mechanism when said transferring mechanism is operated, on the transfer of said ejected bobbin from the magazine into a shuttle, to sever the thread of the ejected bobbin, and on one pick thereafter to sever the thread of the transferred bobbin.

In a magazine for a weft replenishing loom, Va plurality of compartments, and a bobbin support for each compartment, a sliding bar connected to each support, rods having a sliding and oscillating motion, means, under the control of a pattern mechanism, for sliding said rods, connections from one of said rods to a filling detector, and said detecto1',connections from the other rod to a rotatable cam, and said cam, a device on one of said rods for operating the said sliding bars in one direct-ion, and a device on the other rod for operating said sliding bars in the opposite direction.
10. In a magazine for a weft replenishing loom, a rocking bobbin vsupport .for each compartment, a sliding bar connected to .each support, and a spring lock between each of the said supports and one of the slidingbars.
11. In a magazine for a weft replenlshing loom, having a plurality of bobbin compartments, a rocking support for each of said compartments, a sliding bar connected to each support, said sliding bars having'latches fulcrulned thereon, a transfer mechanism, a
latch connected therewith, a bunter on the lay, and a -device connected with the last named latch, land adapted to be o erated by any one of the latches Von said s iding bar,
when the said sliding bar moved in one direction.

14. In a weft' replenishing loom, drop zine having a plurality of compartments, a bobbin support foreach compartment, two
rods having fingers thereon, and adapted to copcrate with the bobbin support-s, devices under the control of a pattern mechanism, to give said rods a lateral motion 1n umson the filling'in an active shuttle, when the said shuttle is at the magazine end of the loom, means vconnected with said detector, to indicateffor a change of' bobbins in thc active shuttle on the practical exhaustion of the filling thereon, and separate means 'to cause v a change of filling when lthe said shuttle is again picked to the maga-zine end of the loom. y c

In a Weftreplemshmg loom, a magasaid -devices corresponding in number to the bobbin compartments, to give a primary indication on the practical exhaustion of the filling in a shuttlev at the magazine end of the loom, combined with devices under control of pattern mechanism, to cause a fresh supply of filling, corresponding to that in the active shuttle, to move into position, to be transferred into said shuttle, when yit is again picked to the magazine end of the loom.

In a weft replenishing loom, a stationary ma azine having a plurality of compartments or 'cops or bobbins, a lay, a filling detector at the magazine end of the loom, a plurality of devices, corresponding in number to the magazine compartments, connected With the said detector, to ca use axprimary `indication to liemade, through the filling detector, when a filling in any shuttle at the magazine end of the loom has been eX- ha-usted to a pre-determined amount, combined 'with meansto' automatically transfer a. bobbin or cop. from a compartment corresponding to the active shuttle into said shuttle, ii'hen itis again picked yto the magazine end of the loom.
18. In a weft replenishing loom, a magazine for bobbins or cops having a plurality of compartments, a lay, a support for the bobbins or cops in each of the said compartments, a filling'detector at the magazine end of the loom, devices connected with said supports and under control of'said detector, to cause a primary indication, and allow a bobbin or cop having filling thereon corresponding to that in theactive shuttle, to move toward a position to be transferred, combined with devices under control of pattern mechanism to cause said bobbin or cop to be transferred into the shuttle, when said shuttle is again picked to the magazine end of the loom.
