Description

No..l57,985.
L. w. BuxToN, Boot and Shoe Heels.
I v Patented Dec.22,l874.-
' INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
LEVI W. BUXTON, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,985, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. BUXTON, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Protectors for Boot and Shoe Heels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed. drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of an elevated side view of a shoe having my protector attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the heel of the same 5 and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my protector, of which Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
This invention has relation to protectors for boot and shoe heels, the object of which is to prevent the boot or shoe heel from wearin g out on the side and from slipping on sidewalks, ice, &c. It consists in combining with a perforated circular metallic plate a circular rubber ring having elastic studs extending through this plate, which is secured firmly to the heel by means of a screw passing through the center of the plate and rubber into the heel, as will be hereinafter expla ned.
In the annexed drawings, A designates acircular metallic plate, which has a concentric circle of perforations, a, near its edge, and a hole, B, through its center, surrounded by a projecting wall. 0 designates an indiarubber ring, with a flange, 0, around its edge, and a circle of studs, cl, arranged and constructed so that they will pass through the perforations a in the plate A, when said plate is pressed into the recess formed in the ring 0. When the ring and plate are thus brought together the studs d will extend beyond the bottom of plate A, and
serve as a means for preventing the boot or shoe heel from wearing out on the side. D designates a screw, which passes through the center of the plate A and the rubber ring B into the center of the heel, firmly securing said plate and rubber ring to the heel. This rubber ring and the elastic studs serve as means for preventing the boot and shoe from slipping on the walks or ice, and renders such plates comparativelynoiseless when treading upon hard substances.
It will be seen from myconstruction that the projecting piece 12 of the metallic ring A is inserted in a central cavity of the lower surface of the boot -heel, to resist any lateral pressure on the circular plate A and by this means the plate and rubber ring 0 can be securely attached to the rubber face of the heel by a single screw, so that the appliances can be readily attached and removed. It will also be seen that the diameters of the metallic and rubber plates are less than the distance across the heel from front to rear, so that the plates may be adjusted when worn.
YVhat I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The adjustable circular metallic heel-plate A, provided with central orifice B, perforations a, and projecting wall 0, in combination with the india-rubber ring 0, having the studs 61 01, both rings being attached by a single central screw, which is passed through them into the heel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
BEN. F. EMERSON, WILLIAM L. ORDWAY.
