Description

UNITED STATES Trice.
MACHINE Fon Foam-ine ciertas AND PLUG-TOBACCO'.
Spccincation. forming part of LeitcrsPaient No. 97,292, dated November 3D, 1869. v
. marked thereon.
The nature ot 'our invention consists in pcculiar devices which can only bc understood b v reference to the drawings and specification.
To enable others skilled in' the artto make and use our. invention, we will proceed to describe its construction `and use. v
In the drawings, Figure l represents a per- ,"speetive View of' the entire machine. Fig. 2.`
is a vertical section ofthe more important parts ot' the machine. Fig. 3 is an `enlarged viewot' ,parts of the same. Fig. et represents an enlarged view of one ot' the carryi'ngfmold's. Fig. 5 represents lthe forming-apron' as it appears when it tirst takes hold of the tobacco. Fig. 6 represents the sanierwith the cigar or y plug-tobacco in the process of being rolled Our machine is constructed as follows: A 13 represents the frame. (j, Fig. 1, is the main driving-shaft, which is provided with cams for operating the cam-levers D and E, and with the. cranlrarm F for operating other parts ot'y the machine.
K isthelowerfecdiugbelt, which passes over the rollers ll, Figs. 2 and, and HT, Fig. l.
K' isthe upper feeding-belt and passes over the rollers H4 il, Fig. 2. These feedingbelts have an intermittent motion which is given them bythe stud Il on the slide F3, Fig. l, acting through the dogs .I-l H2 and the-reciprocating rod 11', lwhich actuates a pawl working in combination with the-gears at H4 115, Fig. 1. The feeding-belts serve to feed in the tobacco, which is placed upon the lower belt, K, by which it is carried along until it'comcs in contact with-theupper belt-,K. rlhen both belts, acting together, carry thc tobacco into the mouth l l" ot' thc compressing chamber Z, Figs. 3 and L. Atter sufficient tobacco has passed intothc machine to fill the chamber Z,
Fig. 3, the amount bein g regulated bythe adjustment ottfhvfpe.v dog. Il on -the reciprocating shaft El, Fig. 1, whichgoverns-thc mot-ion imparted to the feeding-belts, the separatingknife Ef E4, Fig. 3, which is operated by the ,cam-lever E, link E', rocker-shui1 t F2, and arm E3, Fig. l, passes down, closing the mouth P l, the feeding-belts being now at rest. Now, the knife E4 F.5 being stationary in the position represented in Fig. .5, the compound 'plunger' l)6 C C2 C3 C, Figs.3 and 2, begins its operation.
The part D of the plunger is operated by the cam-lover D, link 1)', arm DZ, rocirer-shai`t D, arm D4, and link D5; but vthe part C' C2,
&c., depends for its action upon D?, which draws it up by coming in contact with the start c, Figs. 2 and 3, and pushes it down by pressing upon the tobacco in the chamber Z, Fig. 3, the valve C3 being closed, as shown in Fi g. 3.
The lower end ot' the plunger D is provided `with a swinging piece, d., connected by means of a hinge, and also a piece ot' iiexiblc material,
d', so arranged that as the plunger passes down beyond the knife E5, as shown in Fig. 2, the piece d springs out so as to lill the whole space above Z. -As the plunger continues its descent itcompresses the tobacco within the chamber Z,and at the sametime carries down thepart 0F02 C until it gets nearly to the apronL, Fig. 2, when the bent arm 0*, having passed below C, swings outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2;,.and allows the valve O to open, a's shown in'Fig. 2.. At the same time the valve Q, Fig. 3, ist-hrown back into the vertical position shown iu Fig. 2, in which position it serves as a. continuationof the chanr'bcr Z, thus pre venting the tobacco from passing out. The continued downward motion of the plunger D presses'the tobacco with the apron L downward into the recess Z. Now, the plunger D begins to be withdrawn, and in its upward motion soon withdraws the parts C C2, the., during which 'operation' the slide Q F advances, carrying with it the roller F5, which, being under the apron L, carries the apron over the tobarco in the recess'Z, asshown in Figs. 5 and 6, lrepresenting the tobacco at the stage of progress represented byFig. 5. The coveringleat" lf, Fig. 5, is inserted, and as the roller F5 moves forward the tobacco is rolled up within the covering-leaf Z', and appears as shown in F1g. 6. The continued motion of the slide F3 carries forward the tobacco in the apron L and,
having rolled it in the proper form, delivers it to the hopper M. The slide F3 now retreats and all ofthe above-described motions are repeated, making anothercigar or plug.
The slide F3 is operated by the crank-arm F operating through the link F2.
N3, Fig. 1, is an endless chain or belt passing around the barrels N N5, and is operated by the linl N, attached to the slide F3, acting through the lever N', which, being provided with a pan'l, operates the ratchet-wheel N2, which is attached to the barrel N5.
.NG is a stay-paul, which serves to prevent the wheel N2 from moving in the Wrong direction. -The belt or chain N3 is provided With-a series of molds, one of which is represented in Figs.. y2 and 4, these molds being sufficient in number so that one may be always ready to takethecigaror plug whichis dropped through thchopper M." These molds consist of two parts, O and O', which are connected to the jaws (J2 03, Fig. 4. The part- 03 is pivoted to the part 02, and hasl a tail-piece, O, which,
coming incontact with the roller N4, as shown in Fig. 2, opens the mold to receive the cigar or plug as it drops from the hopper M. Now, as thc'mold moves in the direction of the a'rpoint of delivery.
What we claim as our inventiomand desire to secure byLetters Patent ofthe United States,
l. Combining with the plunger D6 the hingepiece d and the flexible apron d, workings'nb stantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the plungcrs C C2,
the valve C3, and bent arm C, operating sub-V stantially as described, andlor the purpose set forth. v
3. The valve Q, operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the automatic mold 0 0 O2, &c., with the endless chain 'or belt N5, working substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
