HYDRAULIC MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL ANDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plnole, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydraulic Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydraulic motors, the object being to provide a motor which is very slmple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a motor which is automatic in operation, the valves being operated by a triplever which is operated by the weight as it moves up and down.
Another object of my invention is to provide a drive-shaft with a plurality of drums over which passes a cable the ends of which are connected to a sliding weight which is operated by a piston.
A further object of my invention is to provide very novel means for controlling the piston as it is moved up and down by the weights.
NVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a front view of my improved motor. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail hori- Zontal section through the motor.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a base on which is mounted a series of spaced uprights B provided with bearings at their upper ends, in which is mounted a shaft C, on which between each pair of uprights is loosely mounted a drum D provided with a ratchet-hub D adapted to engage a clutch E slidably mounted on the shaft, and held into engagement with the ratchet-hub by a coiled spring E, so that when the drum is turned in one direction, the'shaft will be rotated and when turned in a reverse direction, it will rotate freely on the shaft.
Arranged in front of each drum on the base, isapair of T-shaped uprights F forming guide-ways between which is slidably G secured together which may be of any size desired, according to the size of the motor. An eyebolt G is secured in the top of the upper weight, provided with a coiled-spring Gr to the upper end of which, is connected one end of a cable H which passes over a pulley 51 mounted on a shaft I secured in the upper ends of the frame, and down and around the drum D and under a pulley J mounted in brackets J on the base and then upwardly having its end connected to an eye-bolt G carried by the weights G.
Secured to the underside of each of the weights is a piston-rod K which extends down through a stuffing box L, into a cylinder M which is connected to a feed-pipe N, in which is arranged water under pressure of about fifty pounds, the rod K being provided with a head K so that when the valve 0 arranged in the lower end of the cylinder is opened, the weights will be raised, the cylinder M being connected to a discharge pipe P by a pipe P which is provided with a Valve Q which is connected to the valve 0 by a chain Q so that when one valve is opened the other is closed. The valve 0 is provided with a lever 0 through which is connected a rod R which extends up through an opening formed in the base and is connected to one end of a lever S mounted in a bracket S secured 011 the base, the other end of the lever being slotted, in which is mounted the angled end of a rod T, mounted in a bracket T secured to one of the uprights F, the rod T having arms U and U secured thereon adjacent its ends, adapted to be engaged by the weights as it moves up and down to operate the valve in the feed pipe and discharge pipes, so that after the weight has been forced up by the piston, the discharge valve will be opened and the weights will descend carrying the cable with it which will rotate the drum which in turn rotates the shaft. A valve V is arranged on the discharge pipe by means of which the motor is started, stopped and regulated.
The operation is as follows :-The weights are drawn upwardly into the position as shown in Fig. 1, and propped in this position, and the water is then turned on very slowly which will raise the weights and all the props to be removed, and as each weight reaches the top, it will strike the tripping arms, and close the feed-valve and open the discharge valve, so that the fluid in the cylinders can pass out through the same, and as the weights descend, the drums will be rotated by the cables, the ratchet hubs engaging the clutches which are keyed on the shaft causing the same to rotate.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V A hydraulic motor comprising a base pro vided with a series of spaced uprights having bearings at their ends, a shaft mounted in said bearings, a drum provided with a ratchet hub mounted on said shaft between each pair of uprights, a slidably mounted clutch coacting with said hub, a guide way arranged opposite each of said hubs, a weight mounted in each of said guideways, a coiled spring connected to the top of each of said weights, a cable connected to each of said springs passmg over pulleys carried by the base and guideways having their ends Wound around said drums, cylinders ar- 2 ranged under said Weights, pistons mounted in said cylinders engaging said weights, a feed and discharge pipe connected to the lower ends of said cylinders provided with valves, levers and rods for operating said 25 valve and tripping arms operated by said weights for operating said levers and rods.
