WILLIAM L. WARD, 0F SAGUACHE, COLORADO.
BARREL.
Application filed January 14, 1909.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saguache, in the county of Saguache and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cylindrical vessels such as barrels, cases and the like, the object of the invention being to provide an improved barrel or case which 1s composed of a number of sections and is provided with means for expeditiously securing such sections together or detaching them so that the barrel or case may, when emptied, be taken apart and disposed compactly for transportation or storage.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel or case constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same set up. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of one of the hoops with its attaching device. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other end of the same hoop with its detaching device, the releasing pin for-the pawl being shown detached. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the pawls.
The body of my improved barrel or case is made of a suitable number of segmental sections, 1, 1, said sections being shown in the drawings. The edges of the said sections are beveled as at 3 so that the said sections partially overlap at their meeting edges and each at its edges exerts wedge like action on the other when the hoops are tightened and hence tight joints are formed between the said sections. In practice, any suitable number of hoops may be employed. Two of the said hoops 4 are here shown, the said hoops being disposed at suitable distances from the ends of the barrel or case. The hoops are preferably straps of suitable metal and the said hoops are provided at their meeting ends with securing and tensioning devices. One end of each is provided with a tongue or link 5, preferably of metal, secured on said end of the hoop as at 6 and provided at its inner end with an outstanding hook 7 On the outer side of the said tongue or link is a series of ratchet teeth 8. On the opposite end of the hoop is a keeper which comprises a frame 9 and a pawl 10. The said frame is preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

made of sheet metal, has its central portion secured to the hoop as at 11 and has its end portion out-turned to form sides 12 disposed in parallel relation and provided at their inner ends with hooks 13. Between the sides of the walls of the keeper the pawl 10 is pivoted as at 13, the said pawl being adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 8 of the link or tongue 5 when said link or tongue is placed between the sides of the keeper and it will be observed that the said pawl in coaction with the said ratchet teeth secures the tongue to the keeper at any desired adjustment and hence when a hoop is drawn around the body of the case or barrel to secure the segmental sections thereof together, the said fastening devices of the hoop secure it at the requisite tension on the barrel and maintain it at such tension. In order to keep the pawls 10 from casually disengaging the teeth of the links or tongue, I provide pins 15 which are preferably split pins and are when in use inserted in openings 16 in the sides of the keepers 9 and bear on the outer sides of the pawls. To prevent the hoops from moving longitudinally on the body of the barrel, I provide the sections of the barrel with studs 17 which project outwardly therefrom and enter slots 18 with which the hoops are provided.
Each head 19 of my improved barrel or case is provided 011 opposite sides at its perimeter with a pair of securing rings 20 each of which has an outstanding flange 21 to bear against and extend around the inner side of the barrel. The said flanges are provided with openings for the reception of the ends of inwardly extending studs 22 which are here shown as similar in con struction to the studs 17.
It will be obvious that when the hoops are loosened on the barrel to permit the separation of the sections 1, the heads may then be readily removed since they are secured to the barrel only by the pressure of the sections of the barrel on their perimeters and the coaction of their flange rings 20 and the studs 22.
WVhat is claimed is A vessel of the class described comprising a plurality of separable segmental sections, heads removably engaged with the said sections, hoops to extend around said sections when assembled, said hoops being open on one side and each provided at one In testimony whereof I affix my signature end with a toothed tongue and at the other in presence of two witnesses.
end with a pivoted pawl to en age the teeth of the tongue, a frame for si lpporting the WILLIAM VVARD' pawl, and a removable pin engaged with the Vitnesses:
