@ETTEN STATES PATENT @FETCH JAMES G. SUMMERS, 0F CHARLESTON, WST VIRGINIA.
STAMP-IVIOISTENER.
Application led July 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. Simancas, a l
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and vState of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Stamp-Moisteners, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention is an improvement in stamp moisteners and has for an object to provide a novel construction of moistener which can be placed on a desk or other support and will include a sponge cup, a cup holder and a main casing so constructed as to permit the easy refilling of the moistener with water, and the auton'iatic or self-feeding of the water to the sponge and which will always be ready for convenient use: and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view and Fig. 52 is a vertical longitudinal section of a moistener' embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the main casing. Fig. 4l is a detail sectional view of the cup holder. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the sponge cup with the sponge in place. Y
The device, as shown, comprises a main casing A, a cup holder Band a sponge cup C. The main casing A has a cylindrical body A open at the top `and closed at its lower end by the bottom plate A2. The cup holder B has a body portion B open at the top and provided at its top or upper end with an annular outwardly projecting flange B2 which rests upon the upper open end of the main casing and has a lip B" depending along the outer side of the body A of the main casing and steadying the cup holder firmly in position within the main casing, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The body B is smaller than the body A affording a water space D between the body A and the body B and surrounding the latter, as will be understood from Fig. 2. The body B is also of a length less than the body A so that the lower end of the body B will lie above the bottom A2 of the main casing so water can circulate from the space D below the body B to supply water to the sponge, as presently described. Near its lower end the body B has a foraminous diaphragm B4 which may be of a tine mesh wire cloth of brass or the like held within Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 191).
1910. Serial No. 570,279.
l the lower end of the body B by a ring B5, see Fig. 4l, which may be soldered or brazed in position and will operate to hold the diaphragm B4 firmly in place slightly above the lower end of the body B of the cup holder.
The sponge cup C has a body portion C adapted to tit within the body B of the cup holder and this body B is open at the bottom and is closed at the top by a foraminous diaphragm C2 which like the diaphragm B4 may be of a line mesh wire cloth suitably held in the upper end of the body C and flush with or slightly above the upper end of the body C', which body C lies approximately in the plane of the upper face of the flange B2 of the cup holder. The sponge E in the cup holder rests at its lower end upon the diaphragm B4 and at its upper edge against the underside of the diaphragm C2 and when the moistener is applied to the casing it will be fed up through the diaphragm B4 to the sponge and thence to position to supply moisture to a stamp when the latter is pressed against the diaphragm C2.
In practice the moistener may be made of any suitable material, glass, metal or other substance, being employed in making the main casing, cup holder and the body of the sponge cup and any suitable fora-minous material such as wire cloth as above described or other fabric may be employed in the production of the diaphragms for use as described.
I claim:
l. A stamp moistener, substantially as herein described, comprising a main casing having a cylindrical body open at the top, a cup holder having a body portion fitting in that of the main casing and spaced from the main casing, a foraminous diaphragm at the lower end of the body of the cup holder, a lateral flange at the upper end of the body of the cup holder and extending over and resting upon the upper end of the main casing and having a lip depending along the outer side of the main casing and a sponge cup litting in the cup holder and open at its bottom and having' a foraminous diaphragm at its upper end, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Q. A stamp moistener comprising a casing open at the top, a cup holder litting therein and having its lower end spaced from the bottom of the casing and its upper end open and a sponge cup fitting in the open upper end of the cup holder and having its lower end open and provided at its upper end with a foramnous diaphragm, substantially as set forth.
8. A stamp lnostener comprising a easing open at the top, a Cup holder having a. bod;T portion communicating at its lower end with the casing and open at its upper end and provided at such end with a lateral lange resting upon the upper end of the easing, 10 and a, sponge cup in said holder7 substantally as set forth.
