LATH-FEEDER FOR PAPER-CARRIERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WALDRON, of New Brunswick, inthe county of Middlesexl and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lath-Feeder for Paper- Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v
The invention relates to lath feeders for paper carriers such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 416,404, granted to Isaac Dunn, under date of December 3, 1889.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved feeder which issimple and durable in construction and arranged to automatically feed a single lath at a time upon the corresponding set of fingers on the carrier chain or belt.
The invention consists of a feed slide operating in conjunction with the carrier belt, so as to take a single lath from the chute onto the carrier.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will beV hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the' improvement.
Y The improved lath feeder for paper carriers is provided with a suitably constructed frame A, supporting a lath-feeding hopper B, into which the laths C, are promiscuously thrown, the said laths being adapted to receive the paper or fabric in the manner described in the patent above referred to.
In front of the hopper B is journaled acylinder D, anda feed regulating wheelnE, both rotating in the same direction, the wheel E serving to hold the laths back so as to permit a single lath at a time to passinto the chutes F, arranged on the inside of the sides of the The device, so .far as described, is fully shown and described in the patent above referred to.
The lower ends of the chutes F discharge into casings G, attached to the sides of the main frame A, and in each of the said casings is mounted to slide a feed slide H, provided with a recess H adapted to register with the end of the corresponding chute F, so as to permit the end of the lath to pass into the said recess. The lath is supported at its ends in two feed slides H and is carried downward bythe latter to be discharged upon a set of locks or fingers I','arranged on the carrier chains or belts I, for elevating the said lath and to permit the paper or fabric to be looped on the corresponding lath. or chains I pass over sprocket wheels J, secured on a transversely extending shaft J', journaled in suitable bearings attached to the main frame A and driven from suitable machinery forming part ofthe general machine. In order to actuate the feed slides vH at the proper time to take a lath from the end of the hopper down onto the corresponding set of fingers I', the following device is provided,- On one of the carrier chains I are secured transversely-extending pins I2, one for each set of lingers I', each pin being adapted to engage the lower end of an arm K4, forming part of levers K, engaging the plungers 0I' slides H so as to draw the saine downward in their casings G. The two levers K are secured on a transversely-extending rock shaft K' jonrnaled in the sides of the frame A and provided with a rearwardly-extending arm K2, connected with one end of a spring K3, attached at its other end to the main frame A, see Fig. 1. The spring K3 has a tendency to hold the set of levers in their normal position, t0 cause the slides or plungers H to register, by their recesses H', with the lower ends of the chutes F, as plainly shown in Fig. 1.
In order to prevent breakage of the feeding arrangement in case an imperfect lath docs not fully enter the feed slides, or undue jar of the plungers or slides in their casings, I interpose between the levers K and the feed slides a yielding connection, preferably in the shape of a spring H2, so that the lever K first presses the spring to a certain extent before the feed slide commences to move downward,
lwith its recess I-I' out of register with the end of the chute F. In order to prevent each slide from passing too far upward in the casing Gr, I provide each slide with a regulating screw H3, adapted to abut against the upper end of the casing, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
The operation is as fo1lows,-When the sevlOO eral parts are in the position as illustrated in the drawings, then the recesses Il in the two slides Il register with the lower ends of the chutes F, so that the lowermost lath can pass into the said recesses, the latter being sufficiently wide to accommodate a single lath. At this time, a corresponding pin l2 engages the lower end of the arm K4 so as to impart a downward swinging motion to the levers K, whereby the latter pull the slides or plungers II downward so that the upper solid end of each slide closes the lower end of the corresponding chute and, at the same time, the lath is carried to the top of the carrier chains I to be taken hold of by the next following set of fingers I which move thelath out of the recesses H' and carry the lath upward.
As shown in Fig. 1, the slides Il have areciprocating sliding movement at right angles to the upper strand of the carrier chain I, so that the set of fingers I carry the lath out of the recesses H of the slides, as the said recesses are in alignment with the upper strands of the carrier belts or chains. As soon as the lingers have taken hold of the corresponding lath and moved the same out of the set of slides, then the pin I2 drops off the arm K1 at the bend in the latter, so that the spring K3, acting on the arm K2, causes the levers K to swing upward back to their normal positions, thus moving the slides or plungers I-l in the same direction until their recesses Il' again register with the lower ends of the chutes F. The lowermost lath in the chutes F now passes into the recesses H and the abovedescribed operation is repeated, that is, the lath is carried down by the slides upon the carrier chain I, to be taken hold of by the next set of fingers and carried upward to receive another loop of the paper.
In order to agitate the laths in the feed hopper B to insure a proper delivery of the laths to the chutes F, I provide the following device: On the shaftJ previously mentioned, is secured an eccentric L, having its eccentric rod L connected with an arm N extending from a rock shaft N journaled in suitable bearings on the main frame Ain front of the cylinder D, see Fig. 1. On this shaft N is arranged a series of raking fingers O extending upward through apertures in the bottom of the hopper B, so that when a rocking mo tion is given to the said shaft N from the eccentric L, then the said fingers strike the laths in the hopper from below, thus agitating the same and insuring a proper feeding of the laths over the cylinder D into the chutes F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the delivery chute for the laths and the carrier chain adapted to receive the laths, of feed slides having guided movement from the delivery chute t0 the carrier chain, to feed the laths singly to the latter,
and means for operating the said slides, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the delivery chute for the laths and the carrier chain adapted to receive the laths, of casings extending from the delivery chute to the carrier chain, feed slides having guided movement in the said casings and adapted to feed the laths singly to the carrier chain, and means for operating the saidslides, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination, with the delivery chute for the laths and the carrier chain adapted to receive the laths, of feed slides having guided movement from the delivery chute to the carrier chain, to feed the latter singly to the latter, and an operative connection between the carrier chain and the said slides to intermittently actuate the latter, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a set of casings arranged on the lower ends of the delivery chutes, of feed slides mounted to slide in the said casings and provided with recesses adapted to register with the lower ends of the said chutes to receive the lowermost lath, a set of levers adapted to actuate the said feed slide to move the same downward to close the lower end of the chutes and to move the supported lath upon the carrier chain, and carrier chains provided with fingers and pins adapted to actuate the said levers and impart a sliding motion to the said slides, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a' device of the class described, the combination, with two slides, each having a recess for the reception of the end of the lath, of a set of levers for the said slides, a yielding connection between the slides and levers, an arm projecting from the said 1ev vers, and carrier chains provided with iingers, and pins on one of the said chains, the said pins being adapted to engage the said arm to impart a swinging motion to the latter and its levers, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination, with two slides, each having a recess for the' reception of the end of the lath, of a set of levers for the said slides, a yielding connection between the slides and levers, an arm projecting from the said levers, carrier chains provided with fingers, and pins on one of the said chains, the said pins being adapted to engage the said arm to impart a swinging motion to the latter and its levers, and a spring connected with the said set of levers to impart a return movement to the slides, substantially as shown and described.
