JOSEPH W. PUTNAM, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1910.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910. Serial No. 546,592.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States ,of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes, and more particularly to improvements in the styleof folding box shown in my Patent No. 940,941, dated November 23, 1909, and its object is to provide a box that will fold downmore compactly when out of use; that is less likely to become broken where the paper is folded; to provide a box better adapted .for shelf use, and to provide the same with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in v the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
igure 1 is a perspective of a box em: bodying my invention as it appears when opened out for use; Fig. 2 the same partially folded; Fig. 3 a detail of one corner in plan viewv as shown in Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 the same in vertical section through the end.
. Like numbers refer to like part-s in all of the figures.
1 represents the bottom of the box; 2 the sides, and 3 the ends, each being a parallelogram in form and of a single integral piece of material, preferably of pasteboard or heavy paper. The ends'are provided with an upper extension 4 folded inward and adapted to engage the sides at the inner upper corners and hold the same in vertical position. This folded extension also forms a stiffening for theends, and I prefer to leave the same without fastening whereby 1t normally stands slightly inclined inward at the bottom, as indicated in Fig. 4. Each end of the end portion is also extended in a substantially right angled triangle as at 5, and extends around the corner of the box, and upon the outside of the same when opened out and is foldably secured at the hypotenuse by a marginal portion 6 secured to the sides by staples 8 and provided with a diagonal crease on the hypotenuse as at 7 between the parts 5 and 6, it being adapted to fold along this crease when the sides are turned down upon the bottom and the ends turned inward, as illustrated in Fig. 2. By this construction, the device readily folds without breaking and also folds inward in a very compact form within the horizontal dimensions of the bottom portion 1. When opened out for use, all that is necessary is to pull the ends up to place and the box automatically locks in open po sition. The ends present a smooth plane surface which may be labeled and the boxes placed side by side on a shelf with the outside extensions 5 and 6 covered.
lVhat I claim is A folding box, comprising a bottom portion, sides and ends integral therewith and adapted to fold inward upon the same, upper extensions on the ends folded inward and engaging the sides to hold the same vertical,
triangular extensions on the ends folded around the ends of the sides when the box is open, and a portion on the hypotenuse of each extension secured to the side portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I J OSEPI-I W. PUTNAM.
