Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Serial No. 540,634.
citizen of the United States, residing at Copperhill, in the county of Polk and State I of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NutLocks, of whlch the ,following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in nut locks, and more partlcularly a devlce adapted for locking the packing nuts of a pump.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will effectively lock the packing nuts of the piston rod of opposing cylinders in a pump or analogous machines.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the-invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View taken on the plane at right angles to the plane in Fig. 1, the plane of the section being indicated by the dotted line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the packing nuts; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the locking member; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the guide member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 denote the opposing cylinders of a pump or analogous machine, 3 the reciprocatory rod for the pistons of said cylinders, and 4 the packing nuts for the rod arranged on the opposing or inner ends of the cylinders. These nuts have the usual polygonal shape and in their flat faces are formed seats 5 preferably in the form of longitudinal. grooves adapted to receive the locking member 6 of my improved nut looking device. This member 6 is T-shaped and has the arms 7 of its cross portion shaped to simultaneously enter the grooves 5 in both of the nuts 4 to lock them against rotation. The third branch or arm 8 of the locking member is slidably mounted in a tubular guide member or sleeve 10 and it is actuated inwardly by a spring 12, the latter being preferably a coil arranged on the inner end of the branch 8 and bearing against the cross head or arms 7 to force the latter toward the nuts. The guide member 10 may be of any form and construction and supported in any desired manner but it is preferably made from a piece of pipe and has its inner end screwed into the usual center piece or casing 13 of the pump. The outer end of the guide member or tool 10 is longitudinally slotted at opposite points, as shown at 14 for the reception of a transverse pin or key 15 removably arranged in a transverse opening formed in the branch 8 of the locking member. The length of the slots 14: is such that the locking member may move inwardly a suflicient distance to effectively lock the nuts d, but when said member 6 is drawn outwardly to disengage the ends of the pins 5 from the slots 14, and said member 6 is turned slightly to bring the ends of the pin against the outer edge of the tubular guide member 10, the locking member will be held in retracted position. To permit the locking member to be readily manipulated, its projecting outer end is provided with a head or handle 16 preferably in the form of a nut screwed on the branch i and having a knurled or roughened outer ace.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, use and advantages, of the invention will be readily understood, and while I have shown and described the in vention as especially constructed and adapted for locking two packing nuts on the opposing ends of the two cylinders of a pump, I wish it understood that the device may be adapted for locking a greater or less number of nuts, and may be used in other ways than the one illustrated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. The combination of a support, a pair of oppositely disposed nuts, the latter having seats, a tubular guide provided on said support and provided in its outer end with a longitudinally extending notch, a T-shaped locking member having one branch slidably and rotatably mounted in said tubular guide, and its cross portion adapted to simultaneously engage the seats in said nuts, a spring for projecting the locking member into engagement with said nuts, and a radial pin carried by the locking member and movable into and out of said notch in the tubular guide, whereby said locking member may be held in retracted position when the pin is drawn out of said notch and turned to engage the outer extremity 0]": the tubular guide.
2. The combination of opposing cylinders, a connecting casing, opposing packing nuts on the cylinders for the rod of the pistons of said cylinders, said nuts being provided with seats, a tubular guide supported in said casing and projecting radially with respect to the piston rod, the outer end of said tubular guide being notched, a T-shaped locking member having one branch slidably and rotatably arranged in said tubular guide and its cross portion adapted to simultaneously engage the seats in said nuts, a coil spring on the first mentioned branch of the locking member for actuating the latter inwardly, and a radial pin carried by the first mentioned branch of the locking member and movable into and out of the notch in said tubular guide, whereby when said member is retracted and the pin withdrawn from the notch and turned into engagement with the outer extremity of the tubular guide, said locking member will be maintained in retracted position.
3. The combination of opposing cylinders,
a connecting casing, opposing packing nuts on the cylinders for the rod or the pistons in said cylinders, said nuts being formed in ing member for actuating the latter in- A,
wardly, a handle on the projecting outer end of the first mentioned branch of the locking member, and a cross pin in the first mentioned branch of the locking member, said pin being movable into and out of the slots in the tubular guide, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
