of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have inventedeertain new .and useful Improvements in Line-Casting Machines, of which the following is n specificat-ion. i I
These improvements in line casting ma: chines have to do with the mold in which the slug or'line is case-said mold being a travelinginold, which moves from casting to ejecting position and return, as usual in machines orihis class; and they relate more particularly to a traveling mold ofv this character which is varis'bleas to the length and width of its mold space and is combined with suitable means for automatically closing the mold to one 'len th and width or another as required, and a so with means for automatically opening themold in both directions during its travel. A mold of this general character is not here broadly claimed, inasmuch as I have made it the subject of my patent for improvements in line casting machines, No. 944,981 of December 28, 1909. In the mold of my said patent the closin of the mold to predetermined lengthand width, takes place through the agency of spring actuated means which automatically o crate as soon as the mold, on its return movement from ejecting to casting position, quitsthe devices by which it is opened in both directions. In my present application, in lieu of said spring actuatedv means, I employ stops which operate not only automatically but positively to close the urold to. redetermined length and widththis action taking place near" the close of the return movement'of the mold from ejecting to casting position; and these stops I unite with independent ad usting means whereby the sto 5 may be set to close the mold antomatical y and positively to varying lengths and widths as required. 'In this way the action of-the parts of the mold is rendered more certain and accurate, and I am cnabifed to dispense entirely with spring actuated .mold closing devicesn point of some practical importance, inasmuch as the heat due to the casting operation is apt to have an injurious influence on the springs used for this purpose.

In order to open and close the mold, I provide the wedge 15, with an upwardly 23, 23 againstwhich alternately the linger between casting sndejecting position. To open and close the mold lengthwise, and to vary the length of the slot, I use a similar system of stops in connection with the lower jaw, with the difference, however, that in this case the two stops are not connectcd so as to be adjustable together, but

It is not important that the widthwise opening stop 23 be adjustable, any more than in tht case of the lengthwise opening stop t. But it is essential. that the closing stop 23' should be both longitudinally adjustable and combined with means for hold ing it rigidly-and unyieldingly in its adjusted position. The capacity for lengthwise adjustmentis essential because thereby the width of the slot is determined; and. the stop in whatever position it may be set must be rigid and unyielding, because it cannot otl erwisefinsin'e the accuracy of closing which is indispensable to good work.
