SAFETY BASE-BALL-SI-IOE PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed March 16, 1910. Serial No. 549,618.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KINZEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Base-Ball-Shoe Plate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and improved plate to be attached to an athletes shoes to aid him in obtaining a quick start when standing on yielding ground.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, readily accessible for the purpose of repairing or renewing of the parts, and positive in its action, yet comparatively safe.
A further object of this invention is to providea safety plate for shoes, the spikes of which may be readily renewed when worn out.
These and other objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, and in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of a shoe showing heel and sole plates attached there to; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates a shoe, to the heel and sole of which may be attached my anti-slip device indicated at 2.
The device consists of a plate 3 somewhat triangular in shape and having a central opening t for the sake of lightness, and which is attached by any suitable means to the sole of the shoe, as by rivets 5. These rivets 5 pass through openings in the plate 3, which are located preferably centrally of lugs 6 on the plate 3, the lugs being provided with screw-threaded sides which are adapted to be engaged by corresponding screw threads on caps 7. Each of the caps 7 has an opening in its top, or in other words, has an inwardly-projecting circular flange 8, which terminates in a boundary for a circular opening.
The cavity between the lug 6 and the flange 8, forms a suitable receptacle for a flange 9 on a spike 10. This spike 10 is preferably formed conical at its lower extremity and may be made entirely of metal, but I prefer, in order to render the spike comparatively harmless when it strikes a person, to incase the same in a suitable resilient material, such as rubber formed to a sharp point as indicated at 11. case, the body of the spike is made of metal with a flange 9 and a projecting knob 12, preferably of rounded form on which the resilient covering 11 is molded. It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient device, which will positively engage the ground to enable the wearer to obtain a firm footing, and which is practically harmless in case the wearer should happen to step on another person. Moreover, it will be seen that should the spikes l0 wear out, they can be readily replaced by new spikes in the shortest possible space of time.
While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which I may make within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with a plate, of an eXteriorly-threaded lug on said plate, a threaded cap engaging said lug, an inwardly-extending flange on said cap, and a spike having a flange therein interposed between said lug and said first-mentioned flange, whereby said spike is secured to said plate.
2. The combination with a plate, of an eXteriorly-threaded lug on said plate, a threaded cap engaging said lug, an inwardly-extending flange on said cap, a spike having a flange therein interposed between said lug and said first-mentioned flange, whereby said spike is secured to said plate, and a resilient cover for said spike.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD KINZEL.
