MoLDrNG-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1 910.
Application Sled December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,370'.i
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known thatwe, CARL P. BOHLAND and JosnPI-r J. CoNNnLLY, citizens of t-he United States, residing at Superior, in the county of Douglas andState of `\Viscons1n, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in molds, and more particularly tothe molds for bins or tanks which are circular in shape and intended for storing grain and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide i means whereby the mold can be raised after the first section of the bin is formed, and the mold, after having been raised the desired distance, is secured or locked upon the molded article or section, when the mold is again filled with the cement or concrete for building the bin the desired height.
The inventionl consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of anV pointed out in the claims.
` In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in eleva-tion, showing the concrete structure .and walls of the mold in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical'section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing the manner of connecting the pipes Which are used as a reinforcement inthe concrete structure.
A, A, represent the uprights and B, B,
.the Walls of the mold which are connected to the uprights A. A baril is rigidly con- `nected to one of the uprights A by means of bolts 2'passing through an angle plate 3 connected to Vthe uprights. The other end of `the bar slides beneath an angle plate 4 and in a recess formed in the annular platform C which extends around the interior of the mold. A tube orrod 5 is received between the walls of the mold B and is embedded in the concrete or cement for form- .ing a reinforcement for the concrete wall.
The rod or tube extends through an opening formed in the bar 1 upwardly between the uprights A. The Urshaped yoke 6 is received around the uprights Aland the ends of the yoke are connected together and held upon the uprights by plate 7 and nuts 8.
A lever 9 is plvotally connected to one of the uprights A and is also connected to the yoke 6. When the lever 9 is thrown down. wardly against the platform 0 the uprights A are drawn together, causing the arts which will be hereinafter describedwalls.v vB to be'drawn toward cach other." But when the lever is thrown upwardly practically parallel with the uprights A, the
walls will separate from leach other slightly,
o r sufliciently to allow the mold to be drawn upwardly. 'Pivotally mounted upon the upper surface of the bar 1 are dogs 10, 1-0,
which are adapted to engage the tube 5 forv provided with an annular groove 14. The
collar is preferably made in two `sections and received between the sections is the hub 15 of a wheel 1G. Upon the hub 15 is an annular rirn 17, which is adapted to be received in the groove 14.' A screw-threaded sleeve -18 is received over the tube 5 and is adapted to pass through the opening 12 to the beam 11, and the hub 15 of the wheel 16 is screw-threaded, whereby a screwthreaded engagement'is formed between the sleeve 18 and the wheel 16. Connected to the lower end of the sleeve 18 is auide# plate 19 which is provided with forke ends 20, between which are received the uprights A, 'the plate being held upon the sleeve by a thumb-screw 21 which prevents the sleeve from turning. Arms 22 are yformed on the sleeve and pivotally connected to the arms by means of links 23 are dogs 25, which dgs are provided with openings through adapted to engage the rod for locking and retainin the mold in its raised position. The un er surfacev of the `plate 19 is beveled from the center toward the ends, as indicated by the dotted lines 26.
Assuming that the cement or concrete has been poured into the mold and foriued into which the rod 5 extends, and the dogs are the proper shape, and -it is desired .to raise the mold for`bui1ding the wall higher. .The lever-9 is raised, whereby the walls B are released from the walls of the molded article,
Wheel 16 is then turned to the left, which causes the uprights A and Walls B of the mold to move upwardly, sleeve 18 remaining stationary. The Wheel is turned unt-il the walls of the mold have been brought to about within 6 inches from the top of the molded wall. After this adjustment has been obtained the lever 9 is thrown down,
constructed with our device, as it can easilyI be adapted to a straight wall, orany other lshaped wail aswell asthe circular wail, and
' raising operation.
"causing the sleeve 18 to be raised causing the walls be brought into engagement with the walis of the molded article. After this operation of raising the mold, there will be little oi the sleeve'left for the The dogs 25 have been supporting the mold during the raising operation, and before the screw sleeve is raised upwardly for the next operation, the wheel 16 Will'be continued to move upwardly unt-i1 the plate 19 has engaged the dogs 10, causing them to firmly grip the tube 5. As the dogs 10 continue to move upwardly on the bar 1, the upper end s of the dogs will engage the beveled surfaces of the plate 19, which will cause them to be forced against the pipe or tube 5. After this hasv been accomplished, the' wheel 1'6 Will be turned to the right,
dogs 25 released from engagement with the tube. The sleeve will be raised to the de.`
sired height, when the mold can again be raised upon lthe turningr of the wheel 3 6 to `the left, after the lever 9 has been raised to its vertical position. This operation is con# tinued until the wall is made to the proper height. Of course,
raising or lowering of either the sleeve or Athe mold may be performed at any intermediate point. In Fig. 3 We have disclosed the manner of connecting the tubing together. When the top of a tube has been reached in the molding operation, and it is desired to add another length of piping," two short lengths of piping 27 are provided, which lare screw-threaded and connected to which is a coupling 28. .An end of each of the pipes 27 is adapted to be received Within the tubing 5. After the twol pipes have heen connected together, they willtake the position as indicatedby the dottedlines, thereby presenting" a, smooth surface for the dogs 10 and 25 to grip during the operation of raising the mold.
We do not care to limit ourselves to any particular formation of Wa'li which may be hence We do n ot care to be iimited 'to the exact construction set forth, but Having fully described our invention, what l. The combination benioved.

`5. The combination with a mold, of screwelutching means adapted to engage the rod,
threaded sleeve, a rod passing through the sleeve, means on the sleeve adapted to engage the rod, a guide-plate connected to the sleeve, and a. rotatable nut adapted to engage the sleeve for causing the mold .to be moved upwardly.
6. The combination with a mold, of a screw-threaded sleeve, arod passing through the sleeve, dogs adapted to engage the rod, a guide-plate on t-h'e sleeve, a rotatable nut enthe mold to be raised and causing the piate gaging the screw-threaded sleeve for causing to engagel the dogs for locking the mold in its raised position, .seid nut A turn the sleeve to its normal or orlgmai position'.:
