I ATTORNEY away,- of a type-writing mac ine embody-- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. h
EVANDER MOGILVARY, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Application filed September 22, 1905. SerialNo. 279,573.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVANDER B. MCGIL- VARY, of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of- Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment for Type-'VVriters, of which the following is a I specification.
My invention has for its object the production of an attachment for type-writing machines, whereby at the will of the operator, an auxiliary character, as an u'nderscoring character, may be printed in predetermined osition as the regular characters are forme thus obviating manipulation of the machine for effecting the insertion or interlineation of the auxiliary character;
.and to this end my invention consists in the novel combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and pointed out, in "the claims.
In describing this invention, reference is .had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters design-ate parts in all the views. h Figure 1 is a top plan View, artly broken corresponding ing one exemplification of my invention, a
type-carrying member being shown in print- 1 mg position. Fi 2 is an enlarged plan of parts shown in ig. 1, a portion of a typecarrying member being illustrated in its position assumed when the upper-case typeclnaracter thereof isiatthe printing point, an
positlon by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an eleva- 1 tion of the parts seen in Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated the well known Remington type of machine, but I- do not restrict my invention to use on any-particular machine, since the structure can readily be modified for adjustment or attachment to other types of machines, as will be obvious -to those I skilled in the art.
The device embodying my invention may be constructed as a separate means for subse uent attachment I0 type-writing machines, or'if desired, it maybe manufactured and assembled with the machine and form an; integral or. inseparable part thereof;
1 is the frame of the.machine, '2 the 'laten, and 3, 3 the type-carrying 1nem rs of the printing instrumentalities. Thenienibers 3 are movable singly in converging paths to aconnnon printing position and Speciflcation'of Letters Patent.
arts being shown in their inoperative Patented 0a. 11, 1910.
are each formed with up er and lower-case characters. 4 is a movable element of the means for determining whet-her the u case or lower-case type-characters wi brought into printing position, This ele-' ment 4 consists of a bar which extends from side to side of the machine, is movable rear:
wardly and forwardly, and is suitably 0on nected to'a shifting mechanism and to the platen 2, the latter being movable rearwardly and forwardly with the member 4. In the illustrated exemplification of my in vention, the member 4 is normally itsforward position so that .the lowercase characters are brought into printing position, and upon the operatlon of the shifting mechanism'the member 4 and the platen 2- are moved rearwardly to bring the upperdo notrestrict myinvention' to use upon a ma'chi'n'eoff t-heillustrated type 1n which the printing point is shiftable relatively to and lower-case characters.
5 is the auxiliary-charatiter-carrying niemher, the illustrated construction thereof con 9'9 s1stn1g of an arm pivoted at 6 at oneendsaidrharacters. Ken-her do I restuict my nvention to a machine having both upper and provided with an auxiliary character 7.,
at: its free end, this arm consisting of two,
sections. the one carrying the characte 7, being adpistable relatively to the: other secs, tion and secured thereto by sult'able fastening means 8. The'character 7 here shown is supported near the pointof convergence of the paths of the printing members 3 and serves to print underscoring in :connection with the regular type-characters and in the same letter-spaces, but-it will be obvious that said character may be of anydesirable forln to print any other auxiliary impression," The member 5 is formed with an opening 9,
which receives-the type-characters onT'thef members 3, and -lso formed with a contact-surface 10 .61 receiving the actu athig impulses of-said members When my invention is used with machine's 5 '13 to move the auxiliary-character-carrying having their type-bars provided with upperopenings 9 andcontactrsurfaces 10, one in advance of the other, the rear opening 9 receiving the lowercase characters and the rear contact-surface 10, Fig. L, being'engaged by the members 3 when assuming printing position, and the: front and rear openings 9.-1eeeivi11g, 1'es'pecti' vel the lower and up,pcr case characters, and the front contact-surface 10 being engaged by the members'ti; Figs. and 3,- When the machine is used for upper-cas work. Upon the movement of a member 3 to printing position, th'e auxiliary-character-carrying memher 5' yields or moves upwardly, and upon the return of sa'idmember 3, the member 5 returns 0 its normal position in engagement with any-suitable abutment as an armf ll carried v the frame of the machine and prevent further movementof the with the type-carrying member, which continues its movement relatively to the member In the illustrated 'exemplific'ation of my invention, the member 5 is mountedon a movable support or arm 12 connected by apivot 13to a part or block 14 provided on the movable element 4, the pivot-'13. being arranged at an angle to the pivot- 6. The
front end of the support or arm 12 ispro-- added, with a handle 15 which facilitates rocking of said; support or'arm on the pivot member 5 into and out of the path of movementof the type-carrying members. A suitable stop, as a screw 16, is carried by the part or block 14 for limiting the movement of the support or arm.12 toward its inoperative or normal position, and the support 'or arm 12 is provided with an adjustable stop, asa screw-l7, for engaging the part or block 14 and limiting the movement of said support or arm in the other direction.
Although the described means for supp'o rting'and moving the auxiliarytype-car rymg' member 5 is particularly simple and is {readily attached v in position, it willfbe apparent that the same is only one of the many structures suitable for such purpose, and
conseque-ntly I do not restrict myinvention' thereto.
Having thus what I claim as new and desire Letters-Patent, is: I
