Be it known that I, HERBERT CHADWIC'K, a subject of King George V of Great, Britain, residing at Blackburn, in the county of 5 Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weft Stop-Motions for Weft-Replenishing Looms, of which the following is a specification.'
This invention relates to automatic looms of the feeler type wherein the runnin filling is replenished prior to complete ex iaustion and shuttle feeler isemployed generally provided with a device to catch and cut the old or spent filling between the cloth andv the shuttle when filling replenishn'lent is effected. In these looms it has been customary to locate the weft fork at the end of the loom opposite to that having the filling magazine or battery mounted thereon, the means for catching the old thread on filling replenishment taking place, provided at the magazine end of the loom, causing the portion of thread extending from the thread catcher or holder to the selvage of the fabric or temple thread cutter to assume such a position as to prevent the application of the weft fork at the same side of the loom as the filling hopper or battery. y
it is advantageous to have the weft fork operate at the magazine side of the loom, and the object of my invention is to provide means whereby the weft fork can be mounted between the edge of the fabric and the shuttle box under or adjacent the filling magazine, and operate to detect weft absence and stop the loom without interfer ing with the usual operation of the shuttle factor and thread catcher and parter, or being in the path of the weft thread extend ing to such parter on weft replenishment taking place previous to being severed thereby and also the filling severed at the selvage edge of thefabric by theftemple thread cutter.
In order to lessenthe parts on the loom I propose, in the preferred embodiment of my invention, to stop theloom' on weft failure by means of the warp stop motion, that is to say, I combine the weft fork motion' with the warp stop motion so that detection of absence of weft by the Weft fork will'act through the warp stop motion to stop the loom. v

Referring to the drawing, the weft fork 1 i is, for the purposes of my invention, pivotally carried by a rod or bar 2 which is fast to one end of a short spindle 3 mounted in bearings in a bracket at supported on the breast beam 5 at the magazine end of the loom, 5 representing a portion of the inner end of thomagazinc mounted in the usual way on the breast beam. East on the opposite end of the spindle 3, is an arm or lever 6 having projecting therefrom a pin 7 which enters a slot 8 in a link 9 pivotally attached at one end to the usual shuttle feeler 10. This shuttle feeler, as is well known, normally occupies an inoperative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but, on. indication of substantial exhaustion of filling, is moved, by the rocking of the usual rock shaft- (not shown) by which the indications of the fceler are communicated to the transfer mechanism, into the position shown at Fig. 3, so that as the lay comes forward, it will be engaged by.
the shuttle if the latter be improperly boxed and forced back, and through well known mechanism (not shown) prevent actuation of the transfer mechanism. As the shuttle feeler is moved into operative position, it causes the arm or lever 6, through the link 9 to be raised. The raising of said arm or lever 6 through the spindle 3 causes the bar or rod 2 to be tilted upwardly at its rear end, to carry the Weft fork up'clear of the portion of weft e'xtendingfrom the selvage of the fabric-to the exhaustedbobbin.
The shuttle feeler 10 usually has combined therewith means, comprising a fixed -cutting blade 11 and a movable cutting 'blade 12, the latteroperatcd by an abutment on the lay, to cut the end of filling extending from the selvage of the fabric to the exhausted bobbin, a thread catcher '13 holding said end of filling, after it has been position before the lay comes to the front center and the link 9 causes the weft fork to be moved into its inoperative position during the early part of such movement so that when the lay arrives at front center, the end of filling can pass without obstruction between the jaws of the cutting blades.
. -When the shuttle feeler moves back to in- 14 as usual, which, according operative position after filling replenishment has been effected, the weft fork is lowcred again into operative position, but by reason of the positions of the pivotal center of'the link 9 and of the pin 7, the weft fork is not lowered until the end of filling has been carried back to such a position that when the weft fork descends the filling is behind the fork and is allowed to remain without interference until such time as it is cut at the selvage by the temple thread cutter.
The tail end of the weft fork has a hook to the arrangement shown, is adapted to be engaged, when the la beats up and the fork has not been tilted y. engagement with the filling, by the hooked upper end of a weft hammer lever 15- carried by a suitablepivoted 'on a stud 16 fixed art on the loom, the lower end of the said ever 15 being connected by a rod or connection 17 and a lever arm 18 with the shaft 19 carrying the vibrator 20 of the usual. warp stop motion.

The warp stop motion may be of the usual form, such for example as shownin the patent to Stone, No. 996,297, granted June 27, 1911. weft fork 1 drops down and engages the hooked upper end of the lever 15, the latter cannot be moved by the lever arm 18 and connection 17 and the motion of the shaft 19 is arrested, thus causing the loom to be stopped in the same manner as if a warp thread had broken. Instead, however, of combiningthe weft fork motion with the warp stop motion in this manner, the usual weft stop mechanism may be employed.
In place of being controlled by the shuttle feeler as described the movement of the. weft fork from operative to inoperative position at the'time of weft replenishment may be ef- I fectedby any suitable means connected with or controlled by the operation of the weft replenishing mechanism of the loom.
The details of construction and arrangement of the improvements may be var-led without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a Weft replenishing loom a weft fork and a thread catcher and parter alllocated at the magazine end of the loom and means to move the said weft fork, on filling replenishment being called for, to a position out of the path of the filling thread extending from the selvage of the fabric to the exhausted shuttle to enable said filling thread to be dealt with by the thread catcher and cutter.
2. In a weft replenishing loom a weft fork, a shuttle feeler, and a thread catching and parting means all located at the magazine end of the loom, and means operated by or through the shuttle feeler to move the said weft fork, on filling replenishment being called for, to a position out of the path of the filling thread extending from the selvage of the fabric to the exhausted shuttle to enable said filling thread to be dealt with by the thread catchlng and parting means.
3. In a weft replenishing loom a weft fork, a pivoted support therefor, a shuttle feeler movable into and out of feeling position, a thread catching and parting means, all of the said elements bein magazine end of the loom, a ink connecting the shuttle feeler and the said pivoted su port whereby upon the movement of t io shuttle feeler intofeeling position the weft fork support will be swung on its pivot to move the said weft fork to a position out of the path of the filling thread extending from the selvage of the fabric to the exhausted shuttle to enable said filling thread to be dealt with by the thread catching and parting means.
