The shaft 14 carries between the bearings a pair of drum-heads 22, having hubs 23, that are fixed to the shaft by setscrews 24 or by any other suitable means. The outer ends of these hubs are beveled, as shown at 25, and
said outer ends engage the inner portions of. the inner ends of the rollers, as be evident by reference to Fig. 3. A thrust-bearing member 26 is secured to one end of the shaft and has a hub 27, providedwith a'beveled inner end-28, that engages the inner portions of the outer ends 'of the adjacent rollers, as shown in Fig. 3. Abrake-wheel 29 is secured to the opposite end of the shaft and has a hub. 30, provided with a beveled end 31 that en'ga es the outer ends of the rollers bearing. The above-described structureand relation of parts are im ortant'. It has been found that with the rol er-bearings as ordinarily constructed the rollers have a tendency to take positions in angular, relation to the shaft instead of parallel there- By having the beveled ends of the varito. ous hubs, however, engaging the inner portions of the roller'end this tendency is over come, and ex erience has demonstrated that the rollers wil remain parallel to the shaft. In this connection it is to be noted that parts of the hoisting mechanism constitute the means for thus retaining the rollers.
Clutch mechanism is mounted on the outer face of the brake wheel 29. In the present embodiment carrier-blocks 32 are adjustably mounted on said outer face and are movable toward and from the axis of rotation of the wheel. These blocks are held in adjusted position by bolts 33, passing through slots 34 therein and into the wheel. Guide-lugs35, carried by the inner sides of the blocks, en-

The outerends of the thrust-bars engage the away from each other. An actuating-stem 47 is longitudinally slidable 1n the hollow drum-shaft 14. One end of this shaft carriesa tapered-head 48, that is movable between the heads 46 of the thrust-bars, so as to separate said bars, and thereby swing the jaws 38 outwardlyagainst the tension of the spring" 43. A guidepin 49 is preferably mounted in the head 48 and is removable therefrom, said pin extending between the 5 heads 46 and having a retaininghead 50.

It will be evident that when the lever 53 is swung in one direction the stem 47 will be'moved longitudinally within the drum, the head 48 will spread the thrustbars- 44'apart, and the jaws will engage the driving-wheel, thus clutching the drum to the driving means. In order to prevent the longitudinal movement of the drum with the I s.tem, it will be observed that the heads 46 of the thrust-bars 44 are abutted against the hub 12 of the driving-wheel 11, as shown in Fig. 3, and, furthermore, this end thrust or movement is prevented by a bracket or 'kee or 55, see-ured to one of the standards 9 an embracing a flange 56 on the thrust member 26. It is also to be observed that by adjusting the carrier-blocks 32 toward and from each other the outer ends of the thrust-bars 44 may be made to engage the jaws 38 at di'tl'erent distances from their ends, '4
thereby varying the force exerted on said aws.
.lever 62, fulcrume'd on the frame, has a link connection 63 with the shank 61. This. lever 62 extends transversely of the lever 53 and has its free end disposed adjacent to the post 54. A cable 64, connected to the free end ofthe lever 62, also has a connection, as 1 shown at 63, with the upper end of the post 54, and a pulley 65, carried by the upper end cl the lever 53, operates on the cable 64-, An actuating-cable 66, passing around a guidesheave 67, also passes around a pulley 68 on the lever One end, as 69, of the cable 66, is secured to the supporting-frame. V The other end of said cable is located at the well which is being bailed, and consequently the said cable 66 can be extended in any direc* tion desired. The bail-operating cable is shown at 70 and is of course wound upon the drum formed by the shaft 14 and the two heads 22. p
The operation of the structure may be briefly described as follows: The driving shaft and wheel are continuously rotated by any suitable means, as already described. As long as the head 48 of the actuating-stem 47 is withdrawn from the thrust-rods 44 the jaws 38 are out of contactwith the drivingvrheel, andconsequently the hoisting mechanism is not operated. If the cable 66 is loose, the lever 62, which is provided with asuitable weight, as 62, is in its lowermost position. Consequently the band 57 will bind upon the wheel 29 and hold the drum against rotation. If it is now desired to Wind the cable upon the drum, the operator has only to draw upon the cable-66, whereupon the lever 53 will be moved to carry the head of the stem '47 between the thrust-rods, thus swinging the jaws into engagement with the dr1vmgWheel. 'A swinging movement of the lever 53 carries the pulley 65 away from the post 54, and as a result the lever 62 will be elevated, thereby loosening the brakeeband. When it is desired to stop the drum and hold it, it is only necessary to release the cable 66,
Whereupon,.as already described, the jaws will be disengaged from the driving-wheel and'the brake-band applied to the driving- Wh'eel. On the other hand, if it is desired to lower the ball into the Well then the cable 66 is held so that the 'lever 53 is in an intermediate position, iii which case the jaws 38 will be out of engagement with the driving-Wheel and the brake-band 57 Will be sufiiciently loose to permitthe drum to turn freely.
' From the foregoingit is thought that the I construction, operation, and many advantages ot' the herein-described invention Will be apparent to those skilled in the art with- Out further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may he resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully, described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In mechanism of the class described,
l the combination with a winding-drum, of
driving means, a clutch for connecting the drum and the driving means, a lever for actuatin the clutch, a brake for the drum,- a
lever or actuating'the brake, connections the levers for effecting the move- 'ment of one on the movement of the other,
said-connection being movably engaged'with one lever, and actuating means movably engaged with the other lever.

In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a winding-drum, of driving means therefor, clutch mechanism for connecting the drum .to the driving means, a lever for actuating the clutch mechanism, a brake for the drum, and a lever for connection at the other end, the other lever having a slidable engagement with said cable, and another cable'connected to said other lever for actuating the same.

In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a driving-shaft having a driving-wheel, of a drum having a brake- Wheel disposed adjacent to the driving- Wheel, clutch mechanism carried by the brake-Wheel and coacting with the driving wheel, a stem 0 crating in the drum for moving the clutc 1 mechanism, a lever connected to the stem, a brake-band operating on the brake-wheel, a reciprocatory. shank connected to the band, a lever connected to the. shank, a cable connected to said lever,

'5. In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a hollow windingdrum, of a brake-wheel carried thereby, a brake-band coacting with the brake-wheel, a lever for operating the brake-band, clutch mechanism mounted on the brake-wheel, an
actuating-stem for the clutch mechanism opcrating in the winding-drum, and means for simultaneously operating the brake-lever and stem.
6. In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a hollow windingdrum, of a brake-wheel carried thereby, a brake-band coacting with the wheel, a lever for operating the brake-band, clutch mechanism mounted on the wheel, an actuatingstem operating in the winding-drum for moving the clutch mechanism, a lever engaging the stem, and means associated with the stem-actuating lever and 'the brake band lever and operating upon movement in one direction to effect the release ofl the brakeband and-toapply the clutclrinechanism,
and'upon the reverse movement'to. release the clutch mechanism and apply the band.
the combination with a driving-shaft having a driving-wheel, of a drumcomprisingahoL low shaft independent of the driving-shaft and having a brake wheel located adjacent to the driving-wheel, clutch mechanism mounted on the brake-wheel and coacting with the driving-wheel, an actuating-stem for the clutch. mechanism mounted in the drumshaft and longitudinally movable therein, and a brake-band coacting with the periphery of the brake-wheel.

In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a driving-shaft, of a driving-Wheel mounted thereon and having a hub projecting beyond the shaft, forming a socket, a drum including a hollow shaft journaled in line with the driving-shaft, a wheel carried by the hollow shaft and located adj acent to the driving-wheel, jaws pivoted upon thedrum-wheel and swinging into and out of coaction withthe driving-wheel, thrust-bars bearing against the hub of the driving-Wheel and operating against the jaws for moving the same, an actuating-stem longitudinally movable in the driving-shaft and having a tapered end that moves between the thrustbars, and means for longitudinally moving the stem. 4 i
' 9. In -mechanism of the class described,
the combination with a drum comprising ashaft, of a journal-boxing for the shaft, rollers located in theboxing, a drum-head member fixed to the shaft on one side of the boxing and having a hub provided with a beveled end that engages the inner portion of the adjacent ends of the rollers, and another member fixed to the shaft on the opposite side of the boxing and having a hub provided with a beveled end that engages the inner portions of the opposite ends of the rollers, driving means, and clutch mechanism for connecting the driving means to the drum.

In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a drum including a shaft, spaced boxings surrounding the shaft, rollers located in the boxings, drum-heads secured to the shaft between the boxings and having hubs provided with beveled ends that engage the inner portions of the inner ends of the rollers, a brake-wheel secured to the shaft on the outer side of one of the boxingsand having a hub provided with a beveled inner end engaging the outer ends of the rollers, of clutch and brake mechanisms coact-ing with the brake-wheel, and an end thrust member secured to the shaft on the outer side of the other boxing, said end thrust member having a hub provided with a beveled end that engages the outer ends of the adjacent rollers.
